I'm in agreement with the few others who have posted this. I think Megan died a long time ago which is why he still sees and speaks of her like she's 13. I base this purely on this quote from FAPT/chat. This is just where we're going to get confirmation of that. I think Ms. S will look in the journal/ diary, get the answer for the birthday gift and then post something about how in denial Howard is because Megan has been gone for a long time. Ms. S has never spoken of Megan in the present really, just asked how people know about her.

OOOOoooo dang, that's goood.I've gone back and forth on the dead thing, but that is the first explanation to back the theory that makes sense that I've heard.

I was kind of surprised to see "Mom" responded to the mention of the bunker/Grandma's place, but the direct approach makes sense given our limited time frame. It does seem like they're trying to spread their responses out to different types of emails, but it seems like you're the only one who lead with anything about Grandma.

A particularly persistent migraine (and lack of replies to my email) means I've relegated myself to lurking today. I went with more of a "tread softly" approach, first asking about the silver & mentioning Megan, and in a 2nd email saying that I'd had to block some creep named Howard for harassing me about the silver. I sent both of those yesterday & haven't received any replies.

For anyone wondering about "Mom" actually replying further after the specific mention of FAPT - it makes sense because v37 brought it up in context & gave FAPT as the reason "Mom" might have been getting so many replies from people claiming to know Megan (as opposed to just throwing it out there in an info dump email).

I agree with kelwhite01, it seems like v37 has established the rapport we needed with "Mom," and will likely be our contact. I also agree with everyone saying that the secret 13th birthday gift is the next step, and that the composition book/journal is going to be the most likely source of that information.

Given "Mom's" worries about phishing & "clicking on some weird links and get(ting) hacked," I doubt she's going to click on FAPT/chat herself or pretend to be Megan. So it's a very good thing v37 specifically mentioned working together. Once she accepts the "proof," it might be prudent for v37 to respond by saying her hesitance to access FAPT is understandable, but that he could help by doing it for them, and then ask her if she feels comfortable either flipping through Megan's journal, or sending him scans of the relevant pages.

If "Mom" wants further proof:
    • I agree with what others have said about actually attaching an mp3 of Howard's VM.
    • Attaching pics of something with Howard's handwriting (pic of the LA dead drop note, & the Chi note - if there was one).
    • IDK if giving her the phone number of "Megan's" burner, maybe with the VM PW would help.
    • I'm also not sure of the utility of using Howard's phone # as proof, because even if she recognizes it, she might consider it to be info we could easily find elsewhere.



EDIT: Shout out to everyone who posted their attempts, both here and on Reddit, and to redditor /u/tinybonzai for doing such a great job cataloging emails & responses. It really helps to be able to see what's worked/what hasn't & to dissect out backstory so we can figure out the best way to interact with "Mom" and move this forward.

Even though Mom may not know what the secret gift turned out to be, she can definitely take pictures/scan the journal we know she has. She's more likely to cooperate with that request - this was a good suggestion!

unrelated: some people find 2-3 servings of tofu a week help decrease migraine recurrence.

I'm another camper who believes something happened to Megan when she was a teen (dead/murdered/kidnapped/ran away/missing). Howard seems to have frozen the image of her as a teenage girl in his mind (which would fit for the traumatic loss of a child), and as Cherry said, "Mom" hasn't mentioned Megan in the present at all - even when she should have:

I eat soy/tofu a few times a week already - it can actually be a trigger for some people, but isn't for me. Migraines aren't a new thing for me, but I count myself fortunate not to have them too often. I have myself on a migraine prevention regimen (riboflavin, omega-3's, magnesium) and avoid my triggers (I have to have my coffee though so I make sure I keep the intake consistent). I can't take feverfew and CoQ10 actually makes my migraines worse. Migraines are basically a once a month thing for me & if i do have a particularly bad one a small dose of Imitrex works pretty well. And luckily I don't have enough migraine days/month that I'd need other type of migraine prophylaxis (beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, etc.)

One inquiry (hanoai) was the girlfriend of a man, Howard Stambler, who claims actual ownership of the silver set. Proving ownership of an inherited antique can be tricky, and I can help you gather the needed documentation to prove ownership and the right to sell.

Hello all, thank you for the awesome, awesome reply suggestions and truth be told, most of your approaches were way more ingame than mine which I really liked! I had fallen asleep shortly after my last post and just woke up because it's raining so hard outside. Checked my email annnnnd A REPLY!

So the voice mail was the way forward, kudos to all who suggested it. It sounds like now we wait for Megan's Mom to make a move (and hopefully it won't be to drive down to Louisiana).
