[OT!] Google Ad in the ARGN Audio Repository The ARGN audio file repository for ILB has had this ad for MaxTheater, Inc. . This looks like a hoax because the price is too good to be true and there's no actual schematic of how the product is set up or how the technology is supposed to work.
Has anyone done any real investigation into the validity and quality of this product? $16.95 for a 175" res projecter...

If it works you would never be able to get a high def image....

it's not actually a 175" tv. It's a lens that magnifies the image from a tv or monitor up to 36". Technically that could be a valid price. But without a light, you need either a very dark room, or squint a lot.

MaxTheater is vaporware I ordered this product on October 23, 2004. I got an order confirmation by email, and... that's all. My order never arrived. I followed up with MaxTheater's customer support system but never got a response. I also tried email, and even the phone number listed on the credit card charge. Same result: no response. Yesterday (Nov. 11, 2004), I finally contacted my credit card to dispute the charge. Whether MaxTheater ever delivered any kits before, at present, I believe this product is pure vaporware .

In that case, whoever handles ARGN's ads should be notified of the invalidity of the company.

Submitted complaint to Google Adwords The ads are Google-based. I submitted a complaint to Google about that particular ad. Maybe, Google will pull the ad if enough people complain about it.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll filter out those ads and let Google know.

MaxTheater comes through after all . . . ? Today, a full 3 weeks after I ordered it, I got my order from MaxTheater.com. It was sent by US Mail, and postmarked on 11/10/04. I don't think it's a coincidence that I filed a charge dispute with my credit card that same day.
I know you're just dying to know what I got, so here's a picture of the contents. According to the plans on the CD, I only need one of these lenses per projector. If I want the text to be forward (not reversed), I have to put the TV on its back and add a mirror at a 45 degree angle. Stay tuned.

yeah, I've seen this kind of product before, long ago, even someone having it made with a tv in a box, a lens and a hole pretty much... ie, you can make it at home...

Well, I've removed MaxTheater from the ARGN banner rotation. I really apologize that this has caused problems.

Yep, it's a Fresnel lens. It will project a faint image on a wall, backwards.
TVs don't have enough luminosity for a projection. That's why projector bulbs cost upwards of $300.

Re: MaxTheater comes through after all . . . ? According to their own web site :
MaxTheater wrote:
We stand behind our product 100%. This means if you are unsatisfied for any reason whatsoever, simply send the TV kit back for a refund. Our refund period extends 15 days from the day you receive your product in the mail. This allows you to try your 175" bigscreen completely risk free for 15 days. Our refund policy is a no questions asked guarantee. This means you may return it for absolutely any reason.
In order to receive a refund, you must first contact us for a refund request form. We will not issue a refund if you send back your package back without a form. Additional 'membership' services are non-refundable. You must return the ENTIRE package contents to receive a refund, including: all lenses, all cds, and any promotional free extras.
I like how your 15-day period runs from when you receive their product, but you have to contact them for a "refund request form" first. Considering the company's stellar correspondence history so far, I'd request it -- nay, demand it -- right now if I were you.

Well, the cheapo version is up and running on a 13" TV. On a white wall, it's brighter than you would think. Of course, turning on the lights washes it out completely. However, the next step is to paint a giant screen reflective silver and see if the brightness comes up. Also, I have to get a couple of glass plates and a mirror. The Fresnel lens won't stay flat on its own, so I'll have to sandwich it between the glass plates. The mirror is to get the text reoriented left to right.
