But what industry is there for Etruscan pottery?

Oy vey. I don't even know how to respond.

Can this be an attempt at humor? I would hope, but my instincts tell me no. Better treat it as serious.

Feros, sweetie, I was an English major. About as non-specialized as you can get, outside of those other two Majors For The Confused (j/k!): Communications and Political Science.

The "Etruscan pottery" thing was a joke, intended to be the most obscure reference I could come up with on the fly. It's a form of hyperbole.

Now, a degree in English may not be much more useful than a degree in Etruscan pottery (there is no such thing, boychik...archeology is probably the closest you can get), it isn't particularly specialized.

Quote:
Now I may not be a genius when it comes to Etruscan pottery or poetry or many things but I can tell you I know my fair share of information from differential equations to thermodynamics and static's and what I have learned is that it is important to understand that each person has their own genius and it is important to recognize their abilities. Sure the Machinist doesn't know how to do complex analysis but I need him because his skills are a necessary part of the production process.

Even the stupidest man knows something you do not, and it is better to glean that information from them then disregard them and never learn from them.

Believe me, I take the part of the Talmud that says, "Who is wise? He who learns from everyone," very seriously.

But that doesn't mean I want to have lunch with the stupidest man every day.

The burgeoning field of movie props/reproductions, of course.

Information is important but it is impossible to expect everyone or even a small percentage of people to know specialized information. A good example is if I ask a random person if they know the Bernouli equation 99% of the people will give me a blank stare, and I don't expect them to know.

T.S. Eliot is specialized information? Funny...

Notice my horrible grammar, lack of punctuation, and run on sentances, clearly the mark of a science major.

Can't do it. Going to be mean. Sorry in advance, everyone, but I...can't...help...myself...

You forgot "spelling," hon.

And, no, not clearly the mark of a science major. I know plenty of science majors who can handle the English language just fine.

Either way, while not necessarily something of which to be ashamed, bad spelling, grammar and punctuation is not something of which to be proud. Neither is the inability to detect humor.

Don't ever call me "hon" or "Sweetie" I despise when people talk to me in a condescending manner and to me this was read as condescending. I already pointed out my less than stellar ability to write. Yeah so I made a mistake I was writing in the 15 mins I had between classes.

I admit I did not know what your major was until just now, and I cannot remember reading much of T.S. Eliot does that make me unintelligent? No of course not, just simply put I care little about literature/poetry it's just not my thing.

Did I ever say T.S. Eliot was "specialized" no, but then again to me it is to a certain degree. While you spend your time reading T.S. Eliot I spend my time reading science books and trying to understand complex equations, not literature. Do I consider you less intelligent if you know little calculus? No of course not.

btw I put that stupid thing about my writing because:
A)I didn't want to take the time to make my post look neat, concise, well written, spelled correctly, ect. Oh I can write it just takes me longer than it does for you, and making first and second drafts for a forum post is too time consuming for me.

B) I figured if I don't make that remark I will get some wise ass remark(from you) about my ability to write. I guess I was wrong. Next time I will say nothing.

Did I EVER say I was proud of my poor writing abilities? NO I did not, did I imply I was NO, but are engineers the best writers, not in my experience, unless it is a technical document. But then again I have received an A in every single English class I have ever taken but what do I know.

Gah your entire post shows how misinterpreted I was. I too was using Etruscan Pottery as an extreme example of a field specialization that means nothing to the real world, but I should have made that statement more pronounced.

I won't bother quoting you because it's just too darn long.

However, you took seriously what Phaedra said, quite clearly, in jest. That you did not take the time to read the entirety of the conversation is not her fault. Next time, don't start getting offended until you've read the whole story.

As for your writing skills, plenty of people here are capable of putting in disclaimers about the messiness of their posts without sounding as though it is something they are proud of.

And well, perhaps you do not understand the value of more esoteric knowledge, such as the now belabored Etruscan pottery, but it DOES have relevance to the oft praised "Real World". (if you want to know exactly how, pm me and I'll explain)

Usually when people denigrate something as being categorically inferior, it's a sign of their own insecurities. For example, men who have fears that they are "unmanly" may be more prone to discredit anything a woman does/says. They're going to make more gendered related jokes and are more likely to be sexually harrassing. Why? Because in order to reaffirm their identity as MEN (and therefore good, noble, intelligent, worthy, moral, sensible - take your pick) they must, vocally, contrast themselves with women.

In this situation, you appeared to be affirming how wonderful it was that you were using poor grammar or punctuation, that you were not "bad" by being "scholarly", or like someone who does not live in the "REAL WORLD".

Smile Now, I don't know your motives, and I don't really care. I have to get back to work. If you were misinterpreted, then I think you should be more careful about your wording, not post when you're in a hurry, or use more smilies. Smile

btw: apologies for my spelling, i don't have time to go to dictionary.com Wink

I choose my answer wisely. When I heard that call here at work I started laughing so hard. Everyone must have thought I was crazy.
