why the heck is gmail so popular? aside from being free email... it's like a huge fad, this whole gmail invite thing... aside from having a free email address with lots of space, is there any other bonus benefit for using gmail?

I've got loads of emails, a bunch with rogers, a couple with hotmail, and a couple at work... is the possibility of gmail as well for me just redundant? or is there something unique about it?

Yes. Nifty features. It organizes your mail into conversations (almost like threads), allows to you to stick labels on them for easier sorting, has an archive where you can dump things you don't want in your inbox without deleting them or relegating them to some folder, lets you google your email, and has a very easy-on-the-eyes, intuitive look.

And it gives you context sensitive Google Ads, for that personal touch. Smile

  • Huge storage: 1GB that you may never use up
  • Huge send/receive limits: 10GB at a time
  • The low-down dirty truth: Elitism. You can't get one just by registering; you have to get an invitation.

What they said!

For those lazy bastards like me, that never clean up inboxes, the most attractive feature is the huge 1gb space!

And no, I didn't get any invite to distribute since I signed up! Everybody I talked to always get new invites available, so I guess I'm the exception!

Oops - sorry LouMac - didn't know there was a thread for it already Smile

Water10 - I think the invites are on a random basis. My brother got an account at the same time as me, and doesn't have any invites, and I got invites after twice the time it took my other brother to get them...

It seems like nobody is taking up the offers though - a few months ago, people were desparate for Gmail, but it looks like there are so many invites around now, that whoever wants one, has one Wink

(Hmm, I do love run-on sentences Smile)

bah gmail! I use SMTP with POP mail, so I technically have as much room as my hard drive space, I've never legitimately filled up any of my server-side inbox (takes days, even getting 100's of 100's of spam per day) and not being web-based makes reading, scanning, sifting and filtering multiple times faster. I organize all my incoming emails into their respective folders (I use Eudora and check 5 emails simultaneously consistently with it, each profile filtering to its own inbox, then specific trusted emails like mailing lists and penpals filtered into their own folders, then known spam content filtered into...well... oblivion basically Razz)

so ya, I like eudora's features (many of which I still haven't used) and it's free with one little ad/sponsor box in the bottom left, which is unintrusive at my 1600x1200 resolution Smile. NAV auto-scans all the incoming email and deletes/quaranteens any virus or malware that's attached, and I never open attachments anyway unless I know what it is (nothing happens automatically except the display of straight text/html emails in the preview window, so no malicious scripting).

I don't think I've ever used up a gig in email... even when the trash box has thousands upon thousands of emails anywhere from 1k to 50k in size, plus attachments... actually my physical attachments folder takes up more space than all the emails I have saved including the trash bin (after weeks or months of not emptying)...

Basically, it'll take a very quality free email service to make me switch from SMTP Smile

I have hotmail because it's my passport for MSN Razz

Hey Phaedra,

I already pmed you about it, but I figured posting here wouldn't be a bad idea either. I still have yet to receive my DVD, and I just want to make sure everything is all set. Hopefully I didn't screw up when I sent my address.... I don't think I did though, so maybe you haven't been able to send mine yet? Either way, it would be awesome if you could just post what's up! Thanks!

Wow....I'm fifth in the second drawing? *goes berserk before collapsing on couch* Thanks a lot!!

And gmail isn't a fad, but, well, an original idea. "Why dont we give them 1GB...500x more than hotmail gave?" That 1 GB was its drawing point and, being in the beta, drew me in as well. I enjoy gmail more than I thought I would've...

Plus sign... glorious plus sign...

Thanks!

She is still here, don't worry Smile

I hear she has been uber-busy recently (she just did her LSATs), and she is on post 776. That means, since next post is 777, she is holding off to make an extra-special post (as well all know that 777 is a very significant number for both Halo2 and Haunted Apiary) Smile

So, (though I don't want to presume to speak for her!), she's still on top of the lottery... I don't think we have to send out search parties just yet Laughing

Got my DVD. Thanks a million, Phaedra. Loved the note, too - whoever said flattery gets you nowhere was a big fat liar. Hope to work with you again.
