Curious Question What I'm wondering from some of the old-timers here is:
Does game material often overlap between adventures, or is there a certain "material" that PMs tend to stick with (i.e. mythology/esoteric)?
The reason I ask this is that I find (and maybe it's just my inability to multi-task efficiently...lol) that there are many refs that seem to overlap from Capture the Flagmonkey to other adventures presently in play.
Or is this possibly someone who isn't running a full-fledged ARG, but maybe a mini-adventure making use of where people's heads are at right now?
I don't know what the "dynamics" are....is it a wait-and-see approach. Any hypotheses? Or enlightenment from someone more experienced?
Some interseting refs:
munin talking of The Red and The Blue - CTW groups
Ref to Titania - Queen of the Faeries - CTW Faeries
Ewan's ref. to Klepsydra - Dale's stint in Klepsydra
Ewan has 'Dale' carved into his door
Ewan's ref. to "Cecilia"
Munin's note spelling out tetradrachms - CTW coin
Munin's note ending with Try Again - Virtuquest/Tyra Nagi? (A stretch I know)
hugh_inn and munin - JMX
These ones are niggling at me the most:
Ewan's friend Heph passing him a coded note in Klepsydra, with a link to CTW Interaction forums .
Titania posting in the forums ....and not in a "usual" way.
The Sharing Patrol Fan, Friday, Dr. Morrice stuff ...seemed we had the right angle but there was something in Friday's "Yeah I bet they did" when I mentioned that someone had said to contact her for more information.
I read that sometimes a "mole" is employed. What is the purpose of this? To get people riled, or to promote gameplay? Or neither? Maybe to have them question where the line between game and reality lies?
Who do you think Titania is? A mole? Do the unwritten rules of ARG demand that characters not ever be part of the OutOfGame stuff?
I haven't been at this long enough to understand some of the dynamics and am hoping someone can shed some light.

Yeah I did hear from others that there were lot of refs to other earlier ARGs as well, but since I wasn't around for those games I didn't want to attempt to list them, lest I get something wrong.
Thanks imbri...it does help to know I'm not imagining this...lol

random babbling See, I think it would'e been a stroke of brilliance to have CTW, CTFish, and LLL all somehow interwoven, since they look like they're completely independent in construction.
So, for one game to reference another, to be structurally intertwined (intentionally) with another and apparently separate game - in my mind - would be a thing devoutly to be wished. Except that it's really being used as a cheap advertisement for someone's personal project, playing on the positive memories that gamers have for days gone by.
Like a current musician saying that their new album has unreleased tracks by Nirvana or the Beatles, and they get folks' attention due to association. Except, in the ARG world, there's no copyright and - truthfully - deception is the whole point.
Interesting paradox, now that I write it down: I'm put off by PMs trying to deceive me, but think that the whole hallmark of a good game is the immersion and uncertainty as to whether it's really a game or not. Heh.

Well, not having been around for the early games, I don't have the same fond memories. Example...to me the_pythia is a new character, I have no memory of a prior Pythia. Is this a disadvantage....maybe...because I am a little more naive when it comes to differentiating (possibly tongue-in-cheek?) refs to charcters/events/styles of bygone games.
I enjoy the CTFM puzzles....but was starting to feel a little like all games were imploding in on one another in my brain. Hence feeling like it was better to ask if I was imagining this and what others thoughts were on it.
Also...the refs to the Unfiction Boards were disturbing because they went against everything I've been taught here by you guys. So here I am trying to figure out/reconcile what means what.
And maybe it would be okay to create something that "strings" all else together....it's got me wondering that's for sure. Again I wasn't around for "Celia/Cecilia?" (sorry can't recall which it was). But I read the interview with her. So does that sort of thing go on often...? Are we experiencing something similar with Titania/CTW? Or is it just a player having fun?
I dunno...lol...

Ah well then I don't feel so lonely.... Thanks imbri.
What about the other question regarding links given in-game to out of game resources? Like the link given in CTFM to the CTW interaction forum? I'm interested to hear opinions on it....
I guess technically it's not the same game (AFAIK) so it's not like CTFM has given a link to CTFM threads....so could someone in a game be playing another game...
Ackkk, now you know why I was getting confused. This along with the other stuff I posted have been swirling around and around in my head...lol

I noticed in chat one day that you mentioned the posts on this board by "pythia". I can tell you that those were written by the owner of thepythia.net
Guilty.
Sorry for any confusion.

Exocog was the Minority Report game that was actually a game, right?
Anywho, most of the similarities can be traced back to PMs drawing from the same roots. I know that Mythosphere in CTW was discovered when the Mythos stage in JMX was still going on. That was about when I became completely confused between the two. That being said, there are a disturbing amount of references in Capture the Flagmonkey. Maybe it's an ARG spoof? The "Airplane!" of ARGs, if you will.

No reason we can't have multiple spoofs, is there?

You're lucky, I can only spoof once and then I fall asleep.

Personally, I tihnk it would a brillaint stroke if PM who were behind more than one game managed to interweave their particular worlds into one straight continuity (i.e. - the ChangeAgents: Out Of Control, and Chasing The Wish).
Imagine my good buddy Brad Dunn trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
Of course, maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to write some more irritating e-mails to Brad. Everyone's got to have a hobby.
As far as CTFM goes. I'm personally of two minds. While they are taking alot of other people's work, they seem to be doing it in a very interesting and entertaining way. Of course, I'm looking at it from someone who has done very little svae to lurk since coming in at about the halfway point in Lockjaw, so the vets here might have a different take.
