Story question: One thing that I really loved about the story was its emphasis on what one article described as a Casablanca feel- peeking in on the lives of relatively ordinary people caught up in grander events. The point of view of the civilians rather than the generals; the people listening nervously to the news for the next world to be glassed, rather than the hero dropping from the sky to deliver payloads of whupass to Covenant booty, that sort of thing. Smile Was this more personal scale something that Bungie had originally requested, or was it conceived of independently by the writers?

Thanks in advance. Smile

Cats...

The day that she "died", the Sleeping Princess asked people to send her pictures of things... One person she asked for a picture of his cats...

So at some point in the day, we all started to email the LadyBee account with pictures of our cats...

And Pancakes...

And red balloons...

And pretty much anything else we felt like I guess... Razz

What were you thinking when the cats started rolling in? Did you notice? Was it planned? Aren't they all so cute?

Will we ever see Jersey and Durga again?

(No, I didn't check the thread. That's my question. If anyone else asked it, they stole it from me. Cool)

Is the Smary AI "Rampancy" that Durga is going through officially condoned by Bungie; will Cortana "go rampant" as she approaches her seven-year mark?

Hi, all.

Here's Elan Lee's response to my questions. He was kind enough to give me permission to post them here. I did make a little bit of snipping, to present only the substantive answers to the questions.

Story

I was curious whether you have any strong feelings about how the story
continues 'postgame'. We know that everyone learns about the arrival
of the Covenant almost simultaneously. Nobody is really worried about
Jan <cough>, but some people wonder what is likely to happen to Kamal
and (especially) Jersey, considering Durga's actions at the finale...

Do you have any strong opinions on that, or was it deliberately left
open-ended where we fill in scenarios like Kamal's cabin having
*really good* home security, or Durga turning Jersey's building into
the Chamber of Death? Also, if you weren't planning to do puzzles,
how were you _originally_ planning to intro Rani's story? More calls
from Melissa? flea++ ha><0r contest (kamen > !init transmit proc >>
gibson)?

Elan Lee wrote:

It's true that we intentionally left a lot of open ended story elements.
This lets us both leave room for the fans to jump in with their own ideas,
and allows us to pick up the story someday should we feel so inclined.
(There were about twelve earlier versions of that last statement all riddled
with legal jargon and intellectual property disclaimers. Please use your
imagination to conjure some of them up.)

Rani's story was supposed to just go out over the phones like everything
else. We actually had this crazy plan to keep introducing new characters
throughout the course of the game. Finally, Sean reminded me that every
time we introduced a new character it didn't mean that the old characters
went away. I just meant more writing. I told him I had faith in him. He
whimpered.

Sides:

I'd like to bring up the question of 'sides'. Some ARGs do this
deliberately. It seems clear now that you weren't really expecting it
to happen as sharply as it did halfway through ILB, and probably you
weren't expecting the degree of polarization from players that you
saw. I imagine part of it stemmed from the novelty of the live calls
for us at that point, and this was the point where you started to
diverge from 'plan'.

Now that you've lived through us trying to gnaw each other's kneecaps
off, what's your opinion on planning for 'sides' from the start for
future endeavors?

Elan Lee wrote:

As far as the "sides" go, we all kinda had different opinions on this. I
think that sides are a great community progression mechanism if the
community is strong enough to handle the rift. I could easily imagine
players leaving over the hostility or tense environment created over the
creation of sides. I could also imagine constructive debate, insightful
speculation, and fence straddelers. Ultimately, we decided that the goods
outweighed the bads and that the community was mature enough to handle it.

I think it's something I'll try to take advantage of in future projects, but
it's definitely a matter of timing. Introducing it too early (or too late)
could easily be disastrous.
