Does it actually display picture or is it crap? How big does it get without being awful? Still wouldn't buy it for my life, but...

It displays a picture that looks like crap. I'm going to use glass plates to flatten the lens and get a better picture, I hope. End result should look reasonably good. Remember, big screen TV's don't have any more pixels than a 13" TV; they just have bigger pixels. I'm just magnifying those same pixels from my 13".

I think I'll build that one from Tom's Hardware. It doesn't look too hard. If I can only talk my wife into letting me hang it from the ceiling.

that's why I like tom's hardware version that enlarges a computer lcd screen... I think it's much more worth it doing a computer screen because the resolution is much larger, basically high definition... play dvd's on your computer screen instead, watch high definition video, play games... that's where the big benefit of this thing is (if there's any benefit at all Razz)

Man, for all that work, just go buy a projector: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/proj?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&~ck=bt

The $900 Dell works excellent, the next step up even better.

i would not mind trying to make it myself (have the projector lying around anyway), but if I do this, I will want to hook consoles up to it.

Because:
Dell 2200MP Projector: $899
Lumens Brilliant 1,200 ANSI lumens (max)
Resolution Native SVGA (800 x 600)
Bulb cost $200+

Dell 2300MP Projector: $1499
Lumens Brilliant 2,300 ANSI Lumens
Resolution Native XGA (1024 x 768)
Bulb cost $300+

Tom's Hardware Kludge Projector ~$300:
Lumens 3500 ANSI Lumens
Resolution Native XGA (1024 x 768)
Bulb cost $30+

Of course, size is a big issue.

Yah, size, asthetics, converters from whatever video source you're using to VGA, and for my clumsy self, the LARGE likelyhood that I would destroy many LCD screens in the process.

Very cool for the do-it-yourself type not worried about what that beast is going to look like in your media room though.

I have no doubt that if you had the proper tools and modest woodworking skillz, you could create a nice, if basic, case for the THG projector project. It'd still be pretty big though, depending on the size of the projector. It's possible to get newer, smaller, quieter ones than the what you are probably familiar with from school, but they cost more (of course). It's still a cool project and probably better bang for the buck than just buying a commerical projector, assuming you don't mind big and/or ugly.

i bought a panasonic projector that supported native High Def and ended up spending under 2000 for the entire set up including a 106 inch 16:9 screen. Ive been playing halo 2 on it the whole time, and its awesome!
