[RESEARCH] Roosevelt Island

In her last email to me, Sarah suggested we find out as much as we can about Roosevelt Island and why Gregory might go there. Hence this thread, a repository of trivia from which we can sift the wheat from the chaff.

Quote:
Roosevelt Island was formerly known as Blackwell Island. In 1832, the New York Lunatic Asylum was built there, a penitentiary (prison) for the criminally insane.

Not that this has any direct bearing on Gregory over one hundred and fifty years later, but a little context never hurt anyone.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

Roosevelt Island (aka Blackwell Island, Welfare Island) has a very gloomy history. Located on the island are the ruins of a lunatic asylum, two mad houses, a prison, and a hospital(used mainly for small pox). In the late 1800's and early 1900's it was just your typical lunatic and criminally insane infested island. Lately there has been alot of renovating and adding bridges and trams followed by some good ole fashion corruption.

Here is a good website on it's history:
http://nyc10044.com/timeln/timeline.html
and here is a pretty 1900's video (digitally remastered):

Of its current history, I doubt there is any relevance to The Investigation, but Roosevelt Island's past may have some bearing on Gregory. Gregory's multiple personalities may have come from his visits to RI. Spirits of occupants from the asylums, penitentiary, or even the hospital could have found themselves in Gregory. This could explain Hunting and it could also explain Hiding.
If we are supposed to believe in divination, are ghostly possessions that far of a stretch? Something to theorize on...

[SPEC] IIRC - Isn't Roosevelt Island the island mentioned in...hmm...*checking book name*...Patient 47 or something along those lines by the same guy who wrote Mystery River?

(Sorry about the messy post, but I'm in school right now and don't remember the book more than a passing memory of having read Roosevelt Island somewhere. I'll check it up when I get home)[/img]

I think the book is called Shutter Island. Absolutely my favorite book of his! Couldn't stop reading once I started and finished it in a day.
