Will whoever ends up solving Edward Nigma's cipher please post how you did it here? The clue he posted doesn't make sense to me, which means I wasn't far enough along, I guess. Sigh...

Going on E.Nigma's page, in the comments of that puzzle on Oct 24 (I assume it's still the latest one) E. Nigma puts a series of the numbers in the comments.

The numbers I'm speaking about here are:
Quote:
14632064 15431065 15232440 14631466 15631461 15032440 14230060 14630064 15430440 14232062

This set of numbers is both Octal...and Binary.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Putting the above numbers into the tool that booba mentioned previously - i.e. Octal - comes out with a short series of code.

34462555 33673145 10030461 142.

E. Nigma - Callum, I guess? Makes a big deal out of the numbers 1 and 9, which together adds to form 10. The numbers as mentioned above are either odds or evens, so on a hunch I made the odds in the octal-decoded series '1' and the evens '0' then stuck that result into the binary decoder. (I have weird leaps of logic sometimes).

The final result:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
remove 111

Take that as whatever you will.

I got that part, using booba's translator site, but it still doesn't make sense as a clue to the actual cipher. All I've gotten there are words that may or may not go together, may or may not be part of a poem or something. I probably need more sleep...

Do you mind posting up the words that you've gotten? Just all as one big chunk. I'll sort through it. Right now I've had no progress at all.

Re: Callum Felderi
Nigma's cipher

I haven't solved "ALL" of it -- and don't expect to at this rate -- but I've gotten far enough to offer some oblique hints to those who are interested.

1) I translated the cipher the long way. There is a much much much easier method which I realized after I was done. All I'll say for now is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It involves the number 17. OOH WHAT A GIVEAWAY

2) Although I have extracted Mr. Nigma's actual message from the ciphertext, I have no idea what to do with it.

3) After translating the cipher and figuring out the next step, I know enough to verify that the double-octal decoding ("remove 111") is very likely correct. That is, I recognize the number 111 and am pretty sure I know what it refers to specifically. I don't know, however, what needs to be removed from what. Please disregard. I know exactly what "remove 111" means, and I already did it back in step 2. Dunce

I, unfortunately, don't know what "remove 111" is supposed to mean, since there isn't a "1" in it. I'm being stupid, I guess.

This may or may not help someone else solve the cipher, but I'll put it out there anyway: I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Celtic tree lore. Nine sacred trees. Lucy mentioned sacred groves way at the beginning. Just a thought...

Don't really care about the physical prize
And thanks to Shad0.

So here's the solution so far:

Using an online tool to work out the type of cipher...I mostly just bruteforced it. The online tool I used was Rumkin. When I say I brute-forced it I tried every possible cipher. Luckily, this one was near the top...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I used Affine cipher, coupled with Shad0's tip about 17.

The message from E.Nigma's page goes to:

COMETOGETH
ERIOUTOFPLACESHEHIDE
SINITIALLYNCOM
OFLETTERSFOUNDORWORDSFOUN
DHEREMUNITYTHISHIDDENMESS
GEWILLPERPLEXORIGINALLYFORGO
DSDWOODFO
RTHETREESSOMEMINDSWILLFEAREE

HISFAMERNTHEMFULDESIREYOUFO
RTHINKINGCLEARERLYGRACEFULA
NTOUNRAVELTHISFANTASTICTRUENAMEDMAJESTICHONORA
GOTHYWAYENJOYTHEDAYBLEANDWONDERFUL
.

Which, when parsed, (intermediate solve below) leads to this set of statements + the remaining letters. (+ Punctuation)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
COME TOGETHER OUT OF PLACES HE HIDES INITIALLY
OF LETTERS FOUND OR WORDS FOUND HERE.
THIS HIDDEN MESS(A)GE WILL
PERPLEX ORIGINALLY FOR GODS WOOD.
FOR THE TREES SOME MINDS WILL FEAR
ARE GREAT. DO NOT WORRY, GENTLE READER.
NOT KNOWN TO MANY IS THIS FAME.
THE(Y) DESIRE YOU FOR THINKING CLEARER
GRACEFUL AN(D)
UNRAVEL THIS FANTASTIC TRUE NAME.
MAJESTIC HONOR
GO THY WAY ENJOY THE DAY AND WONDERFUL

(IN COMMUNITY A DEEDS EVERYONE SHOULD LEARN 'MFULLY'ABLE D
The brackets denote a missing letter.

For this method of solution, I don't use the previous double-Octal hint. Shad0 says that he'd already included it in the number he used for the cipher, and he solved it the long way, which means I'm likely missing letters.

I don't really care about the prize, I'm more about the puzzle, so I'll relinquish the prize to whoever wants it, if I solve it first. That said, could someone give me the letters in the cipher I'm missing?

My current attempt looks much like kieto's, except that I didn't have a missing "a" in "message". Here's what I have so far:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
COME TOGETHER OUT OF PLACE SHE HIDES INITIALLY (NCOM) OF LETTERS FOUND OR WORDS FOUND HERE (M) (UNITY) THIS HIDDEN MESSAGE WILL PERPLEX ORIGINALLY FOR GODS (D) WOOD FOR THE TREES SOME MINDS WILL FEAR (EEDS) ARE GREAT (EV) DO NOT WORRY GENTLE READER (ERY) ONE SHOULD (LEA) NOT KNOWN TO MANY IS FAME (RN) THEM (FUL) DESIRE YOU FOR THINKING CLEARER (LY) GRACEFUL (AN) TO UNRAVEL THIS FANTASTIC TRUE NAME(D) MAJESTIC ON OR (A) GO THY WAY ENJOY THE DAY (BLE) AND WONDERFUL

The parentheses are my way of indicating extra letters, or words that might be incomplete. Putting those letters and words together adds:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
COMMUNITY DEEDS EVERY LEARN FULLY AND ABLE with an extra "N" that I don't know what to do with, unless I add it to the nearest "OR" to make "NOR"

Now I'm trying to put it in a rhyme that makes sense. Still haven't found a "111" to remove.

