[META/PRESS] My ILB radio package - suggestions please!

I just put together a two-and-a-half-minute package on ILB for the campus radio station at ASU, incorporating audio I got from the SF training meetup (Pants, aliendial, pita, Cameron Payne), the crew WAVs, and the ARGN phone conference (Yuri).

Thing is, my supervisor at the station just told me the package can actually be up to five minutes in length, since it's an extended feature. I was trying to cut corners to get it down to a minute and a half :-/ So needless to say, with a topic like ILB that needs so much explanation, I should probably use all the time I've got to explain what the heck went on. I didn't even mention the ASU bee!

So here's a clip of my "finished" package. Helpful comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated; I'd like to turn it in on Monday but I'm not sure if it will air til next semester anyway. Either way, I had an awesome experience with bees this fall, and I'd like to make this the best report on the subject out there. Please, please, please tell me if I missed or misstated anything, or if there's something crucial that you want me to include. (Hey, since I'm one of "us", I won't make anyone sound crazy like the Post or... well, everybody else did too. Damn the established media *shakes fist*)

Listen to the Bee Report!

I just finished listening to that and boy, am I impressed! Very professional sounding and well organized.

I don't know if there's any good recorded quotes on this to flesh it out, but if you want to add more time you might consider mentioning some of the training exercizes, like the code relays and the system that grew up to support them.

I wanted to add stuff on that and how the game progressed and such, but honestly I want it to stay relevant to an audience that has no idea what the heck is going on. (Hence the half-joking quotes at the end.) So I'm trying to solve the unsolvable problem - how to explain Bees to an audience that doesn't have any idea what it is?

Thanks, btw Smile

Sounds excellent. I've listened to it a few times and really can't think of anything else you could add.

Tough to fully explain this game in such a short amount of time, but you definitely get the high points across pretty well...

sounds good Smile a couple thing i've thought of:
1) more on how the game was found, through the trailer and honey that was sent out.
2) tell people how to find out more about ARGs (possibly direct them to argn.com??)

Add some of the actual sound clips. You have time to add a particulalry harrowing one, or part of it.

You could talk about the end game, with the meetups and stuff.

Sounds wonderful! I can't think of anything else to say about it, and it works perfectly!

You could maybe add something along the lines of a very quick story overview.

Your first bit followed by
"One of the coolest things about the player's story is that it was affected and took twists in response to actions taken by the players. {Maybe include the phone chat bit about that here}
The story that is unlocked by the players takes place 400 {I forget...} years in the future as we see the lives of a number {you could put the exact number, I'm too lazy to count} of people come together and become entwined. Relations are built, tragedies happen, and events unfold into a truly compelling and emotional story."

You could do something like that, but better like the rest of the piece.

Good Luck!

Let us hear what you finally decide to do.

The wind up/wind down isn't explained. It's fantastic for us, who are used to listening to sound files with those at the beginning and end, but the uninitiated would probably just be confused, or ignore it.

Fantastic apart from that, though.

One other thing that you could do would be to add in the conflict between Mel and the SP, by changing the SP's quote to "Crewmember, what's my favorite vegtible?!" "Oh, I -KNOW-!", or whatever the making-fun-of-Mel quote was. Also, end it with a collage of the characters saying "They're here...", or the longer ending of Jersey with the revelations about the Flea, what they did, etc. Just trying to add a bit of length to it.

I would add a bit more about the audio being and additional back story to the Halo universe. as well as writen by Sean Stewert, award winning author. Might help people to figure out why they would want to listen to it. Also i have found it helpfull to compare the audio to The War of The Worlds broadcast, people seem to understand what im talking about then.

If one of your goals is to get other people interested, I would play a few more audio clips from the drama portion in a kind of movie-trailer style so that people's interest is piqued.

G3K, that is great. Unlike Baelfael, I do not think you need to explain the wind up/wind down. My feeling is that it doesn't even register on those unfamiliar with ILB. Radio pieces often use sound that is meaningful to some, but not to everyone. I think it is clever and you should leave it alone.

I had a person who is not a beekeeper listen to your piece and asked him for suggestions. He said pretty much what Ralen said, that adding something from the actual radio drama would be good. Something compelling that can stand alone. I leave the selection of the excerpt up to you. Smile

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. Smile

I tried it, and there is absolutely no way to describe the trailer thing without confusing everyone and saying "www" and "dot com" too many times. I mean, I'm sure I could phrase it radically differently, but I doubt that many people care about the rabbit-holes anyway.

If I'd been prescient/coherent enough to actually get vpisteve on tape, I could have slipped in a real nice plug for ARGN, but as it is I'll probably add something about the name of the forums. This will go hand in hand with briefly mentioning The Beast and how this phenomenon really got started. Thus I could also work something in about the honey there too...

I vaguely mentioned the meetups, which is where I got the (wo)man-on-the-street clips that I incorporated throughout the story. And I think I mentioned something about people being able to play Halo 2 early, too. I'll try to make that clearer.

I'm trying not to be sycophantic Wink The dynamic nature of the story is indeed something that I should mention, though. I'll try to incorporate that.

With the parallel storylines, it's real hard to even briefly summarize the story. I guess it's all in the wording. Hmm...

OMG I found this banner ad the other day. It was one of those moments of true internet brilliance.

Anyway, I'm not sure I ever listened to the last week's audio files because I was so caught up in getting to SF and back :-/ I feel like a horrible person. I'll check those out and see if they work as summaries.

Yeah, I didn't do a very good job of connecting the Halo story to the story within the audio clips. And that's an awesome idea to compare it to War of the Worlds. I'll probably put that in there Smile

I agree. It was my little way of framing the story, I guess... if I use audio clips within the story, maybe I can wind-up wind-down between clips? That might be unwieldy. Meh.

Sounds good. Expanding on astute_falcon said, anyone have suggestions on what clips I could use? What clips would be representative of the story as a whole, since the storylines don't converge until very near the end?

Also, does anyone have any idea whether Elan, Sean & co. are going to release any of the unreleased live call audio? pita, I could have sworn there was stuff in the NYT article that I didn't hear on any of the WAVs. If anyone's got access to that, I'd be interested from a personal standpoint, if not a journalistic one. I've always wanted to hear a recording of our sole live call, and also the infamous Mallory call Wink
