I think that we sometimes forget the beauty and amazement between the notes. What we feel between the notes is the experience that those notes brought to us.

So many people feel the need to fill every waking hour with some sort of plan. They can't sit and watch paint dry because they feel it is a waste of time. Life is what happens is those spaces, it's what ultimately shapes us to who we are.

I lost my train of thought(damnit).

In parting I'm reminded of a quote: "Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans."--John Lennon

Etruscan Pottery would be so much more fun if it wasn't so often busted up into so many little pieces... and very old

Ok first off, I feel very uneducated compared to all of you, as I dropped out of college after 1 1/2 years.

But I came to find out that in the business world, it is more about who you know, than what you know.

After I dropped out of college, and was tired for working for JC Penney, I decided that I wanted an IT job, since I loved working with computers, and my father is one of HP's lead techs in Dallas. But with no formal training, and no degree, it wasn't the easiest thing in the world. As luck would have it though, one of my friends had to turn down an IT job in Dallas, and recomended me. Strangly enough I actually got the job, and let me tell you how much of a suprise that was, since I didn't even know what Cable Select meant.

Anyway, that job was pure hell, as the other 2 people in the IT department looked down on me, and I came to find out that the only reason I was hired was because they were afraid to lose their jobs, and hired the least likely person that would be able to replace them. But while I was there I learned everything I could. I was eventaully let go, which sucked, especailly since the ability to find work in dallas as an IT tech with no degree, and less than a year of on the job work was just about impossible.

But then the same friend called me up from Houston where he had moved, and told me the company he worked for was hiring, and that if I wanted him to, he could get me an interview. And that is how I wound up here, I work for a small family owned business. We support a small client base, and there are only 4 tech guys here. I work on site for one of their clients, where I support 13 users and 6 servers, which is just about nothing. They don't bother me, and I can do whatever I want as long as I fix the problems here, and the people here are incredible.

I literally went from not knowing how to network a drive, to building servers within a year.

I guess my extremly long winded point is that everyone is different? Some people enjoy school alot, but have to take jobs they don't really like, just to get by. Some people can't stand school, and find jobs that they would have never dreamed of. Then there are all those people in between, such is life.

PS.

BTW, just a quick note about myself and ILB, I actually found ilovebees.com about 1 1/2 months ago, and followed it on the website, but had no idea what was going on.

It wasn't till earlier this week that I found this site, unfortunatly too late to participate at all. But I have to say that listening to all of your experiences with this game has been incredible. Although I didn't actually get to play, living the experience vicariously through you guys has been one of the most enjoyable times I have been blessed to have.

I hope that I will be able to participate in another ARG sometime in the future, and the people that participate in it will be as cool as you guys have been.

Sounds like you are quite the catch.... Hey Phaedra, I know we haven't really met and all but.... Will you marry me? Wink

Seriously, about the blogs. Life hasn't been going the greatist for me so one day for some odd reason I started a blog. I don't think anyone reads it, but just the thought of somone out there possibly reading everything personal that I put in there is somewhat therapeutic. I'd really recommend it, especially if putting your feelings into words is a gift you have and you enjoy doing it. I have mine at www.blogger.com. I can post a link up to it if anyone is interested.

And nachos. You pretty much need a steady stream of nachos.

And No-Doz.

Why? College isn't for everybody, and in some cases, it's way overrated. I hardly use anything I studied for my major if I haven't forgotten it completely. More importantly, you can't assume that a college education necessarily produces a better person/thinker/citizen of the world. I know plenty of people with college educations that still don't know how to think or have a lick of common sense or shred of decency.

That's true in a lot of industries. Let me add one, which you already know: it's also about persistence. Look what you did, and where you ended up. You didn't let not having a degree hold you back. Always looking for a way to get the next step, no matter what, is something not everyone has.

Yes. If Kristen Rutherford can down two fistfuls of pixy stix before becoming the Sleeping Princess, then I think any combination of tasty snack + caffeine + sugar will work. Wink

(that's my story, Durga, and I'm stickin' to it! Wink )

Elec, Can I asked where you applied? I'm a software engineer at lockheed and if you have a securtiy clearance you are like gold. If you applied for a secret security clearance, it cost whoever filled it, a few thousand dollars. So if the company that you applied for put in your applicaion for a clearance, I'd say you have a pretty good chance (I cant think of anyone who likes to give away thousands of dollars). Just so you know, when they investigate, they do a credit check and then a police background check to start with. If those check out ok, they will issue an interem Clearance. That would be enough to get your foot in the door anywhere. Once you have a clearance and a CS degree, you are very marketable, and wont have a hard time finding a job in DOD.

It's uh...well let's say it's probably one of the most extensive clearance processes you could have. No interim clearance issued. No clearance, no start worky. Mainly due to the can't get into the facility without a clearance thing.

Or that not having a secondary education means someone is lesse versed or skilled in any trade or art... I got a job right out of high school (actually, during my last year) and I've been in that business since, with no university or college degree... and it's a place where having a degree is osmething people look for. I just loved what I do, and did it so much that my skill was better than some of the people they interviewed with degrees... my work is now officially having me train so I can have the technicality of the MCAD certification beside my name... so they can advertise that the department has official MCAD certification, instead of just mad skill Razz hehe

My philosophy - for advanced jobs - a degree gets you the interview, natural talent and dedication gets you the job... it's not very common that a company will hire someone with both...

larger corporations, with say 100 applicants for a position, will very likely remove anyone without a degree - thus if you want a corporate level career, you have a better chance if you've got a degree of some kind. But many places, smarter places, usually smaller, know that a person with a degree won't necessarily be the most productive or best worker, and really try to dig and find out if the person they're hiring will be worth it, even without a degree. Thus how I got my job...

So depending on what you want to do, keep that in mind.
Degree=interview, Skill=job... Both=you can't go wrong

Elec. If the clearance is higer than secret. maybe TS or TS/SCI. I dont want to know, but the point is, if the company is paying for the investigation, chances are you have the job. Clearances can take a long time. DSS is very slow with the investigations. They like to take their time. If there is anyway to make sure you get it. Stick around to wait for it. It will help you in the long run, even if you dont get this job.

For those who want it:
My Blog
Its pretty personal and nothing special and I'm not a great writer, but it helps with every day live nonetheless.

edit: had some info about clearances, i dont think should have been in there. I could tell ya but I'd have to kill ya. j/k. It wasnt that bad, but better to be safe.

Hrm, You quote MY text and say "you are quite the catch".

Well, you know, I don't usually swing that way... But I AM very flattered, and I might let you take me to dinner with no guarantees of anything more than a goodnight kiss... Although, you shouldn't hit on me and ask Phaedra to marry you in the same paragraph.

Speaking from a bit of experience, here... Those kinds of clearances (I'm guessing that it is at very least a TS/SCI (Which, by the by, is the highest level clearance you are permitted to mention publicly)) can take QUITE a long time to obtain. When I got mine a basic TS was running about 18 months, then add another 6 months for the SCI once the TS was awarded.

It can't hurt to keep looking, right? If you might be waiting a long time for a clearance, you might be able to find another job to work until your ship comes in. Waiting for a dream job is a laudable thing, but it can't hurt to have some income in the mean time. You may get a crap job, but you are building experience, learning, and more important, you have an income.
