 		What if the movie is just Howard Stambler holding people hostage in his celler and showing them how he likes to f*ck with people on the Internet and using FAPT to trick them into thinking he's got a daughter and see what kind dumb stuff he can get them to do.

Perhaps the people trying to get into the celler are are bunch of crazed Reddit users trying to find out what the hell he got Megan for her birthday.

One of us carved HELP into the glass.

Some here. I am almost convinced this movie wouldn't show any sfx monsters (perhaps just as props or in the barrel). Monster movies are mostly parables about crisis of politics, society, environmental decay. It the global geopolitical scale, or as a chamber play. Original Cloverfield was actually about ecological problems mixed with horrors of a hightec arm being confused, scared and in amok. People like to forget, this Cloverfield monster was a baby, desperatedly looking for its mother.

Now we have another setting. A paranoid dude, filled with conspiracy theories and old Cold War Angst is about to "save" people from the horrors "out there", locking them in shelter, even putting chains on them. This is how I think about the movie, perhaps it will be pretty different. With twists, as Dan mentioned in interviews. Becaus shelter topos us pretty conventional, and JJ loves to break traditions.

But I suppose, there won't be any monsters beside the human monsters. It may be very French existencialist movie (that's why so kany Eiffel Towers).

 		Absolutely, that's been my theory all along! I think I brought up No Exit in the mega thread pretty early on.

I loved existentialist/absurdist theatre as a young student (as well as the Hitchcock and Twillight Zone stuff DT and JJA keep mentioning). So I'm pretty stoked! Give me a tense, tight, character-driven narrative over explosions and monsters any day!

Actually, I wouldn't be too disapointed with all of the above, either. Explosions are so much better when they've been earned.

I've really got my fingers crossed for something more like Alien than Aliens.

yes. It's the Dad's message to us, embedded in the HTML source code. You can use a "view source" tool to see it plainly, or use the Javascript debugger console to have it display indirectly. Either way, it has already been mentioned. (Linked for the trout below). It was there on the day the site first appeared.

 		The pace of this ARG has been just a tad frustrating…CHI dead drop on Friday, followed by FAPT update yesterday & then the (late) Tagruato EoTM today -- and STILL no real leads.

If the PMs stick to the schedule of past weeks, we might get a FAPT update tonight, hopefully this time with an actual lead (fingers crossed).

As to a couple points from yesterday's FAPT post:

Russia flies spyplanes over the US, and the US flies spyplanes over Russia, and have been August 2002.

v37 already linked an article that mentioned this, and it doesn't exactly allow Russia to fly spyplanes over the US "whenever they feel like it, " but the US is one of the 34 Countries/State Parties that are signatories of the Treaty of Open Skies. This allows a certain number of observational flights in the air space of each signatory. Under the Treaty of Open Skies, The Russian Federation and Republic of Belarus Group of States Parties (function as a single entity for quota allocation purposes) a certain number of flights over the US per year. The US is, in turn, entitled to 8 of 31 annual flights available over Russia/Belarus. Flights by treaty members seem to be considered routine, and the country requesting/conducting the flight has to give a few months advance notice. In addition, the data/images acquired have to be shared with all the signatories.

I'm not sure Howard's explanation of why "the Soviet's" shot down their own satellite makes that much sense:

The "Soviet's" could have just changed/tightened their encryption so that Howard/SPAWAR couldn't hack it's data anymore. And if that didn't work, they could have just shut down the telemetry but left the satellite itself in orbit - which is much easier than shooting it down. Unless the PMs are trying to imply that Howard/SPAWAR would've somehow still been able to hack into the satellite & turn it's recording/transmissions back on again.

In any case, while it may not be that common for a government to shoot down it's own satellite, it's also not that crazy. One reason would be to test an anti-satellite missile (though in this case they probably wouldn't bring down an expensive spy satellite). In 1985, the US shot down the P78-1 (Solwind) satellite to test the ASM-135 ASAT anti-satellite missile. In 1989, a U.S. fighter jet destroyed a U.S. satellite (by firing a modified air-to-air missile into space from an altitude of 80,000 feet). I'm not sure what the reason was in that instance - whether it was a test of feasibility of the air-to-air missile's use for this purpose, or if it was simply to bring that satellite down. And in January 2007, China shot down one of it's own Fengyun series weather satellites (apparently to test a ground launched multistage solid-fuel missile). This Chinese "test' is the largest recorded creation of space debris in history, and in April 2011, debris from the Chinese test passed close by the ISS.

Another reason for a government to shoot down their own satellite would be to keep the tech (on-board the actual satellite - computers, cameras, gadgets) out of other countries hands to prevent them form reverse engineering it for themselves. In February 2008, the US Navy shot down the USA-193 (NROL-21) when it had malfunctioned shortly after deployment, reportedly to prevent it from falling to Earth on its own with a full tank (about 1,000 pounds) of fuel (frozen, toxic hydrazine propellant). http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/space/02/20/satellite.shootdown/

There is speculation however, that the US government was more concerned with it's tech falling into another country's hands if any chunks of debris made it back to Earth. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=19226030

Which leaves me to wonder - if Howard started working for Bold Futura in the Fall of 2009, would he still have been at SPAWAR when the Navy shot down USA-193 in 2008? (Though I doubt it will end up being relevant to this ARG of the film.)

Oh man, all of this military and war talk makes my head spin. I'm more into the human (and creature) drama. I'm glad that you guys can get your heads around it.

I didn't know that enemies fly spyplanes over our airspace all the time. Is that true? Wouldn't they be shot down or something?

And no real good matches to what Howard said in the latest message. 2013 and a few weeks ago - no Soviet satellite news that I could find, real or fictional. If we are meant to be researching this, Howard needs to show his evidence.

It's not all the time, I h ope I didn't make it seem that way. It's a few flights per year per country/state party, but they countries don't actually use all the opportunities they have. (And they're technically not enemies.) They don't get shot down because, as I said, they have to give advance notice, not to mention submit the plane they fly (and equipment) to inspection. I would also bet they have to specify their exact flight route.
