[META/SPEC] Halo 2 Connections Massive Spoilers Within

Good afternoon. I'm glad you were all able to make it.

I would like to start a thread seperate from our generic Halo 2 discussion thread in which we who have played the game may discuss our interpretations of the events therein.

Since I'm a decent human being, the rest of this post will be in spoiler tags. I heavily endorse this for future posters.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The big one:

Fact: The Covenant did not expect Humans to be on Earth.
Fact: They believe that Earth is the start of their Great Journey.
Fact: The Forerunners built a final redoubt called The Ark from where the Halos could be activated.

Hypothesis: The Earth/Luna system is the Ark, and humanity are the descendants of the Forerunner.

The following is more wild SPEC, but I enjoy the concept of planetary-scale construction.

I bring Luna into the picture, because it recieves more screen time than it normally merits. One particularly catching moment is in the first opening scenes; a Prophet, muttering some wise saying to himself, is faded out to a picture of, you guessed it, Luna.

The most interesting thing is the placement of the shot. Look at any image of a Prophet where you can see their headdress; at the forehead is a tiny holographic ring, a replica of Halo. In the cutscene, the ring is replaced by Luna during the fade effect. Having been involved in the movie-making business, this is more than a cool similarity. We call it foreshadowing.

So, that's my hypothesis. Additionally, I will postulate that the Gravemind was totally sweet, as it spoke in rhyme and riddle.

As an extension:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Going on the notion that there was something that bends time on Reach, I'm going to say that it wasn't 2552 humans that were the Forerunner, but humans far far in the future that just shoved their technology through a time warp.

I thought the same thing, except:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I considered that Earth itself might be the Ark, since we know the Forerunners can terraform and build really big stuff.

But then I got to wondering - is the Ark a place, or a device? When one says Ark, what immediately comes to mind is Noah's Ark, which makes it sound like Earth. But then there's this:

Ark - The chest containing the Ten Commandments written on stone tablets, carried by the Hebrews during their desert wanderings. Also called Ark of the Covenant.

So I'm thinking maybe what Team Jersey diffused at Chawla base was the Ark.

Then again, maybe not. Razz

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
well, putting 2 and 2 together, they said the only place to activate the remaining rings was earth. And we know (fairly confidently) that the artifact on earth was a detonator for the Halos. Personally, I truly believe that the artifact is the Ark. But it is quite interesting what smoke brought up about the moon... I'll have to play through single player again paying more attention to the details.. very interesting...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
personally I assumed while playing that the ship Master Chief returned to Earth on at the end was the ark. After the final question "so where is this ark?" (or something similar), the next thing we see is MC dropping out of slipspace right by Earth. I could be wrong, but it seemed like a natural transition to me.

Here's another fact: The head brute guy could not activate the halo, even though he had the index. Notice how the brute did not kill <whatever-her-name-is> Keyes when he got the index? He kept her alive, and when they got to the Halo activation room, he was telling her to insert the index. Forcing her. Obivously because he could not.

[spec]
Are humans the only people that can activate the Halos?
How were the Covenant going to activate them? Kidnapping humans?
[/spec]

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I finished the game the other day and I sat around for about half an hour trying to figure out why the Covenant went to Earth in the first place. I honestly was ready for them to start digging/hunting for a Forerunner artifact. With Bungie's predelictions for alien ruins buried in African jungles ala Pathways into Darkness, I figured we'd be running through Forerunner facilities beneath a pyramid somewhere in the southern hemisphere for most of the game.

I guess I was wrong. Smile

Then I started the game over again (on Heroic) and immediately noticed the foreshadowing going on with the moon.

I doubt that Earth is the Ark. The whole "hithertofor undiscovered civilization" idea doesn't strike me as inspired enough, especially given the quality of the writing in Halo 2.

But, just for the sake of rumination, please consider this:

In Marathon 2, Durandal shows up at the S'pht home world with the 10th Mjolnir mk IV in tow, hunting for new and exciting tech (among other things). During the course of the game, you learn that the S'pht were able to move whole planets through the Halo 2 equivalent of slipspace. Just for spec's sake, I'd say that whatever planet we originated on had a moon, too - and when the fewment hit the windmill, we jumped the moon into orbit around a safe planet.

Now, judging from dialogue samples in both H1 and H2, at some point in the past, Master Chief initiated the firing sequence on Halo 04 successfully in order to destroy a spreading Flood invasion (that is, unless 343 Guilty Spark is unable to to tell the difference between the MC and a cyborg rising from a completely different technology). Also, during Halo 2's development, an interview came out wherein Joe Staten talked about having to depict battles that took place 800,000 years ago - I'll bet that shows up in Halo 3.

So the third one should be absolutely crazy/good. The time travel spec is the only one I'm comfortable making at the moment - I need to play a lot more H2 before I make more.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When the prophet mentions the ark, it is a widely believed spec that it might be the earth/lunasystem, or the ship they take off of High Charity in the end. My [SPEC] is that the ark is the artifact that is in Oni. They say the ark is the key and the only way to start the Great Journey. We also find out that there is a remote device capable of detonating all Halos at once. We also know that it seems only humans can operate forerunner devices. (Index etc. maybe that it the case with the ark/artifact) We know from ILB that the artifact was a "timer" of sorts and when activated and de-activated it sent out a EMP blast. Could it be that the EMP blast was actually a HIGH powered radio transmission that was meant to be able to travel lightyears in order to communicate with every Halo installation? And when activated it turned all Halo systems to standby and then when deactivated it returned them to normal dormant status. If the timer was allowed to continue the artifact itself would not have blown us up, but rather the blast of every Halo Installation at once would have killed us.

Also there is a biblical reference to the ark. Some have noted that it might be a reference to Noah's Ark. Um.... not that I'm a theologist but.... Ark and the COVENANT are looking for it.... i.e. ARK OF THE COVENANT!!!!! DOH!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The ark is the ship that MC is in at the end of Halo2. I think guilty spark's comments cement this. The weird thing is that the "tire shaped artifact" from ILB seems to be the remote dentonation device for the Halo's. I think that the ILB plots put the device on standby and it couldn't set off the halo's without an unsuccessful try at the index/core reuinion but I might be wrong.

I also think that it's SOOOOO creepy that the forerunners had to activate the halo's and sacrifice themselves. It feeds the notion that they had pre-seeded worlds with their DNA so that they might rise again (in some form) unfettered by the flood. Unfortunately, it seems that the flood is back and pretty damn mean. eg. that guy on installation 05. seems he figured out the ring after a few million years or whatever. oops.

Am I the only one thinking cortona just bumped into the "toth" of halo-verse in the covvie's computer right before the end of the game?

My initial reaction when I heard about the ark at the end of the game was to believe that it was the tire shaped artifact on earth... regardless, it's all idle speculation at this point.

Has anyone beat it on Legendary yet? In the first game you were rewarded with an extra scene for beating legendary... I was wondering if they did the same thing again?

The name you're looking for is "Miranda". Dun-dun-dunnnnnn... If you've watched the web-version of the "Making of" Video (still on bungie.net, I believe) you'll see special resonance of having a character named Miranda in the game.

However, it looks like it was Cortana who pulled the dirty trick this time. Hmmm....

-- Steve's still looking for connections and resonances. Whee!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Near the end, Cortana mentions that there is some sort of resistance on the Covenant network, something that was in the way of her accessing which she found really strange. Something was trying to stop her. [SPEC] A covenant AI? [Even more SPEC] THE PIOUS FLEA?!?!?

Interesting no?
