If you follow through the Opera Chess game on the grid and take note of the letters that the pieces are leaving from you get....

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
BETWEEN ATHENS AND CAIRO O(KT)ITAREXHEWT

I don't know what the gook at the end is, but I double checked my work and still got the same.

is this helpful

It seems the Morphy is famous for his brilliant openings and that the opera game is one of the most famous games that illustrate his brilliance. So maybe only the first moves matter??

also the two cities that Varin found are in many states... still going with my Ohio connection, I know they are both there as well.

along with New York and Alabama. The two Alabama cities are only 13 miles away from each other. The two New York cities are only 12.5 miles from each other.

OK I ran through Varin's work and she's spot-on - the (KT) of course is because two pieces move for castling (rook + king) and she showed both there.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Now what this sorta looks like (though Google led me nowhere) is "Between Athens and Cairo Otita [or Okita, or Oktita] Rex He. Wt." which makes me think they want the height and weight of some king or mountain or some other thing the Romans named with Rex or somesuch...

I just came by the forum - someone tell me where the answer is supposed to be entered if anywhere to see if it's right? Smile

We don't have a place to enter the answer yet, but supposedly it will be revealed on Monday. Keep an eye on http:///www.moretosee.com
