Mysterious hand-eye sigil discovered across many videogames
Have you seen it in any that you've played?

So there appears to be an ARG type thing happening for a bunch of indie games with groundwork going back to at least October 2014. It's unknown exactly what the connection is yet other than that they all contain the same eye-hand sigil somewhere, leading a hidden puzzle starting at the sigil and ending at a circle glyph image made up of symbols arranged in what appears to be concentric circles. Speculation's running rampant, but any information people are able to put together would help immensely.

Games found with it so far:

  • Kingdom of Loathing: Found on this image of a weird door. Adventure dates back to October 2014, making it the oldest spotting so far (and, as KoL is a browser-only game, debunks this being explicitly Steam/Valve related). KoL thread

(no glyph so far, puzzle unsolved)

  • Crypt of the Necrodancer: Found in the file directory for the game as 'eye.jpg' . File dates to May 2015 and results to this glyph puzzle piece through hex editing and finding another image embedded in it.

  • Mini Metro: Finding the eye-hand in the credits leads to a secret map puzzle (more details). Dates back to at least May 2015. When solved, results in another glyph piece.

  • The Magic Circle: Found on a door, and figuring out how to get above the room with the door leads to the glyph below. Dates back to at least September 2015.

    or

  • Legend of Dungeon: Clicking on a dwarf in the Options menu pops up a (very faded) version of the eyehand. More datamining leads to another glyph piece. Unknown creation date.

(actual solution image would be nice)

  • Neon Struct: The hand-eye is on the shirts of some of (if not all of) the 'Stranger' characters in the game and apparently have been since the game was released in May 2015. Circle glyph has been datamined out, methods of obtaining are unknown.

This is all what's been put together in the day or two that someone finally put together the connection between the image in Mini Metro and Crypt of the Necrodancer, so everything's really brand-new to this. Next solving step is to probably scour more games for any additional instances of the eye-hand image that haven't been discovered yet, but given that it entails any game released or updated from at least October 2014 this might be a bit of a staggering step to take!

The glyph puzzle piece in The Magic Circle was just found by digging through some old discussion threads

edit: can also be viewed from the opposite side

The Magic Circle symbol and puzzle piece were as far as I can tell added in a game update on July 7th 2015.

New discovery: The 'Strangers' in Neon Struct have the handeye symbol as a logo on their shirts and have had it there since the game was released in May 2015 (as seen in this user guide)

edit: and just as quickly, the circle glyph has been datamined out: http://imgur.com/WuQdfun

I saw it being asked for in the Discord, so here's a textdump of information we know for sure:

  • The only concrete connection is that every game has the hand-eye sigil in it somewhere, ranging from easy to find (Neon Struct) to hidden but clear when spotted.
  • This sigil is used as a signpost marking where to start looking for the circle glyph piece that you're rewarded with for solving the puzzle.
  • All games found so far seem to be smaller indie games, but connections between developers are likely to just be standard 'indie devs know each other' connections.
  • As Kingdom of Loathing is involved, it's highly unlikely that this is Steam or Valve related. Sigils have also been found in GoG and other non-steam versions of the games, adding to the unlikelihood.
  • The earliest instance of the sigil we've found so far was in Kingdom of Loathing, dating back to October 2014. The other instances of the sigil found so far seem to cluster around May 2015, but this is a vague correlation and may not hold.
  • It's very likely that all the sigils to find have been around for months because of the above, so therefore things released or updated recently are unlikely to be related (as the only recent development is someone finally putting two and two together about the sigils.)

An update/hint from the Kingdom of Loathing guys on their Podcast 02/21/2016, around 23 minutes in. Loosely paraphrased:

Quote:
Zack: "Conspiracy Island was in 2014. Dinsey Landfill was less work than Conspiracy Island because it didn't have the structure that Conspiracy Island did, we didn't have to hide an ARG in it. I do want to say, because people are really really barking up the wrong tree, the thing is not nearly as difficult to solve as you think it is. The other games in the arg, almost all of them were data-mined because they were Steam games, and we had the advantage of having a web game so we have DRM that makes you actually solve the puzzle. The people who are trying to solve the puzzle are just looking too far afield. Everything that you need existed-- er, came into existence-- the day that Conspiracy Island rolled out."

Kevin: "And that's actually really important to think about, in that context."

Zack: "It is."

Will keep poking around there.

EDIT: also edited together all 8 known pieces here: http://i.imgur.com/nNgIiTM.png Still some gaps but it's coming together.

The puzzle reminds me of alien crop circles like this one.

I have never heard of any of these games, but it sounds pretty cool that someone hid all of this in them, and that the creators have said that they are an actual ARG! You can't get any more clear than that!
