EDIT: LOL. SO. I just went to check Goodman's Wikipedia and it lists a Character name for Cloverfield all of a sudden!!!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Phil Glover.

This is an entirely different name than in the spec script.

Lol, thats funny, but thats 99% non official, i.e. fan made joke.
If we check the wiki page history, the first entry about 10CfLn in Goodmans filmography is made on 15.January2016 (day as the trailer hit the screens). This is still OK, a movie role without character name.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Goodman&oldid=699911888
Made by Wiki-User NathanielTheBold. He is active since 2010 and registered with his username.

The first entry of the character name is made the same day:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Goodman&oldid=699929935
by the nameless user from the IP 187.159.62.191.
And if we check it, it's from Mexico. So I doubt, somebody from Paramount Pictures (who would knew the script) would post to wiki without their user accounts from Mexico such details. So I assume, it's just a fun. Smile

According "official" lead (Twitter => Ham radio)

OK, me again, very suspicious.
Let's reconstruct the twitter thing.

So the potential gamejacker had 5 hours to send the sound. And if you doubt, the files and settings can lay for months in the data folders of a game master, waiting for THE DAY. And we know, Cloverfield ARG was such an impact, that the urge to have another CF ARG produced many other grassroots (finished, collapsed and still to run).

IF - if the call were made BEFORE Bad Robot posted the image, I'd neglect all my doubts (ok, perhaps part of them). But everything in "aftermath" is suspicious.

So let's play profiler. I am CF ARG fanatic (OK, I am indeed). Now I want to make my own game, to hack into Bad Robot. I prepare all files. Then I wait. For years. (Like 500rads).

Then I analyse the image and first random string I find I use for name of the ham call. If I used Facebook image, I could name it 8P1. Surely, the longer the random string is, the fewer google results you will have.

Then I call myself with an anagram Cold Elf [Rev I]. Other CF fans will be happy to see it's related.

(Optional): Then I post my finding and claim I found it. (This optional would suck, better is let the other player find the string on they own)

Now let's look back to Bad Robots. Any ARG ran by BR had NO allusions about movie. Cloverfield ARG had no anagrams of "Cloverfield". Star Trek ARG had no "Star Trek" named items. So naming the username Cold Elf [Rev I] would mean, somebody want to wink to players. "It's me, I'm related, it's official".

So imho it's a gamejack. A nice one, using all digital tools. But nothing to do with Bad Robot.

Man, how cool would an ARG using all analog tools be though? Like, codes hidden in the inside repeating edge of a record, or hunting down an anolog antenna for a tube tv? Like, cold war spy arg.

Speaking of which, as I went to google analog I got distracted by the Google doodle about John Baird. He invented the analog mechanical tv, and apparently it has rotors inside it too. And the first transmission was a creepy dummy who looked not unlike Howdy Doody. Coulda sworn it was a Mickey Mouse doll.

Man that puzzle is getting inside my head. Sigh.

Anyways, interesting tidbit. I knew About Philo Farnsworth, but not Baird.

Oh yes, I've played some such ARGs (well, they weren't totally analog, but some live events were). Indeed, the immersion was unbelivably intense. Like, you hunt in a taxi with some co-players down a murder, or observe a suspicious character for hours in a cafe, or visit the house of a key figure in order to see this person beeing murdered (and being confronted with the killer in person) to name such.

The huge positive point of such events is its authenticity of fiction, it'sn haptic, olfactorial, gustable. On the contra is the problem of location - if you aren't there, you cannot take part. So the good balance between analogue and digital is good for an ARG for huge participation.

(Sidenote:) In this gamejack we have only few participators, who crack the codes (if they aren't part of gamejack) and the big audience who try to reconstruct it or just to observe. It's unhealthy state of an ARG imho.

Still waiting but going back into the fold

Oh boy that last bit there sure was something!! I just couldn't get past the part where one string of text amongst all the jibber jabber was found by using random program, not steno or contrast or whatever else was already used when they first came out Rolling Eyes

I had to go on Reddit and watch silently but the scene was like this>

That was a Reddit related meme thing, add your custom text

Anywhooooooos, I have not received a peep from SP, not that they were entitled to write back but I also did not get a customary thanks for being a customer, liking our products etc.. So for now I will look around at some other games, keep a eye on this with sighs and longing!

..........Someday I am going to grab a few of you folks in diffrent parts of the world and we are going to do a big world hunt arg deal with lots of swag!!

We are going to use all our coding, and cipher and clue within a clue and storytelling knowledge and we are going to make a game for all games to be measured by!!! Sure we will be in our floating hover diapers at the time and maybe we will have to have our clones and robots nannies do a lot of the work BUT ITS GOING TO HAPPEN DAMMIT!!!! Cursing

See you soon... hopefully, old dusty Ms. J Foily!

