Red, Can you post you 'censor' picture. Please? I think it might be a clue of sorts. One of them has an upside down questionmark. I was curious if yours was the same.

Mine has the question mark too. Those (from what I understand in a META convo confirming the receipt of package) were thrown in as a courtesy from the PM

Oh crap!!! Didn't realize I still had moderator privileges here & accidentally edited your question above rather than replying.

as to Lord Playfair - we've been getting quite a few subtle hints from Callum regarding "play fair" it's a good bet the strips or the longer cipher will be playfair ciphers

Re: Station

Nice thinking guys!

I wish I were more familiar with all of the different types of ciphers. I think live brainstorming is a good idea, but I don't know how useful I'd be (given I'm still new to this).

Also, we might want to be mindful of how much we share between Callum and Lucy. Specifically we might not want to talk to much about Lucy's puzzles in the group chat with Callum. Possibily vice versa but Lucy doesn't seem to care about Callum except that she doesn't want to be found by him.

I'm inclined to agree. It almost seems that this game is going in the direction that we'll be able to choose sides (or at least I hope so). If that turns out to be the case, I think I'm going with Lucy.

Unrelated, but if anyone wants to help come up with 3 questions for Lucy on /almustafa, I think she's still patiently waiting. Not sure how important it is anymore, though.

Perhaps the quotes are suggesting that the letters replaced by the stars make some sort of Caesar cipher?

Looks as if this may be at least partially correct, although I still can't make those "starred" letters shift into anything useful. I apologized to Lucy for possibly leading Collum to her email address, and she replied thus:

Lucy wrote:
Interesting, I did not think it would have been you - but you have admitted it - yes, you have made excuses. But you were doing part of a bigger plan... it seems...
Unless you're covering for someone else?
mmm... Callum, you are becoming more manipulative every day - you HAVE learnt...

Sorry, an aside thought and since I never actually touch a keyboard anymore since, well, since my DNA was sampled against my will from skin flakes there - I, now use voice and I cannot be bothered to reprogram or delete this missive.
So you are getting stream of consciousness thought instead - a ramble but tough. Lest you can put up with.
Until later Judas...

oh, for Herne's sake - not one of you seem to be able to look at whats in front of you do you? I mean, I put a simple shift along cipher in front of you and - oh this things on still - send.

(Herne, by the way, is almost certain to be Herne the Hunter.)

Simple shift along means at ROT cipher, so start shifting (up to 25 places) from the letters she gave. Rumkin (?) Has somr nice helper programs. I'm off to class, will put the stars through the roatation after I get home if no one else has

Rumkin does have some nice helper programs!

A Cesarian Shift/Rot/Simple Shift - it has lots of names. I have put the letters though all the shifts. I have even tried shifting the individual 'phrases' thinking they might be based on the verse. I even tried something silly like shifting in the message itself - grabbing the letter 1 or 2 over from the *. None of that bore fruit for me.

I have been mostly focusing on the mailed stuff. Lots of thoughts there.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think by giving us lord playfair, it's very clear it's a playfair cipher. Callum confirmed this in Skype to me. After he made a comment about playing fair:

ME: It is what Wheatstone* would want us to do...playfair
Him: Welcome to thinking... If only you had the keys... Oh wait...

*Wheatstone being the true creator of Playfair

Between the two options - the individual line ciphers and the communal larger cipher. I'm fairly certain it is the individual ones. Mostly because if you start to break the big (communal) one up into pairs - which is how playfair is decrypted/encrypted - you get "GG" together eventually (assuming I didn't mess up). This is impossible in Playfair.

