thebruce, could I impose on you for a full-plot synopsis of the campaign game? I don't have, and most likely will never buy, an xbox, and I have no illusions about getting spoiled long before I get to play the game on a PC. And honestly, I'm dying to know details. Pleeeeeeease?

Very Happy

very very quickly - halo story page on halo.bungie.org should have every line of dialogue in about a month:

BTW, PAY ATTENTION, OBVIOUSLY THIS IS THE ENTIRE GAME SO BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR MOUSE POINTERS

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are a bunch of cutscenes showing the Covenant discussing the events of the first game.

You start off getting to Earth just before the Covenant. You're honored for the actions on the first Halo and then they arrive and start taking out orbital installations with MAC guns - similar to those near Reach. You're on one of these and they start boarding, so most of the first level is just trying to repel the boarders. Eventually you watch the other installations explode from inside - the Covenant brought bombs. You find the bomb on the installation and turn it off. Cutscene starts here showing MC taking the bomb to the airlock of the installation, riding/guiding it through space to a Covenant ship and using it to blow the ship apart. He then lands on another ship headed into the atmosphere.

MC and some others crash-land in Old Mombasa. Goal is to get back to New Mombasa, where you were headed in the first place. This seems to be the only place the Covenant landed. At the end of the level there is a Covenant ship jumping to slipspace - MCs ship jumps on for the ride.

More Covenant cutscenes occur with the Elite responsible for the first Halo being made an 'Arbiter' - a warrior to do the Prophets' bidding. He is then sent to rope in a Heretic on a Forerunner installation. It's here that you get control of the Arbiter (!) As you plunge yourself into the installation you begin to encounter the Flood, and around the next corner is our old friend, 343 Guilty Spark. He's the one whispering in the Heretic's ear. The Brute leader (I forget his name) seizes 343.

In front of MC and the Covenant when they emerge from slipspace? Another Halo - this one definitely NOT the size of a tire. ;D Cortana mentions that the largest Covenant fleet she's ever seen is here.

Now I forget a lot of the order of things from this point, because, well, I was tired. Basically though the Prophets want to use the ring, MC and co. are trying to stop them, MC eventually gets captured by this weird plant thing - the Covies get the Index, apparently only a human can use it though - is this confirmation that the Forerunner are human? - so they capture a human. In the meantime the Brutes unseat the Elites and so there is a Covenant Civil War; the Arbiter is pretty much turned against the Prophets due to the large plant thing that captured him too.

LPT (Large Plant Thing) puts MC on a Covenant world to pursue the Index there. It gets off the planet but MC continues pursuing the Prophets back to Earth, forced to leave Cortana behind. The Covies get to the control room and force Miranda Keyes to use the Index, but the Arbiter and Sargeant Johnson (!) stop the detonation sequence. 2401 Punitive Tangent, a friend of mr. 343 also shows up around now and reveals that the shutting down of Halo's detonation triggers a communication sequence to the other Halos allowing them to be remotely detonated. Not from the Halo they're on though, but from what he refers to as "The Ark". When he's asked where The Ark is... black.

We fade back in on the Forerunner ship that one of the Prophets is taking to Earth. MC lets the UNSC know he's onboard. Credits roll. One more scene is shown on the Covenant world where Cortana was left. The LPT is there now, about to question her. Cut to black.

This is bad: I signed up to be notified through messenger that I had friend requests and stuff coming in through Live, and this just makes it so I want to leave work even more so I can go home and play against my lovely favorite beekeepers!

Crosspost: applies here too I think Cool

Sorry but most of this post is going to be spoiler mode. I finished the campaign mode so here goes:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
First I finished in 9 hours - Bungie intended a 20 hour gameplay - I did explore every nook and cranny too BTW. Not that I am faulting them at all. It just became quickly apparent that this game was designed for multiplayer. And I believe that's where a lot of people get peeved about the game. I have to admit, I was dissapointed that the E3 Demo sequence was not in the game as well as a few other little trailer pieces too. But enough knocking......

