Oh there are still plenty of games going on that various people like to call ARGs. But they're very different beasts (pun intended?) than in the classic sense.
I don't think we'll ever truly get an experience that mimicks the style of those from the early/mid 2000's. Mainly because social networking and technology have dramatically changed over the years, as have legal rights, risks, and etiquette. But that hasn't stopped companies and organizations from continuing to create interactive experiences and other means of creative storytelling that spans multiple platforms; large scale and small scale, even having characters interact with players (one of the hardest things to do properly, imo)...
But great experiences are still definitely being crafted!

I definitely agree that grassroot ARGs are and have always been (IMO) the best ones. But you need skilled PuppetMasters behind them and soooo many of those people have moved on to bigger and better things - for them. Just not bigger and better for us. If that makes sense.