Looking at the line ciphers, I had the crazy though the keys might be found in the 'chess/checkers" puzzles and this is as far as I got there. Some of this is duplicated from other posts (apologies for that)

* The dates are his birth/death date. umbrakalon makes no sense but his famed association could be the Royal Astronomical Society or it could be Baily's Beeds

recognising xrays yields fowler gleed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Fowler
* This one is the most complex, the dates are the birth date for him and he died on 24/06 but it was in 1940 not 1846. The part about xrays yields fowlere gleed, makes me think of this guy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Alfred_Fowler
* He did work with xrays and wrote a paper about the stars. Also he was obsessed with steam engines/locomotives and gleed is an alternate word for coal (sorta)

Random other note, all the guys I listed originally, were members of the Royal Astronomical Society. Most of them were Presidents. Bessel was not but he won an Gold Metal from them. (Several others also won said metal but i figured being a President was more important)

Taking all this into account, I have not managed to find a key from this. So it's possible I'm barking up the wrong tree.

I have also been looking at the front and back stuff. The front eludes me but I think the back is a spiral, although there is one envelope I have no idea what to do with.

So the green "spiral" makes a fancy question mark - nice!

The rot on the asterisk (star) letters produced nothing?? Even backwards? Hmmm....

I have also tried every Caesar shift far too many times than probably necessary with no success. Do you guys think it could be a keyed Caesar? I noticed that Lucy said "The key thing to do is think." which made me think of /scholar. But using "THINK" as a key didn't work either. Neither did "TRUTH" (the title of the image at the link is: truths key).

I've been focusing more on Lucy than Callum, but I think the Riddler's posts are meant to help with the code in the packages and might point us towards the key. I've asked Callum more about Vaihinger's "As If" theory and I'm waiting for his response.

4 is Beryllium and 25 is Manganese, but I think the existence of something called a Pierce-Smith converter is probably just a coincidence. Y'see...

Back in the 40s there was a musical group called the Sentimental Four. Two of the original members were Rudy and Bernie West. One of the others eventually left the group, and two new members joined: Maryland Pierce and Dickie Smith. The fifth member was Thomas Threat. The group then became know as the Five Keys. Two of their albums were "The Five Keys on Stage" and "The Five Keys on the Town"; since this is a music puzzle, I'm betting this is the connection we seek.

Haven't yet figured out what the 25 means, though...

Well Done Shadow!!! Hmm the 25....

3 compilations with 25 hits:

1) A Shot of Rhythm 'N' Blues: 25 Golden Greats - their song on it: The Glory of Love

2) 25 Golden Hits, Vol. 4 - song: My Pigeons Gone

3) 5 Golden Hits, Vol. 10 - song: Red Sails in the Sunset

also, no idea how many were in the orchestra but they performed with Howard Biggs Orchestra with whom they recorded "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" and "Wisdom of a Fool."

probably the wrong path...

We still have work to do from the beginning
Callum said so

so apparently we still have something in the word search & in the letter we have missed, which if we find it, will make things flow a little better (and easier)
Quote:
Callum Felderi :Good morning Carol - how are you this morning - or - for you - how are you this night?! Time differences, always enjoyable!

Carol Red Hatty: I'm well. Late for me

Callum Felderi: How late? As in Kristin joining in late or?

Carol Red Hatty: I dont know about Kristin

Callum Felderi: Ah, just playing with words - apologies, my brain works slowly in the morning...
How are you enjoying the wordsearch - oh wait, you finished with all that didn't you?
Didn't you???

Carol Red Hatty: Though we have made a little progress with the riddler's puzzle

Callum Felderi: His message to you all in the letter?

Carol Red Hatty: Yes the word search is done

Callum Felderi: And by message, I'm not talking plaintext or italics, but the third message there...
No. Tjhe wordsearch ISN'T done, or you';d be making more progress...
the*
What can I say ? I'm nicer sometimes than others...

Carol Red Hatty: The envelopes have only given us a big question mark so far

Callum Felderi: Though that is a rare thing.
Oh. Sorry to hear that - now who uses question marks?

Carol Red Hatty: The riddler

Callum Felderi: Right...

Carol Red Hatty: I'll have to let the others know we still have word search work to do

Callum Felderi: Ok - you do that..
Initially, you might want to look at the letter again...

Carol Red Hatty: Okay

Callum Felderi: don't you just ahte it when you miss something so obvious?!
hate*

Carol Red Hatty: Yes, yes I do

Callum Felderi: You know, something that stares you in the face from the beginning.
*looks for madcat to stroke again*

Carol Red Hatty: Hiding in plain sight

Callum Felderi: Best way to be...