As a whole I was greatly impressed by the detail work that went into this game and made it visually electrifying. Did anyone notice in co-op or multiplayer modes you can actually see your reflection in Mst. Chf visor? Or how shiny certain thing are in the game with the newly modeled surface designed to show off the smooth curves that the XBOX graphics engine is capable of. Or even the physics that have been retooled to be a bit more realistic, how the sounds change from environment to environment and even based on your surrounding room or field size. Bungie has trluy raised the bar across the board on this one. But not in the way that most expect. This is an all-new game. This, as mentioned, is not Halo 1.5

Even the storyline has dramtically changed:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I was not expecting to play as an Elite - neat treat! Learning the reasoning behind what had happend on Installation 04 from the Covenent view was quite enlightening. Not to mention shed some light on the whole religious idealology that they have and the blind faith. The introduction of the new creature is sure to be an interesting development in Halo 3 and beyond ("I am the culmination of all your sins..."[loose paraphrase after no sleep in 18 hours] - Had to force my jaw shut at this point...) The entrance of the Prophets into the game and the political agenda of the Prophet of Truth was a nice twist - as was the death of the other 2 to further his agenda. I was a bit dissapoint by the ending as it seemed lacking in my eyes. That was before realizing the expectation I had built for myself as to how the game should end and what outcome I should see. So, my own stupid fault there I guess. I had hoped that it would have gone a little more in depth with the "Arc" that 343 mentioned. (Hmmm... "Arc of the Covenant" and maybe it's the artifact - remote detonator) and where it was. But again that desire was based on my own hopes of seeing a tie in with ILB and getting back to save Earth. When the storyline is looked at as a whole, it was quite edifying really. It covered a few missed parts of the Human story and opened a whole new door with the Covenant view and the internal strife going on there.
...and as an good story goes as we have learned in ILB, left me with more questions than answers.

Let's remember something- although I do love the game and think it has surpassed the multitudes expectations in many ways, Bungie had a deadline. That deadline was caused by our screams to PLAY NOW! Had they not been pressured to get it out maybe some of you that had yelled about the delay in getting it out would not subsequently be whining now about how terrible it is. You created your own mousetrap this time.

For the rest of us though that have seen the time, effort, and skill that went into this development - all we can do is say, "Well maybe next time. After all look at what they did in the 2nd edition - imagine what they will do in the 3rd...

So, with that, I tip my hat to the Bungie demi-gods with a heartfelt well-done! Followed with an anxious yearning for Halo 3 - and the next viral marketing campaign. (Heck, this one worked so well why wouldn't they do another!)

I too ordered the SmartJoy FRAG. I haven't spent enough time with it in Halo 2 to truly say how I like it. However, within an hour of practicing with it in Halo I noticed a significant increse in headshots all around. It's important to have a good mouse.

Also, I'm pretty sure that you don't need a memory card to save button configurations. I don't have one and it remembers that I prefer to have "E" as the X button. Trout me if I'm wrong. Smile

I hope you are not wrong... I just had no luck until I plugged one in on saving presets. I do not have a card and will try myself tonight.

just incase...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

They had three years to make this game. THREE YEARS. I'm severely dissapointed in the amount of story given to us, and the single player campain didn't seem polished at all. They have 500 years of story written for the Haloverse, and they could've given us a little freaking more to chew on. The cut scenes were so bad, it made the Halo 1 cut scences look like full motion video from Final Fantasy X. All the cut scenes were done using the in-game engine, no pre-rendered CGI full motion video. I am fine with this as this is not where the problem lies. The problem is with how the textures were getting applied to all the models after the cut scene began. The scene would begin, and then stuff would start appearing/getting more textured withing the first few seconds of each scene. How unprofessional is that? It's similar to how jpegs used to load on the web, appearinig blurry, then getting clearer during each pass. Like a characters head would be on screen with NO FACE, it would start talking, then the face texture would apear on the character model. That's what's happening during the beginning of EACH cut scene. Now obviously, this is a limitation of the Xbox and that's fine. But for a company who's main reasoning to sell out to MS so they could guarantee the same experience for everyone using one single platform, they should know the limitations of said platform (Xbox) by now. I know Bungie is not the best in the graphics dept, I'm fine with that. But they should know that it looks unprofessional and is unacceptable.