Up above when pixie linked to John Goodman's IMDB that lead me into 10 Cloverfield's listing. I noticed there now 4 cast memebers listed:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Mary Elizabeth Winstead ... Michelle
John Goodman
John Gallagher Jr.
Jamie Clay ... State Trooper 42

Is this new info?

Also the name Jaime brings me back to Cloverfield, naturally

Yeah, definitely to your sidenote. It's a pattern I've been noticing with participation in these args over the past couple years. It's like the internet is losing it's ability to function as a hivemind. People's attention spans are getting to be so incredibly short these days, people are off in a billion directions and lose interest overnight. It was frustrating being an observer of whatever the Holidays Steam Sale mystery was. There was absolutely *something* there but Redditors are so impatient they convinced themselves there wasn't.

On the other hand, i agree with the advent of mainstreaming cryptography skills the puzzles in these things are getting more and more obtuse and I think puppet masters are not doing a good job keeping things identifiably in game and feeding out bread crumbs over time. And with the attention span of the average Redditors, these game mechanics are needed more than ever. Seems like people have even lost interrest in Cicada - for years now their last uncrypted missive has sat, unsolved.

Bad Robot has an especialy bad track record with these things though, I have vague memories of the Lost arg that went nowehere and then down a similar game jacking path.

And yeah, I'm not sure I would call what you're describing as an full on arg - more like interactive theatre, all though when you get to projects like Jeff Hull's, I guess there gets to be some overlap. But it is limiting, you're right. I can't just hop on a plane to San Francisco, let alone wrangle an invite to whatever the Latitude was, for example.

Although there's still a nice, not so prohibitively expensive idea in using exlusively analog tools - much analog tech is easily available, and cheaply so at your average thrift store, or grandparent's basement. Imagine getting Redditors to have start digging up cathode ray tvs and finding degaussing rings.

Of Dreams and Args...

This possible ARG is getting into my head. Last night I dreamt my Swamp Pop order arrived and it had not 3 puzzle pieces but one full and one half-full puzzle. One was the good old Eifle Tower puzzle with the Cloverfield green smoke with a message on the back that said "Tell Them!" while the other was a puzzle of MGP itself, half finished, with the Statue of Liberty in the background minus head.

I got so excited as I was snapping pics to share that I woke up, understandably pissed that I just dreamt of epicness and woke to find it was nothing but a dream.

Oh well.

Not exactly, there were actually more cast list members on IMDB and Wikipedia back when this movie was just Valencia. Which, man, I should have got a screenshot of. When the trailer dropped all those names got scrubbed. There's also still names being held back from IMDB. We only just recently found out who's doing the soundtrack, and I can't seem to find an head editor for instance.

Although interestingly back when this was Valencia, one of the clues I found to it being something more is a name in the art department of a character designer. This character designer only does monsters for video games and a "secret Bad Robot project".

https://www.artstation.com/artist/ikameka

One of the places he's worked at is Turtle Rock Games - aka one time Valve east. You can see why I was convinced this was a Valve movie.

Also interesting: JJ used fake editors in the Masthead of wired to seed clues. So it's not beyond the pale to think the cast list could be hiding somehting. Not that I think it is FWIW.

Oh yes, this attention span is already to short for internet contents. I read somewhere, twitter were not popular among youngsters because "too many text".

To Steam incident: it's like Snowden mentioned once, as Greenberg asked him, whether he is afraid for his life. Snodwen said: "not about his life, but about the fact people will speak about new discoveries some weeks and then the life will go along again" (or so). This ephemeral nature of human mentality is indeed what I am afraid of.

About brunging cryptography into mainstream - as I read your reply, I understood suddenly, that that's it! This is what we need in the times of total observations, governmental surveillance and ban of encrypted smartphones - we need Aufklärung, Enlightment about selfdefens via cryptography. So it's a wide field for ARG puppet masters, but a great one. Important one. Serious games at its best. Here is my hope.

Yes, Bad Robot had also its dark days. The LOST ARGs or experiences (perhaps with exception of "The LOST Experience" itself) were not always successful, they collapsed, often because of financial situation. I still love people behind the BR projects, even if they were sometimes very nonsatisfying (like Dharma recruiting - oh man, what begun as an amazing - AMAZING to be clear - project, collapsed due financial reasons).

My another hope is in grassroots. People, who gamejack so professionally, should stop to steal somebodys fame and become famous themselfes.

I experiences some grassroots, which changed my life, and where I was suddenly a PM myself (not the same project though, so meta was saved). This is what I wish to everybody - to enjoy well designed - original - ARG without thinking about its authenticity.

There was about 3 more names than that. An older woman, older man, younger woman (pictured) and younger man. Could probably find them in the Wikipedia edits. There was some legacy effect where they used to pop up in a gallery when you googled search 10 Cloverfield Lane evn after the trailer dropped, but I guess the links updated. They're mostly pretty small name people though. Likely extras.
