Has anyone figured out what or where this (on the youtube page) is from or what its significance is: https://yt3.ggpht.com/-Elqp3YAB3-o/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/w5vn7FNZSss/s100-c-k-no/photo.jpg? I started posting earlier today that it had a lake in it but then I checked myself and checked the YouTube site and found I was incorrect. But doesn't it look like a small cliff near a lake or river?

EDIT: or even an dry lake bed or a quarry...

That is a cliff near a lake from the area near the season 2 hotel. See Entry 27 for more.

Thanks much, man, I knew I'd seen water associated with it somewhere before!

That doesn't solve the question of whether or not there's a connection with the 44 logo or not (though now I'm more likely to think that it does, and that this thewaterisdeep gif is an underwater scene from there), but wasn't this a point of some consideration long ago, both during season 2 (which is before I knew what Unfiction was, frankly) and late in season 3, especially when TTA's "Null" came out? I might check through posts a bit later--the lake came up a few times, and I seem to recall some wondering about its relevance...

oh wow the emails....so about this new page, 44 brackets?

i know the gif title is "thewaterisdeep"

but hover over the gif and you get:

141223208655

corresponding letters could be N L Y T H F E E?

f this man i have a doctors appointment at 9 in the morning why all this at 2am whyyyyyyyyyy

I don't know--seems a bit arbitrary with the last three digits. I'm not saying it's not a valid attempt.

It looks almost like an international phone number, but that's only if it's written in the right order. The country code would place it in Slovakia. Then there's someone who posted the following to his tumblr: http://davidlikestofilm.tumblr.com/post/116352444533/im-getting-closer-i-hope.

I don't think it's right either, but it's another valid attempt.

The 44 followed by a dot and then a number doesn't look like coordinates to me--it looks like (I'm bad with computers and coding and shit, so I'm typing out to try to find the write word) it could be a file path directory or some media URL (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). As I said, I know what I want to say but cannot think of the right words.

The brackets are strange in that they're all pointing to the Left, which seems to indicate that they are NOT serving as parenthetic punctuation...

Not that any of this helps...

I got the letters wrong actually. The Y is a W
you can spell out "When left" or "left when"

Aw, geez, well, if people are getting delayed out-of-office messages that are disrupted in text as well, then you really may be onto something with "LEFT WHEN" or "WHEN LEFT."

I don't think its a question, i think its a part of a sentence.

Maybe "There are footsteps left when the water is deep"

could it be referencing jesus walking on water or something?

idk.

quick someone get some scuba gear and delve into the sea off the coast of africa to see what you can find.

I tried the coordinates in Google Maps and got a place in Russia.

Actually, I believe in Chechnya.

changing the last coordinate so that 44 comes at the end, which would place one in Serbia...

I don't know. It does seem like a big coincidence, but I believe this is a red herring. People tried for 5 years to find bible references in every mystery bit of MH, and - as far as I remember - not one came out with anything significant or useful.

I'm also very sceptic of the "location" that some people are searching for. I mean, come on. We know that this series will play in the USA. Yes, the date format in the mail is very un-american, but I don't see this could be a hint that Mr. Scott came from Europe, or the series will play in Europe, or whatever. If anything, I guess that this might be to solve some number related issues.

I dunno--I don't see it. Other instances of deep waters are Pharaoh and his army being drowned in Exodus after the Israelites make an escape while the Red Sea parts, Jonah fleeing to the ends of the earth to avoid delivering a message that God wants him to deliver to the most wicked of all empires because they'll then have a chance to repent, Jonah in the Whale and offering thanksgiving for being saved, Isaiah 44 (which talks about pouring waters on dry land https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah%2044&version=AKJV--using the KJV on the off chance there's actually a biblical theme to this one, though I highly doubt it--the phrase I've used about pouring waters is from the NRSV translation), and of course Christ walking on the water (and the living waters as well... and the flood... and... The... Ark).

I don't see a religious theme, but it doesn't hurt to try it, no. Even though there's no obvious religious theme, Troy et al. must have been thinking of Noah's Ark in choosing that term "The Ark." There's so much water imagery in Marble Hornets, and now we have it again with the new series in the logo (which recalls the lake in some entries), Benedict Hall was apparently destroyed by flooding, there's something of a perverse baptism in those who are Oppynapped finding themselves in water (Tim first finds himself in water in the chestcam footage from Entry #65).

I don't think it's religious at all, but that doesn't mean the THAC boys wouldn't mine some biblical quotes for artistic purpose and for the puzzle for to build up the suspense...

I'd also like to point out that the date format is not THAT un-American (goodness, I use international style in most of my non-electronic correspondence), especially not in a more cosmopolitan area such as a major university and research city (I live in Greater Boston).

EDIT: That said, it DOES look like an aborted draft or a cover up or something--it's so weird to have the placeholder for the date rather than the date.

I don't think it will have much to do with overseas things. The coordinates guess was a good one, though. But I don't think that number from the newly found gif looks like coordinates. I'm still thinking some sort of file directory. Look at how the brackets are all pointing the same way, as if they're suggesting that something comes before them. Maybe "44," but maybe something else?

Yeah, i remember how many times it seemed like religious reference but wasn't. I was part of the "wasn't" group too.

I just figured id post whatever came to mind anyway.

Regardless, i still think it being some kind of sentence could be a good lead.

Neither disagreeing with nor meaning to discourage you on that. I'm still holding onto my URL or file directory hypothesis even though I lack the coding knowledge to really test it.

For me they look like there is something still to come. Very Happy Because the second row does not consist of the "}" bracket, closing the former ones. So I'm now waiting for two rows of 44 "}" brackets. Whatever thewaterisdeep.gif and 141223208655 mean, they are in an open equation.

That's a good point. Of course, it could be that the mystery is what's been opened and that there's more to come...

Either way, glad I'm not the only one who thinks that might be significant.

I like the whole "there are foot steps left when the water is deep" idea. Though not sure what it kind mean yet.

Just an idea, the country code for the UK is 44 and with the date format in the email being DD/MM/YYYY maybe they're hinting that either D Scott is from the UK or that the new series is set there

Cracked
Think I solved the random number code on therearefootsteps

So, the page contains 44 brackets, a picture of moving water with the numbers 141223208655, and another 44 brackets.

What I did from here was look up coordinate finders, decoders, all that jazz. Eventually I noticed that the sets of 88 brackets were between the picture and numbers, so for lattitude and longitude, i put 44 at the beginning. Afterwards, i used the set of random numbers and got a lattitude and longitude of 44.141223; 44.208655. This led me to the body of water called the Gulf of Guinea outside of Africa.

Now this was an unlikely answer to me at first, but then i looked at the message again and saw that D scott had said "DD/MM/YYY", which isnt American format. Its a format used in locations such as South America, Australia and some parts of Africa.

It may imply that this .gif image on the site is in the Gulf of Guinea itself.
