I think if we want to play around with handicaps, that we play a game first, and then have everyone set handicaps off that... they can be adjusted after each game if they get too severe, etc.

I'm afraid this might overcomplicate things! Who's gonna use handicap? At what settings? These kind of things.

Angelo. Maximum. 24/7.

Seriously, though, I never would want anyone to use the handicap unless it was just me and them playing, and one of us was obviously way outmatched. Then it would be added challenge to the more skilled player, which I think makes things more fun.

And really, I've learned so much from all the skilled players I've been against, both Beekeeper and non. I've found that:
~The sword is a whore weapon, and that if one person uses nothing but it for the entire match, I wind up respecting the guy who came in second a lot more for it.
~Warthog running is a great way to win CTF and Assault, especially when I'm driving someone good at planting/stealing.
~Running straight at somebody with twice as many guns as you is a bad idea.
~Sniping from somewhere where your back is wide open for pummeling isn't safe.
~Throwing a grenade is a tactical decision, more so than a diversion or mainstay. If a person is mowing me down with two guns, I bounce a grenade off my ankle before dying in the hopes of nailing him in the process. If it's a one gun vs one gun situation, it comes down to who's shooting first. If I take the time to throw my grenade, I won't put as many rounds into my foe as he will me. If I can sticky him, though, it winds up not mattering. ^_^
~Shotgun beats SMG like scissors beats paper. And yet I can't quit trying to win a faceoff with a shotgunner.

I've gotten better because you all kill me so much, and are so good. I watch and observe you without even thinking about it, and I even start to imitate your gameplay in really subtle ways. Team games really help in this respect, because the impetus is there to help each other already, so it's even easier/more advantageous to tell someone how to improve their game, because it helps the whole team. It's one of my favorite things about capture the flag, really.

Wow, I can definitely vouch for the idea of hiding as a skill. There have been several points where I've stolen an enemy flag and then spent more time hiding with it inside their base than it eventually takes to return it. Not being in places that people would think you would in at a certain time greatly works to your advantage. There's a really great spot in Lockout for OddBall or TeamBall where you can hide in plain sight just above everyone's head, and they'll circle the area three to four times before the wise up and look up; by then you can make a safe judge of when to get out while they're confused.

But those are things that you can only learn by playing against other people. You have to figure out where people go, where they typically look, and use the places that they don't to your advantage, even if only for one or a few seconds.

That's how they do it for golf and bowling. We play a time-based free-for-all slayer. Maybe, more than one game. Then, we assign handicaps based on the number of kills. 0 kills is no handicap, 20+(?) kills gets a 'severe' handicap. There's only 4 settings (none, mild, moderate, severe), so we should be able to break up the handicaps evenly. We could reassign handicaps as often as we wanted, to compensate for people getting better.

I believe the term is "sandbagging", and it's considered bad form, to say the least.

You know I wouldn't do that, right? Besides, it would be just a sad coincidence! Laughing

angelo, you with that sword, I swear ...

I don't know how you got in that one corner, and how I managed to stand in front of you so long. I was so confused. And then you kept jumping on my head, instead of just killing me with the frikkin' sword, already, and then someone else was laughing at your antics so much that I remembered to melee your foot, killing you instantly.

I took the sword back for a few moments, and it was so lovely. I also liked sniping you at close range just as you were going to lunge for the umpteenth time with that hated, dreaful sword.

I have a love/hate relationship with angelo that sword.

I think it was the night we tried spartan stacking that someone found that even a slightly askew melee on the foot of a spartan standing on top of you would kill them instantly.

It was speculated to be a bug, or a weakness of melee. I mean, someone's foot?

I now speculate that insta-foot-kill is divine retribution for the bastards who dance upon your head.

Hey, hiding is an extremely useful skill in an oddball game. Now we know who to turn to Smile

edit: I've found a couple of wonderful spots on Ascension to hide with the oddball, one completely by accident. You end up way below the map in a place you can't get out of, but nobody will think to look for you there either. I'm still not sure if it's a glitch or planned that way.

I heard about this in the original Halo. It was supposibly fixed with the first patch in PC Halo. I'm surprised that it's not fixed in Halo 2, unless it's part of the core engine...I was about to geek out, had to stop myself.

Chappy, Waters, INCyr, and me. The new Team Unstoppable Smile

That was what, 5 of 6 team skirmishes won? Grand fun.

We also experienced our first Xbox Live netsplit... bizarre. The game took forever to load, and when it did I was in a game with chappy and waters, and nobody else on either team. It ended instantly telling us that we won. Meanwhile INCyr ended up in a separate game facing all 4 of the other team. He wisely enacted a tactical retreat from the game Smile Should be interesting to see the stats on that one...
