So from now on, keep all this in mind for future PMs... make sure that anyone in the future who does an ARG knows what the players will expect if there are events or free swag... make sure the PMs know how players will feel if they feel they don't get reimbursed for their efforts in the game...

...
but I certainly didn't feel they "owed" us that, or a custom-made DVD, or even a preview of Halo 2 for that matter.

This is not meant as a comment on people's reactions ... but rather a comment on your belief -- with which I respectfully disagree -- that the players have the right to "expect" some sort of material, tangible reward beyond the joy of participating in something so brilliantly crafted.

sorry, was I not clear enough in my post? Smile Or are you disagreeing with someone else's belief? I totally believe exactly everything you said...
unless you're saying that no one should EVER expect anything ARGs... that, I can disagree with, because every arg is different, and the 'rules' are set for each of them differently... for this one, yeah, as I said, at no point was anyone promised anything, so player shouldn't have had any expectation of receiving anything as a reward.

So I'm just going to assume you quoted me when speaking to someone else, so I missed something and you're disagreeing with someone else's opinion... cuz our opinions are the same Wink

Nope. The in-game events stayed 100% in-game. (Or so I'm told, since I missed 'em all. Sad ) To the best of my knowledge, there was no sort of tangible reward at all for participating in the Beast. * See previous comment re: "joy of participating in something so brilliantly crafted." Mr. Green

That's not really true, I certainly went to a preview screening of A.I. for free as a result of the game - it was the European premiere in Amsterdam, in fact. I recall that other players were rewarded with preview screenings at other locations across the US.

Upon further reflection, I have heard rumors about some sort of A.I. poster containing the e-mail addresses of those who communicated with the PMs. Anyone care to verify?

Yes, they gave out the posters at the preview screenings. They were extremely nicely made and I think they have several hundred if not over a thousand of the email addresses of the players. You can see them here: http://photo.vavatch.co.uk/ai/index3.htm

We didn't get any DVDs though Very Happy

Umm...yeah. That's it. Exactly. That's what it was. Embarassed

(And totally wrong about A.I., too. Some days it just doesn't pay to hit 'Submit')

As we got into in The Other Thread (tm), what determines an "In-game Event"?

With ILB, the thing had a dual focus, and it led to problems. Devoted ILB fans expected an In-Game Event, casual Halo fans expected a Halo 2 Multiplayer Preview Thing. Judging by reports, it seems that both sides were irritated by what they experienced, based on what they expected.

I only know The Beast, but did they do anything similar? An "in-game event" that was also a place to see the first X minutes of AI?

I agree completely. The issue with the training event was that it was dual-purposed: an in-game ILB event and a chance for fans to play Halo 2 early. Thus it diluted both purposes. And as you said, it comes to expectations. If you are expecting something specific and that turns out not to be the case, then you are let down, not because PMs didn't deliver what they promised (because they didn't promise anything) but because they didn't deliver what someone thought up in their head.

If anything, the only thing the PMs are guilty of is being vague, so that we had the liberty to imagine what was going to happen there.

And being vague isn't necessarily a bad thing because it builds suspense and excitement.

With the Beast, we got to see the movie AI early, and there were people in the theater who were not players of the ARG. However, everybody got the same thing: to see the movie early. So nobody got shafted, nobody was privileged over anyone else who attended the event. They gave out special posters at the theaters, I believe, but I don't really remember there being an uproar that some people couldn't get posters.

There was another in-game "rally" event for The Beast that occurred in three cities. Aside from people not being able to go to one of the cities, there weren't any gripes. (in fact, an error by someone running one of the rallies inadvertently created an entirely new puzzle that was solved by a distributed software client running on hundreds of players' machines written by a player). The events occurring at the rally wouldn't have interested the public at large, so there was no cross-purpose of the event.

So I guess the solution to this one would be that if you're going to have an in-game event, make it appeal only to that group of people who play the ARG, and have a separate event for those that would be interested in the product the ARG is incorporated into. Or else ensure that everyone who attends is going to have the same experience.

P.S. If anyone didn't get a poster from The Beast and REALLY REALLY wants one/shed tears because they didn't get one, I think I have an extra one lying around somewhere.