A note on what the message might re-arrange to:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It could be PLACES HE HIDES INITIALLY or PLACE SHE HIDES INITIALLY.

The hidden message from Pictishwitch, if the N is switched to 'OR' to make 'NOR', then becomes COMMUNITY DEEDS LEARN FULLY AND DO ABLE

Related to the Byron clue a while back, I Googled 'Byron God's Wood', and this poem came up.

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

Note that this poem, on the site I found it, is #88 out of 500...

That said, in the comment on E. Nigma's facebook post,
'Treachery may linger throughout though'

I suspect this might be a red herring.

This comment has popped up on E. Nigma's facebook post from E.Nigma:

Quote:
'twanging of a harp'
Fades from the forest song
Who will solve this riddle
The name of one along

Aside:
Count the letters, make the rhymes
Circle the total which has factor times
Together a final verse is found
Which, when unravelled, will present around...

I agree this may not be a one person solve, but if enough of us rearrange letters, words and phrases we might make something out of this.
So of the 359 letters we drop 111??? 248 factors to 1, 2, 31, 62, 124, 248

Solve with my spacing:
COME TOGETHER I OUT OF PLACE SHE HIDES INITIALLY NCOM OF LETTERS FOUND OR WORDS FOUND HERE MUNITY THIS HIDDEN MESSAGE WILL PERPLEX ORIGINALLY FOR GODS D WOOD FOR THE TREES SOME MINDS WILL FEAR EEDS ARE GREAT EV DO NOT WORRY GENTLE READER ERYONE SHOULD EA NOT KNOWN TO MANY IS THIS FAME RN THE MFUL DESIRE YOU FOR THINKING CLEAR ERLY GRACEFUL AN TO UNRAVEL THIS FANTASTIC TRUE NAMED MAJESTIC HONOR A GO THY WAY ENJOY THE DAY BLE AND WONDERFUL

My stab at rearranging the out of place letters:

COME TOGETHER I OUT OF PLACE. SHE HIDES INITIALLY. OF LETTERS FOUND OR WORDS FOUND HERE. COMMUNITY. THIS HIDDEN MESSAGE WILL PERPLEX ORIGINALLY. FOR GODS WOOD FOR THE TREES, SOME MINDS WILL FEAR. NEEDS ARE GREAT. DO NOT WORRY GENTLE READER. EVERYONE SHOULD NOT. KNOWN TO MANY IS THIS FAME. THE MEANFUL DESIRE YOU FOR THINKING CLEARLY, GRACEFUL, AND TO UNRAVEL THIS FANTASTIC, TRUE NAMED MAJESTIC HONOR. GO THY WAY, ENJOY THE DAY, ABLE AND WONDERFUL

Since booba didn't put the message under spoiler, I'll just go ahead with speculation that is not under spoiler either.

Googling 'God's Wood' alone brings up Game of Thrones, but Googling 'Holy Wood' brings up Marilyn Manson and his album "The Shadow in the Valley of Death" - which both fits the darkness theme and Lucy's previous common music recommendations.

Holy Wood was also an unpublished fantasy novel, which would fit the next few lines of that phrase. I can get the cipher to rhyme, but the rearrangement goes a bit funny in that case. Unravelling is brought up twice - once in that comment on E.Nigma's facebook page, and once in the deciphered message. It's probably important.

I just checked again, and there are 360 letters. 360-111 is 249. The factors of 249 are 1, 3, 83, and 249.

Still not sure how it all fits, but I'll sleep on it.

If you divide the words up like this

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
dividing where the letter(s) that aren't full words are

come together i
out of place she hides initially
n com
of letter found or words found here
munity
this hidden message will perplex originally
for gods d
wood for the trees some minds will fear
eeds are great ev
do not worry gentle reader
eryone should lea
not known to many is this fame
rn them ful
desire you for thinking clearer
ly graceful an
to unravel this fantastic true name
d majestic honora
go thy way enjoy the day
ble and wonderful

you then get
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
lines 3-8 of Psalm 111 found here http://scarletletterbible.com/song-111-a-22-line-acrostic-poem/ when you read every second line together starting with the first line. But maybe the other lines in between are actually what is important since they seem to makes some sort of sense, so perhaps that is the part that still needs to be unraveled.

Thank you, Pia! Removing that 111 leaves us with:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

OUT OF PLACES HE HIDES INITIALLY
OF LETTERS FOUND OR WORDS FOUND HERE
THIS HIDDEN MESSAGE WILL PERPLEX ORIGINALLY
WOOD FOR THE TREES SOME MINDS WILL FEAR
DO NOT WORRY GENTLE READER
NOT KNOWN TO MANY IS THIS FAME
DESIRE YOU FOR THINKING CLEARER
TO UNRAVEL THIS FANTASTIC TRUE NAME
GO THY WAY ENJOY THE DAY

There must be more, though.

Edited to add: I think I may be onto something:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The first word of each lines spells out "Out of this wood, do not desire to go," which is spoken by Titania in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Is that name, of that fairy, the answer to the deciphered message, then? The verse which that message appears in, matches up semantically with the deciphered message.

I'll give it a shot with E. Nigma, and let you know...

Edit: As a quick note, the scene that the message is taken from is Scene 1, Page 7...

It does say from E. Nigma's previous message, that the name is from 'one along'. Don't know how that applies, if it does at all.

Note that the name of that fairy is also a moon, as it fits the original image. Don't know how the nine-pointed star comes into play, though.
