Worth a second listen

I've been listening to the audio files again, and I highly recommend it.

Looking back now, knowing how things end, brings new light to some of the audio that we saw earlier. Some of the hints early on about durga/SP, about the Spartain training, about the Flea.

And very entertaining as well.

It IS a time commitment, being over 6 hours, but well worth it.

yep, all very good.

The only outstanding audio that confusses the hell outta me is one of the ambient ILB wavs that played off the site.
With the demonic I love bees, and noices and bees in the BKGD.

If you reverse the file, about halfway through it, you clearly hear a voice say Connection, and the rest is drowned out by the chatter. I soo wanted to know what else was said....

My wife used to freak out when I was just browsing and the sounds would come up! Laughing

While they won't all fit on my mp3 player, I'm planning on loading it up with the audio files, and burning the rest to audio cds for the Thanksgiving car trip next week. Really looking forward to it too.

They could only fit the audio files on a dvd...

Something that didn't really hit me so much on re-listen, but perhaps shortly before it, was that huge thread we had about the value of A.I. existence versus human life.

I was always in the camp of placing a pretty high value upon Melissa's/Durga's/Sleeping Princess' 'life,' but there were lots of people that felt that that entity was easily expendable next to Dana's life. I wonder how that might've changed for people upon a re-listen, knowing what they know now? Knowing how very real Melissa was, in spite of 'just' being a machine?

How could they listen to her pleading with Kamal, or recapping her adventures in 2004, without feeling as though there was something more there than just 1s and 0s? It sorta boggles the mind.

Well I've got the mp3 versions someone posted a while back via bittorrent. I can cramp 256mb of it onto my player, the rest will go to CD which I think is manageable. I've got a 5 hour trip each way, so that should work out just about perfect. I hate long car trips, audio books and radio dramas and such are the only thing that help me stay awake.

You know what's interesting, is that while writing the Creepy fiction, it seems to naturally levitiate towards Dana as a human; it's like all the chat we had through the game got imprinted in my mind, and it's coming out in the fiction... Smile almost like it's setting up for the big conflict of giving Dana away...

But I agree abut the worth a second listen... and shameless plus reading through my work on novelizing the axon transcripts for Creepy, really it could all be worth a third official listening/reading... I'm making it like reading a book, literally, so it's harder to read and follow the audio, but the reading in a sense adds a lot in the imagination realm by reading instead of by hearing sound effects... it's almost (almost) more 'full' than listening to the audio and reading transcripts, just reading it all like a novel. But of course, nothing could ever beat the amazing audio - like holy cow, the voice acting, intensity, clarity, drama... it'll take a lot to beat that.

Aye, MP3 CD's rock

I have 175 of the greatest rock songs ever recorded IMO on 1 disc, I play it on my MP3 compatible car sterio set on random... it's like my own personaly XM station, commercial free, and it will never play a song I don't like. and if I don't want to hear a song, I hit a button. on the remote that I cross-mounted on my steering wheel.

the theme of family

I'm going through my second listen right now (well, not RIGHT now), its really interesting how one of the strongest and most obvious themes is 'family'.

The Morelli's: spouses succumb to temptation in the face of long distances, Durga as a surogate mother figure for Jersey

The James': Jan and JJ of course, but also Jan being introduced to her mother for the first time, and then having to deal with her father's death with her

The Zaman's: a family seperated over great distances, a mother trying to extend her family by finding a wife for her son, Kamal coming to terms with the loss and 'return' of his sister

Rani's family i get a little muddled with, but there's her cousin getting married, her father trying to protect his family

Dana: nothing got her to come home EXCEPT for her Aunt being threatened

Indeed, and the whole little Family that we built with Melissa.
Durga's strong family-attachment feelings for her crew (team jersey) in 2552...
The whole "I take care of my people" routine.
The family of strangers this game has built each and every beekeeper into.
The family the Voice Actors became.

It is the most ruling theme

Not particularly surprising that it would be emphasized, considering that community-building is one of the things that 42's website advertises. Having a story which emphasizes ties and loyalty puts people in the right mindset.

And tie that with the parallels between the bees community and the "team" that the characters form. Different people in different locations that come together for a common purpose. Families both.

Every time I hear durga get... forceful... I still get chills. "I am not your THING." <shudder> So powerful. And then again, after Kamal comes over to Jersey's.

I downloaded the CD version that someone had made available via bittorrent after the game closed. It had MP3's that must have come from the DVD as they are of a higher sound quality than the downloaded clips from the site. I keep them on my ipod.

My only problem is that I still think that they are out of order in places. I'm going to play with the order a bit more; maybe verify that they are in the same order as the humptydumpty page.

[edit]
I need to document this while I listen, but It really seems like they aren't quite in order on the 404 page. For instance, In chapter 10.1 Jan gets mad about not being able to enlist and smashes something, and Jersey said "I just got finished buying a new lamp - could you people stop breaking things..." But Kamal doesn't show up to break the lamp until 10.2.

Is the order on the DVD the same as the Humptydumpty page?

One of the most chilling parts comes in the week 6 files.
Kamal says, "On sale for a limited time only. Offer expires December 31, 2004."
And then there's this little sound like 4 bells ringing in succession.
Creeeeeepy.

if you're looking for a linear order for the axon scenes in the chapters, take a look at the Axon Plot in my sig - all the clips read linearly and did my best to make it flow the best it could from start to end, splitting threads by scene if necessary...
