Halo, which has a very rich and vibrant story as games go, would get eaten alive by most good SF novels. Of course, most good SF novels would take about 10 hours of movie to render, not a double handfull of clips in 10 hours of first person shooter.

Anyhow, thoughts on people who enjoy these things. I suspect you're looking for people who:

1) Could accept the medium for what it was but could be willing to look past it. I mean, yeah, it's a marketing campaign, but, as they say, don't look behind the curtain.

2) Enjoy the story, not the medium - People who can tell you who their favorite SF author from the 50s or 60s as well as their current favorite. People who play odd little role playing games that 99% of the population has never heard of.

3) Enjoy that whole "sense of community" thing.

4) Enjoy the bragging rights of enhotenating axons, getting a live call, or solving a puzzle, but don't expect anything out of it in the long term. (And will give a pat on the back when someone else achieve's same.)

I'm sure there are other qualities....

As far the as the MS angle, well that's no excuse. Microsoft was paying for the ARG, when you play you don't have to buy Halo 2 or an Xbox then you can laugh as MS spent money on you and they got nothing from you in return.

That said, I would have almost preferred it if it wasn't linked to MS and Halo 2. I mean, I would have liked to have the "mysterious" aspect of it played up a bit longer. With the whole trailer deal it took some fun out of it I think, although I suppose you had to advertise somewhere...

well, you're obviously not a fan of microsoft or the video game... but either way, ilovebees was a loss leader... there was no direct profit from the funding of the ARG. Indirectly, there may have been some people who ended up buying Halo 2, maybe an Xbox, because of it, but that's advertising... advertising itself doesn't make profit. They would be fools to think that every single person who played ilovebees would buy Halo 2... more foolish to make that their ultimate goal. No, ilovebees was simply intended as an advertising campaign (by Microsoft) and an art form at the same time (by the PMs).

Whether you buy Halo 2 afterwards or not wasn't the main issue, depending on who you ask. But just like I see signs on the side of highways which I couldn't care less about, there will be people who will see and hear ilovebees, and totally ignore the game... that's advertising my friend... acceptable risk

But I think, to a certain extent, they were rewarded by increasing goodwill among the gamer community toward Micro$oft.

And, they may have bought a few more fanatically loyal Halo-ites. Without ILB, I might have waited longer to get my xBox and Halo 2, and continued mooching off Kali.

Incidentally, as much as we joked about the idea that perhaps the point of the relay exercises was to train the largest, most organized Halo clan ever, it turned out that that was obviously not the intent of the PMs.

BUT...

I was talking to Kali last night (she's been playing with other beekeepers on Live) and she was very impressed with how instinctive the teamwork was among beekeepers.

So, they may have done it after all.

I'd agree with this. If it hadn't been for the bees, I probably wouldn't have been as keen to go out and buy H2 on release day as I did (doing my part to contribute to that biggest opening day evar).

I would not have even bought the game if not for ILB (and it would have been my loss!)