I didn't realize the goal of this game until I read this article in wired. Halo 2 is a vehicle to get people signed up on Xbox Live only. That is evident to me now. They should've just named the game "Halo: Xbox Live", because it's obviously where most of Bungie's resources went. To me it doesn't deserve the addition of "2".

I know this is my first impression of the game. But as someone who wanted to play Halo 2 primarily from a story driven POV, I was yawning most of the way through and left high and dry when it started to get interesting.

Damn! This turned into a rant somehow. [/rant]

Here's another random thought:

Remember when Dana mentioned that her aunt was making a black button sage variety of honey? Somepeople thought that was a halo reference because the controlle rhas a black button and one of the multiplayer colors is sage. Now that Halo 2 is out, has anyone tried anything with that. I'm still avoiding spoilers so I haven't looked at the list of easter eggs. I woul drathe rhear about it through this forum.

Yes, I highly doubt there is anything at all related to ILB's mention of balck button sage, I just don't have anything better to do right now than play Halo 2 and my XBox is at home.

1. Only four people worked on multiplayer. So stop saying they paid a ton of attention to it ...they really didn't.

2. I did not have this cutscene problem that so many people speak of. Your XBox is probably older. My older PS2 MELTS under San Andreas. Deal with it.

3. The story is as big as the first game. You just lost the sense of so much discovery cos this isn't a new thing.

People expect far too much of sequels these days.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Oh, and I agree with the SPEC on the LPT being a flood brain - but it also seems to have its own agenda.

Stood in line at the Redmond Town Center EB from 11:30PM to THREE IN THE FRICKIN' MORNING. There were close to 600 people waiting in line at this tiny EB.

Because it was close, a bunch of the Halo2 devs showed up in the pimped out XBox Live Escalade (complete with spinner rims). They tossed shwag up into the crowd (poor devs don't have good throwing arms though... it took them a few tries to get things like sports bottles and empty backpacks up a few meters).

The biggest disappointment of the night was the fact that the Bungie folks were there signing autographs for only about an hour. The 50 or so people who'd been standing in line since around 1PM that afternoon got some extra special treatment when the doors finally opened and caused the rest of the line to have to wait a great deal longer when the clock struck 12:00AM.

Am I bitter? Perhaps a bit. If the devs had stayed longer or the line had moved more quickly, I would have been able to get my limited edition copy signed.

So far, I've only played about 2 or 3 hours of constant, non-stop gameplay. Takin' it easy. It's been 3 years Wink

Before I say anything else, I haven't played Halo 2 yet. However, let's look at Halo 1. It was a short game with a decent story, well done gameplay and great atmosphere / presentation.

From what I hear, Halo 2 is not that much different. Halo 1 did not strike me as the best game of all time. I did like it. I liked it a lot because of the kind of work that went into the presentation and the fact that, despite all else, it felt like a labor of love.

If your impression of Halo 1 was the same as mine, let me ask if Halo 2 evokes a similar reaction. Strip all the hype from both games. Did you like the first, and would you have liked it if the exact same game had been published on the mac and not on the xbox and nobody had really heard of it? Sans hype and sans anti-hype, what do you really think of Halo 2?

If I ever manage to get an XBox (and needless to say, Halo 2 will be my FIRST game purchase Very Happy,) I'm definitely getting one of these puppies. I was just checking out H2 at my local EB after work, and whilst I was truly and duly impressed with the game, I was having a bee-otch of a time playing it with the gamepad, even with the right thumbstick inversed. Too used to the trusty old mouse/KB combo, I guess, it just feels far more natural to me.
