Shocked

I opened the wav file up in Audacity and it looked nothing like that for me -- or rather, I got the spectrogram form there at the top, but apparently they used some program to convert it to the letters at the bottom: http://photosounder.com/

Interesting findings here and there, but we have to be aware of various ARGs, which could be run by BR. I mean, Trachtenberg films Valve's classic Portal, but 10CfLn as well.

Hope, there won't be interARGial confusion.
But the whole scene looks interesting.

I've downloaded the Twitter picture and opened it up in TextEdit and I can search through and find the string "G5MC" in there, so it's not like they made that up. But I don't know how you would have known, amidst all the other binary gobbledygook, that this was the crucial thing to look for.

I can't replicate this, I'm using two different editors on Linux but none of them show the strings. I tried both pictures I linked, the first one is the same uploaded at the twitter link and the second is the original upload. I also made sure to check if there were special characters or spaces between a capital G and the rest of the characters, nothing.

That's interesting.. I can search and find the string "G5MC" in CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg-large.jpeg but not in CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg

To download the former, I had to click on the image within Twitter to make it 'big' and then save to desktop.

EDIT: I agree that Twitter seems like a precarious way to transmit this, given the way it deals with images.

See what I mean? There are three different versions of the same poster. I'm going to try with the :large version...

And there it is, in the line 1174 of the file.
Code:
w–8c†˜G5MC#…GA~@nmeVC›)1 ˜‹–J GMrD,Ct zvœ)Ep,U{;sꦿV‡
Gw eT{M)p\;Œ5٦qp.\y]`&9Ž)u?x5g

Nš8h1Wm=+Ÿ

I think this is a heavy case of grasping for straws, try downloading each version: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg, https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg:large and https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg:orig, and I bet you will only find it in the second, because it was changed by Twitter and not put there intentionally.

So this may sound insane but... Ok... I've been tracking some weirdness for a month now. First there was the steam sale ARG (and there was absolutely an ARG) that went nowhere. Eventually I started watching the Halflife Forum on a hunch. There's a potential Valve leaker on the Halife Reddit forum. He buried a link to Bad Robot's Twitter in a smiley face in a post, alleging that things (including HL3) were coming soon. This was about a week before the trailer dropped.

Through this link - and having noticed over Christmas (from Star Wars) that JJ's slate of projects is relatively open right now, which is odd - I found Valencia. And that something really weird was going on with it. It shot a year ago and was nowhere to be found. I convinced my self due to Dan "Portal" Trachtenberg it was some sort of Valve movie - Mary Elizabeth Winstead would make a perfect Chell. Or maybe L4D - they were always trying to get to New Orleans. Maybe all of the above. And Valve has often invited people who make fan projects to work with them. It's not at all beyond the realm of possibility since JJ & Valve are absolutely working together on... Something.

Then a couple of days later the trailer dropped and it turned out to be Cloverfield. I was right about it being a big secret, wrong about the secret. Oh well. You win some.

... Or *was* I wrong? Ever notice how much the Cloverfield monster looks like a Combine monster? A strider maybe? And the Parasites look like Antlions?

And when I think about it - what IS 42 media up to right now? They've been Radio silent for 3 years? And they're about the only people that could handle something this HUGE. Maybe they were up to something BIG.

If what I think is happening is happening all this started planning 2012/2013. Maybe 4.8.13. Even.

It's a Valencia Orange Mystery box.

The reddit user did say they used "strings.exe" this is a command line ascii/binary extractor that you can download here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/strings.aspx anyways I tried it using the 'large' jpg you suggested and the -a switch and the first line is indeed G5MC. Now how this leap of intution came about... <shrugs>

Okay, trying it specifically with strings.exe, each version of the poster. Here's the output on each:
CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg = http://pastebin.com/WVJ37ATs
CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg:large = http://pastebin.com/9J5DYB3x
CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg:orig = http://pastebin.com/Ug4wwB8V

Again, G5MC only appears later on the file for me, and only in the second file.

So what are the implications of this? Does that make it more or less likely to be legit?

The ham radio account was created on 15 January, the same day as that tweet (I can't tell which was first).

Cynical possibility: Someone saw the tweet, looked at the binary of the large poster image, plucked out some random strings, and immediately created a brief trail just for kicks. And has been waiting impatiently for 10 days for this to be found.

I don't see anything else in those strings files that would lead anyone to anything.

Way less likely. If the results can't be replicated equally using similar methods, then it cannot be a reliable trail. And besides, opening the poster pic from Twitter and not the original site is a huge stretch, for the reasons mentioned above. If they wanted to add some text data into the file, they wouldn't have put a 4-letter string among many, with no other clue whatsoever.

I agree that it is an extreme quawinkidink if this turns out to be IG (if a game exists) but that being said, I still get the same results as the reddit user (don't know why you haven't).

Screen shots of the command line I used and the results:

So what you are saying is.... HALF-LIFE 3 CONFIRMED!!! And JG is either an aging fat sad sack Gordon Freeman? Wink

that's probably because anyone worth a damn parted with the company ages ago!

I totally agree. This line of attack is garbage.

If they wanted a trail embedded in an image,
  • it would be on the official website,
  • it would be a string with some obvious meaning on its own,
  • it would be flagged with a clue or pointer to look deeper,
  • it would be a string long enough not to randomly appear in the binary of just about any kind of image file,
etc.

In past games, I've seen entire sentences embedded in an image file, always as plain text easily found by opening the file with Notepad or a hex editor. Sometimes the doctored image was paired with the original file, so comparisons could be made. I understand the desire to be more clever than all possible puzzle setters, but this is madness.

Because both of you are using Windows, and I'm not. That alone might cause some of the metadata to be shown differently, even though I'm using the same application.
My commandline consists of
Quote:
wine ~/Downloads/strings/strings.exe ~/Downloads/CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8.jpg-large.jpg > ~/Downloads/CYw0iUsU0AAgVJ8-large.txt

Without the -a, because when I do that, it simply doesn't accept the parameter and returns an error. The > sends the output to a text file.

Apparently the same user posted this potential lead 10 days ago and then deleted it. Not sure what that says about its legitimacy, but for some reason it makes me feel skeptical...