Callum Felderi: So, Carol - you mentioned exams coming up - how are they going?

Carol Red Hatty: Microbiology, the lab & math - all A's so far. Spanish is a strong B I made Honor Society last semester, my induction ceremony is in May. I never managed that before, so I'm quite proud of myself
though the next micro exam is on immunology & it's a LOT of information

Callum Felderi: Initially, you must have been scared, but now, with everything you focused on, you can seem more accomplished?

Carol Red Hatty: this is my 3rd degree. It is easier this time around than ever before, whether that is a reflection on the education system here in the states, or the benefits of maturity I have yet to decide
tomorrow after class I will have 2 days to devote to my home & the game, hopefully some of my cipher skills will return quickly

Callum Felderi: Wow - a third degree - very impressive!
Just mentioned to someone else here at the agency and they're also impressed.

Carol Red Hatty: oh it's been quite a while between them
I'm at the point where my children are grown, so I can now be selfish a little & do something I always wanted to do. With a little luck & a lot of hard work, I'll get to go to the universities I want to go all the way to PhD this time

Callum Felderi: Keep focused- your initial desires can now rise!

Carol Red Hatty: I'm trying I am really enjoying myself, so it isn't difficult

Callum Felderi: To start with, your letters after your name are as they make them - initially, you can focus on that - or just be there from the beginning I suppose...

Carol Red Hatty: oh, it will happen as part of my research, I have no doubt

Callum Felderi: Do feel free to share this conversation as well...

Carol Red Hatty: I shall

Callum Felderi: Telling Patrick how I've been giving you clues and hints but you probably aren't seeing them... Yet...

Drawing from Arbad's work above, wanted to add

Koenigsberg Observatory was an astronomical research facility which was attached to the Albertina University of Königsberg. Many important astronomers such as Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander and Arthur Auwers worked there. In 1838, the parallax of a star was determined successfully for first time by Bessel using a heliometer.

The observatory was destroyed by Royal Air Force bombs in 1944 during the Second World War.

Aha! Those two bottom rows that never made any sense. If I'm counting correctly, there are 25 unused letters. Whaddya know?

Edit: Nope. Looks like 24. "Like hours they number..." 'Nother edit: I think it's KBFARXYFGULNDYUILCPHNAKM, if anyone would care to check my work.

Also, Mr. Nigma was helpfully snarky at me on Facebook regarding his latest puzzle. You know, the one with the word search in the background. D'oh.
I wrote:
If only I had five ciphers to go with The Five Keys...

Edward Nigma wrote:
Why five? Don't you have locks at home that use the same key? After all, seems pointless to make a sixth if you already have five.

So I'm guessing the bottom of the word search is a cipher, and, umm, we already have the key somewhere really obvious.

(Please, oh, please don't let it be an Enigma cipher...)

Re: Callum said so

Callum and I also have a separate chat, and he just redirected me back to the wordsearch too. Arbad69 and I have been chatting on fb about the solve for The Five Keys, but we couldn't make sense of the 25 either. Since The Riddler said something about being called "square," it made me think of how 25 and 4 are perfect squares. I thought it might be saying that there are five keys for the five playfair code strips, but if we really did miss a cipher, then that explains a lot. Now about the key....

I wrote:

Scratch that, Lucy has updated /almustafa with a prompt to ask questions. If no one else has any more suggestions, I'll just ask Redhatty's first suggestion to begin with and see where it takes us.

Oh, and Redhatty, his play on words was referencing the fact that I joined the game late Smile

ETA: I don't know what kind of cipher this is, but if the key is supposed to be super obvious, the first thing that jumps across is the word "ANSWER" highlighted. Though, in the letter, he also mentions "Variety is the key."

There is actually 25, your missing the starting U. I'll attach the screenshot of mine and singer's solution to the puzzle as I feel like that should not be a spoiler at this point. It's color coded and makes it really obvious.
