EMail Phiesty Phyllis Phreaks: Strange Happings

Well things are heating up over at Phyllis' house!
I think the Keys are the key! lelelel Shocked Shocked Shocked

Dear Sunny,
Ever since I started thinking about that red disc and wondering about where in the world Wes Keeler could be, the strangest things have been happening. The ery night I last emailed you I had an horrific nightmare that awoke me with a gasp but, I cannot remember what it was about. I was sitting up in bed, taking deep breaths and concentrating on getting my heart beat back to normal when I noticed a crack of light under my bedroom door. I thought, well, I've been so distracted lately I guess I left on the hall light. So, I got up, turned it off and got back in bed. I was tossing and turning then dozed in a light sleep for a while. There was a thump, nothing very loud. Believe me Douglas was snoring through all of this. But, my eyes sprang open at the noise and the hall light was on again! Barely able to breath, I whispered to Douglas, Wake up, there's someone in the house! I had to poke him in the ribs a couple of times to get him to respond. And just as he sits up and I tell him, The hall light's on – it goes off! He got up and went through the house and came back to tell me all was well. He convinced me that I had only been dreaming. I tell you, Sunny I WAS NOT DREAMING!

Then, yesterday morning, I could not find my house keys. I always, always hang them on a hook on the wall in the kitchen and they simply were not there. I told Douglas, See, someone got my keys and came into the house last night, I told you so. Ever since the burglary Douglas has been more anxious about our security. Not nearly as upset as I've been but, he took the missing keys with every bit as much alarm as I did. He was getting ready to call the police and I told him, no, let me get dressed first. Well, there were the keys on top of my dresser in our bedroom!

This is quite simply impossible! Impossible! Believe me when I tell you that I am an extremely orderly person. I believe in a place for everything and everything in its place. I have routines, habits, daily rituals that I follow exactly. There is absolutely no way I would have put those keys on my dresser.
No way! And the alternative -- the very idea that someone could have crept into our bedroom while I was fitfully dozing and put them on the dresser -- no, it
could not have happened. I jumped at a soft little thump; I surely would have heard someone in the room! Douglas just rolled his eyes and muttered something about Klepsydra. I was not amused. I know I've been on edge, probably suffering Post-Traumatic Stress, but this is more than feeling anxious and paranoid. I know I've admitted to you that I feel like I'm losing my mind but I have never lost my orderliness, ever.

Well, Douglas went off to work and I went into the shop to get ready to open. I was just about to unlock the front door when I heard another thump coming from the back wall. Just a soft, little thump but I nearly jumped out of my skin. And, the room was suddenly as cold as a freezer. Outside I saw one of the Doyle's going by, so I opened the door and invited him in. The first thing he said was, Why do you have it so cold in here, Mrs. Willingham? He went with me to check the thermostat which was set on 72. The rest of the house was perfectly pleasant; only the shop was frigid! I made him go with me through the house, too. By the time we came back to the shop, it was warm again. I am sure this will be the cause of more hilarity for the locals.

Sunny, I did not sleep a wink last night. The hall light went on and off, on
and off, all night but I knew, just knew, that if I woke Douglas it would go
off and make me look like a lunatic. I made him watch me hang my keys on their hook last night and sure enough they were there this morning. He left for work and when I went to get the keys to open the shop they were gone again! I almost got hysterical but instead I got angry. I clenched my jaw and stomped up the stairs to our bedroom. They were not, however, on my dresser. I just exploded
with fury and yelled, How dare you! Whatever you are! Do not play games with
me! At that, there was a loud crash downstairs. I rushed down to find a
beautiful antique mirror smashed on the floor. Now, understand this: The hook
on the wall was just as it should be; it wasn't broken or bent; the mirror was NOT directly below where it had hung on the wall! It was about four feet from the wall like something had lifted it off the hook and sent it sailing into the
air! And right there – in the midst of the shattered glass fragments – were my keys!
Now, I can begrudgingly accept the idea that I might have taken to misplacing my keys. I can even consider the idea that I am simply imagining the hall light going on and off all night. But, I assure you, I have NOT developed an alter-ego that hurls down valuable antique mirrors in order to frighten my primary self later! There seems to be a connection, I think, between my angry outburst and the mirror being smashed. I remembered what you said about the dead eyes feeding on belief and I'm thinking, maybe, whatever this is feeds on fear and anger. So, I went to the doctor today and got some tranquilizers and sleeping pills. I am so calm now I'm feeling positively transcendent. I am going to sleep with my back toward the hall and be oblivious to whether the hall light is on or off. AND, I am going to sleep with my keys clenched in my fist!
Now, what do you think about all that, dear friend?

Phyllis
