Hello dear fans (and adversaries) of Junko Junsui!

If the spectacle of today's relentless outrage and the increasingly fluid nature of facts seem strangely familiar to you...

Well, you're not alone. Wink

Back in 2007 when we first began conceiving and planning Junko Junsui, it was largely out of fascination with the propaganda and psychological warfare techniques of Vladimir Putin's regime.

So yes, we admit that we purposely broke all the "rules" of alternate reality games whenever possible, especially by the outing of our characters' most vocal critics (within parameters we thought reasonable — ways that would cause more psychological shock than actual harm).

Mind you, we weren't doing these things just because we were misanthropes or sadists. Rather, we did it because we were concerned by certain dystopian trends manifesting themselves in the online world — in particular, the fluidity of facts versus fiction, or the groupthink nature of memes and their effects upon mass movements. This is why we created a chaotically competitive, sometimes even nihilistic, game rather than emulate the cooperative "pool" model of previous ARGs.

Although we were fascinated by the propaganda practices of people like Putin's deputy, Vladislav Surkov (even basing a main villain character on him), we never dreamed that his principles would be put into practice so soon right here in the United States. Like many of you, I am utterly dismayed by the cycle of outrage and fictions being promoted right now (here in IRL) by the mentally ill person who sits in the White House.

But instead of retreating into isolation with fantasy games and other distractions, I hope that some of you will actually feel inspired by the recent turn of events. I hope that seeing such unprecedented transgressions against factual truth, our democratic institutions, and just common decency encourages you to do things you never did before. Please, if you disagree with what is going on, go out there and make yourself heard — whether that means joining protests, running for office, or even just making art.

Indeed, the way I have personally coped with these unfortunate circumstances is to conceive of a new large creative project — not an ARG per se, but something just as subversive and crazy as Junko Junsui attempted to be many years ago.

In closing, thank you for playing our game (even if your efforts focused on trying to derail or criticize it)! We learned invaluable things from everyone's engagement. And thank you to the community and admins here at Unfiction Forums who provided a venue for a large portion of our English speaking audience.

 		hell this could be lq bait that I am biting on hard, but whatever. If you had actually done any research into copyshifting and other related topics, you would have followed the basic "shock, catch, & normalize" formula that all campaigns have. I highly doubt you know or understand anything about surkov or the tactics he uses outside of what a few mainstream sources report about him.

I don't mean to rant about politics, but if you are going to claim something about your arg with little to no research, well, at least try. You might be able to convince/impress people with limited knowledge but you don't fool people who do it as a job. I kinda feel like a dick for calling this out, but when you engage in this type of work for a living, it gets on your nerves. Surkov is small game compared to even some of the smaller risk management and reduction firms that are out there. If you want to understand a bit on how this works, I suggest you look up the old KPMG incident from 07. This is the "get shit on your enemy half." The other half of this is "get your other enemies to start attacking your enemy with the shit you find on them" (KPMG Bermuda tax evasion). (ik ik ik, not the greatest example as they were technically after ipoc but w/e).

 		I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit sad to see the Junsui facebook page change names, as it was a little reminder of a time when paranoia was more fun.

I wish you the absolute best in your new endeavor. Thanks for the memories; hopefully your new project will bring even more our way.

Sorry Moonman, but nothing you say contradicts the fact that Surkov is the creator of propaganda theory and party ideology of Russia United. And his ideas are pretty damn fascinating.

Not sure where all the negativity comes from, but our research went a little beyond reading the NYTimes. We had some pretty credible experts in intelligence, risk analysis, and Russian culture on deck throughout.

That being said, a lot of the subject matter we included had to do with FANTASY, SCIENCE FICTION, and various other UNTRUTHS. We weren't delivering a thesis paper at SAIS. That wouldn't be very fun as an interactive experience, after all. Razz
