To be fair, the main reason so many people fell for it (which is, oddly enough, also the same reason I was suspicious) is because it did a good job of playing it safe.

Unlike bad gamejacks like Windmill, it didn't stray too far from anything we knew or expected, and didn't try to insert some drastically game-changing new element or character. This, combined with how little we have to work with right now (and thus, how little there was as far as evidence to the contrary) made it relatively convincing.

Do we know for sure this was actually a gamejack, and not just a thing they did because they thought it'd be cool/interesting? Have they made any claims that it really is part of the new series? Because I would think that Troy & company would have something stronger to say about it than "We didn't make this, but it's pretty cool" if someone was legitimately trying to hijack their project.

That was actually make sense. I though they would be mad or sue them for copyright. But no, they actually think it was cool and interesting. So it could be their creation.

My guess is that there's something we need to listen to (maybe the footsteps?)

But the only audio we so far is the audio in the teaser video in the THAC channel right?

I still feel that the "there are footsteps" thing could mean that we need some Code or Ciphers back from MH to solve this riddle. Footsteps can be traced back to their origin, and the origin or rather the past could in this case be the old MH series. We are told to listen, and we are told that there are footsteps. This means that "the hints are out there" if I understand the footstep metaphor right, and the listen part could mean that there is some audio out there that can help us to solve the riddle. Since the 44 material we have to work with is limited, the footstep audio could not only be in the teaser or that radio tune from...eastern Europe or whereever that was ... but also in the old MH videos or a TTA video.

And maybe, but just maybe, the thewaterisdeep.gif is a further hint to which TTA videos we should be looking into - the water related ones.
So, do we have a comprehensive list of all water-themed TTAs, of all unsolved codes, of all known ciphers to apply them to 141223208655, and of all suspicious audio snippets that might be relevant to 44?
Also, I'd like to dig into the sound issues myself, but lack any skill of that whatsoever. I even failed to recreate the "do I help or do I kill?" spectrogram-thingy for myself ... can anyone explain to me how to do that in audacity or some other open source software?

The code 141223208655 was solved at the earlier pages of this thread. It's decoded to "when left"

"Solved" means something different to me. First of all, we don't know if "when left" or "left when" is actually the intended message. Even if it were, I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. Some puzzled it into the disappearance of D Scott and that whoever is editing the site asked us when he left. But even if that were correct too, then it still does not explain why this is the title of the gif., what has this to do with deep water and footsteps?

Actually I'm pretty sure you're right. I refer to it as a "gamejack" more because regardless of its intentions, that is still what it most closely resembles, and because on UF apparently the definition for gamejack is quite broad.

Is it possible "when left" means we have to found out when Alex Kralie or dscott disappearence and use it for the next hidden site?

I, too, think that we missed something with the therearefootsteps page. I feel like the second email telling us to "listen" is like saying "hey you dumbasses you missed something go back to the site and figure out my message"

Receiver video and this person who creates it are the best thing I could ever ask for. He has make history to be the best TTA clone out there and even Joseph also got tricked! No wonder THAC cant hate this guy! He is amazing! Very HappyD This start to make me wonder if he would make J.Battista as their next group. You cant waste such talent like that.
