ugh bad bad colour for a background... make it dark or make it grey or white... bad UI design having brighter background than foreground (windows)...

as for the sounds, I always pictured the long wind up and down sounds as opening and closing windows, and the short being the program open and close sounds. I always hated sounds for every minimize and maximize, but I'd put the chatter on and off beeps as the maximize and minimize if I had to have them.

That's three 'sizes' of sounds - long wind up/down, short wind up/down, on/off chatter beep... good for windows enter/exit, program start/end, window max/min respectively...

That's my desktop image. If you want to go all-out, I could post my ILB boot-screen that I'm using right now for BootXP, I think it is.

EDIT: Oh, and if this is the one used, not that I'm getting egotistical here thinking that it's the best one around, no, never, I might change it to say The Hive, now that The Hive is the name for it.

I made a special collage-ish wallpaper in commendation of the PMs. I showed it to a lot of them in the post-moderated general PM chat; Jane and Alex Irvine really seemed to like it. Jane called it "perfect as is" - that made me happy.

I'm making her a Dana Awbrey tribute wallpaper, too. I hope she likes it.
