Well, since there's some bored people here, I'll post a simple question here, on this topic.

I have a friend signing up Live next week, and he's looking for a wired router. Since it's not wireless, is it important to buy a router from the compatibility list at www.xbox.com ? I would think that any regular router would work! Now wireless is a different story. Is that true?

I just use 2 nics on my PC, so I know nothing about routers ...

In theory:
The Xbox runs on a standard IP (Internet Protocol) network. This would suggest that it should function with any standard IP based device. So any wired or wireless router should (and does) work.

The problem comes when routers start blocking or getting in the way of ports that the xbox uses. Now most routers should not do this, but some may. Of course in most cases you should be able to get it working with any router, you may need a little bit of technical know-how or help to do it.

The wireless routers may not work as well with the (overpriced) xbox wireless adapter. I don't know, I've never used it. If you were to buy two wireless products (AP/Router and a "Media Converter") that you knew worked together and plugged the xbox into the Media Converter you will be fine.

So yeah the short version is yes, it will work.

If he's purchasing a router, he might as well get a live compatable one anyway. I don't think there's any significant added cost.

I got a very reasonably priced wireless, live enabled router and have had no problems whatsoever. I'm not using the wireless adapter for my xbox, though, just for the comp downstairs. I didn't know there might be problems with the wireless xbox.

Now, Phaedra is not using a wireless, but her router is not on either of the lists. When we first tried to get it set up, we ran into some frustrating connection and downloading problems. They're gone now, but I'd hazard a guess that if she tried to host a game, problems would start popping up again.

Unlike the boarding of tanks. I was riding around on the back of someone's Scorpion for a good long while punching merrily away at the grille on the back - I think grenades might have been more effective if I'd had any Smile

Uh, yeah nova... that would have been me that you were pounding the snot out of lol - was funny as hell though driving around running over people and there you are... just punching away happily hitching a ride lol Ah the lovely bumper cars......

when I first saw someone doing that, I thought a dead body had somehow gotten stuck to the tank. Then it jumped off and kiled me!

it's just painful when someone comes along and starts whacking you on the arse, and right between the legs too...

Confused

EDIT: haha ok, I did not get the '2ndary' meaning when I posted that line... gestas, thanks for the note Smile, it's reworded... but it's hard finding a sentence that can't be taken...a certain way... and still express the original pain Confused Laughing

Well, the problems is that the list has mostly wireless routers and only a couple of regular ones.

But I think we found a good price for a d-link that's on the list and I believe he's going to get this one.

Thanks! Smile

Umm, thebruce - you might want to edit that sentence. It, has some...
rather strange connotations that may have been unintended Laughing

Heh - it gave me pause I must admit... I guess that just says more about my permanently corrupted state-of-mind than anything else Confused Smile

Completely off-topic:
BTW, thebruce - I added my email address to your mailing list on the creepy site... I think. I may have added it twice (last night, when I wasn't sure it if went through, and today). If it didn't get through, I just wanted to point out that for some reason the Chapter1 links to Dana's pictures of the site before it became corrupted just return a "403 Forbidden" - but everything else I went click-happy on worked just great! Smile

Yes, they're linking directly to blogspot's copies of the images... I may need to copy them to my site for completion's sake... I'll look at it for the next update

(and yes, got both your requests Wink)

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Last night was ok, but I was at a friend's apartment, not expecting to be online (which is why I had to send messages to krystyn via smoke signal), but I got some time to myself so I plugged the Xbox into the router and hopped on. The lag was too bad, though, so I got booted. Sad
