Yes, and until then you might want to refer to her as Ms. Rutherford. Wink

Forgive me for being a bit ignorant on the correct usage of titles, especially in regard to women. I have a sincere question, in an effort to shed some of my ignorance.

Always happy to help.

Quote:
Since I know she is married, but am unsure wether Rutherford is her maiden name or married name, would it be inappropriate to use Mrs. in conjunction with Rutherford were it to be her maiden name?

[Miss Manners mode]

Yes. Mrs. is used only with a woman's married name. When you are not sure, or in business situations (female lawyers, for example, are usually referred to in all correspondence as "Ms.") you should use Ms.

[/Miss Manners mode]

Understandable.

"Miss" implies that you know that a woman is unmarried, however, it is also a correct term of address when speaking to a woman whose name you don't know and of whose marital status you are unsure. For example, "Excuse me, Miss," is an acceptable way to get a waitress' attention.

"Ma'am" can be used politely as a term of verbal address to any woman as well, although I can testify that as a reasonably young woman, it does weird me out slightly. In general I stick with "Miss" for women that look as if they're under 30, and "Ma'am" for women who appear to be older. But if in doubt, "Ma'am" is the one to go with.

"Mrs." is used for married women. Even some married women prefer Ms., especially in business settings because they feel, as do I, that a woman's marital status should have no relevance in the workplace. "Mr." does not reveal whether a man is married, and neither should the corresponding feminine term.

In addition, the term "Mrs." originally comes from a possessive form of Mister's or Master's, thereby implying that "Mrs. Smith" is "Mr. Smith's woman." Whether the term Mrs. can ever escape that legacy of subordination of identity is debatable, so...

when in doubt use "Ms."

When you say 'Ms.', how exactly does that sound?

More accurately, how do you pronounce 'Ms.'...

On a side note, does anyone know where I can download old episodes of Red vs. Blue? They only have the newer ones, and a couple of the earlier ones online anymore...

Dasro_Kast, you can find earlier episodes at www.archive.org. You can either search for "red vs blue" which gets most of them (including Episode 0 - 4 at least, and some of the PSAs) or search through their moving images machinima collection at http://www.archive.org/movies/collection.php?collection=machinima.

I just wanted to add that I've been having a BLAST with my fellow beekeepers thus far... except when we get interrupted by New Kids on the Block.

I also pray that the first content update doesn't allow Nova to shoot swords out of a rocket launcher.

I've been meaning to ask... It's not that I don't like being a SPDR Ninja but does anyone know of a Washington (west coast, not D.C.) or Pacific Northwest Beekeepers clan?

My efforts at searching have come up empty.

Of course down here in the south, usage is more pervasive. I'll use ma'am for just about every woman in existence, regardless of age, marital status, vocation, (or in the case of one friend who I can't stop from answering me with yes'm" gender razifrazin. . . grumble)

It's slipping away though. In the more urban parts of the south I haunt (OK, grew up in Tampa and schooled in Atlanta, neither really 'south'), ma'am is almost assumed to be sarcastic or ironic. I had to spend a long time working to make it sound genuine since I like using it so.

As for Wall-Marts, well, I just don't shop there because they creep me out. After the Gap, it is the fastest store to just make me physically uncomfortable and dispossessed-feeling. Maybe it's because I'm only there after midnight when everything else is closed, but they always seem to be full of bizzare wall-martians wandering about dead eyed and aimless. creeepy. (huh, first use for me)

Is it possible to use vehicles for this type of stuff? Like put a banshee there, so people could use it as a stair?

Heck yeah. EVERYTHING is fair game...

I hear dasro is a pretty good pilot on asscention... Wink

Heck yeah, who else do you know that can accurately use a banshee as an elevator lift? Wink . Of course, knowing me, I'll get bored and take people out. Do I hear Banshee bowling? Heh. And thanks a bunch for the link Gestas...I've been wanting to catch up on the RVB goodness for a while.

/miz/

Ack, forum doesn't like IPA. But close enough.

As opposed to /mis/ -- "Miss."

"Z" sound at the end.

I'm surprised that it sounds funny to you -- it's commonly used on TV and in movies.

Got my headset

Good grief. I finally got an Xbox headset. Now, I can listen to all that sparkling conversation I've been missing.

"Dude, you're gay"
"No, you're gay"
"Well, you're a douche"
"You're a douche"
. . .

I swear I liked it better when I couldn't hear them. Please, tell me it improves.
