[Halo 2] Plasma Sword Technology

OK, I'm really geeking out here, but what technology does the Plasma sword have that allows it's user to lunge? Clearly it's not a normal ability of either Spartans or Elites, otherwise we could melee lunge. it could be that the plasma itself carries you a certain distance while you're holding on to the handle. Am I looking too much into this?

A. you are geeking out about it.

B. your in the right place! Very Happy

C. if we look at the plasma pistol charged shot, it is able to track a target, maybe there is some thing about the plasma that is attracted to your target some how.

I think it is a natural ability of Spartans and Elites, but for design reasons, Bungie only allows them to do it when they have the sword. It's the same reason that dual-wielding wasn't introduced until Halo 2, even though MC had two hands in Halo.

It seems like a pretty unatural natural ability to me, if it was a simple lunge i would agree with you, but as the sword lunge allows you to change directions in mid air and move extreamly fast in that direction, i would have to say that it is more a feature of the sword than the weilder.

Hmmm... well, I still think it's just design reasons. But it is entirely possible that it's a feature of the sword. After all, the Covenant are able to use magnetic fields to shape and direct plasma energy. (as described in the books) All of their weapons, from the main cannons on their ships, to the tiny plasma pistol are based on this technology. And presumably, this is how they're able to shape the plasma into the form of a sword in the first place, so it's conceivable that the sword would use magnetic energy to propel itself forward.

agreed, im sure its for a design reason. their sick and twisted idea of a "balanceing" it out with the other weapons. but in the story side of it I would think that its a feature of the sword, like you said some sort of magnetic "thingy" and yes i use that in the strictest of scientific definitions.

Technically, you can lunge melee with other weapons. Try it out. You can be a good few feet from somebody and melee them, and you'll rush forward that few feet to get the crack. So in a way the Plasma Sword only has a longer lunge range.

yup, tis true. Whenever i'm being all ninjaish and about to conk someone from behind on the head, I can do it before I'm up on them (no jokes por favor), and I do a mini-lunge.

Actually it is not the plasma sword it is "the energy sword".

You can tell there is meant to be a difference. The plasma looks kinda fuzzy (it's superheated matter) and the energy sword it all electrical (not matter).

That's our answer!

It's aerodynamic!

Heh! I suppose the entire sword wouldn't be much heavier than the handle.

btw. IcyMidnight, you saying that the game refers to an energy sword and a plasma sword? That would explain things, as I know the books refer to shaped plasma.

I dont think there is a Plasma sword, the Covenant can 'manipulate' plasma with their magnetic coils etc. They can guide the plasma charges on certain trajectories.

I do not believe they can form it into solid-state forms though, like the sword.

well, obviously they can, I mean, it's in the game, so there has to be a way they do it Wink
