OK, for the new Japanese text:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Kono shashin wa, nani ga chigau desu ka?
What's wrong with this picture?

About the ROTted text I think it refers to Korben Dallas, from The fifth element. He says he only speaks two languages, English and Bad English

Just for reference (not to knock the PM or anything), the Japanese I've seen so far is largely grammatically incorrect. It gets the point across, but if there's been some confusion in the translation it's because it is used in a slightly incorrect fashion.

kangaeremasu (which I can only assume is meant to be kangaeraremasu): would mean "I am able to think" (rareru = potential form, reru does not exist in japanese), or it could just be kangaemasu, which is "I think"

Matte means "wait" and is a command, matteiru or matteru would be "i am waiting"

Shinpai shinai de does mean "don't worry" and is also a command

Kono shashin wa, nani ga chigau desu ka? does pretty much mean "What is wrong with this picture?" but it is also slightly grammatically incorrect

I don't know if this helps any, but I'll be glad to help translate any more Japanese that comes our way.

Made it to the box

Okay... though I haven't progressed on our French/Japanese pages, I did make some progress elsewhere.

If you go back to the Praise be to Idunn page, he has updated the source code comments.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
<!--jmoqvo--> the Essential Arts from the Sainted Hermit Zhuang Zi <!--mvlo--> and then ascended to Heaven.

This Rot-18s to be "beging" "endg" indicating that the necessary text we should be searching for is above.

Searching on three key words from the above I found the next answer that our PM was looking for. I recommend doing some searching on your own to find the answer, but if you get frustrated, the answer you can put in the doorway is this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Zhang Jiao

Which will take you to

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://daemon.chaoseed.com/thebox.htm

Some hidden things on the site:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Title of: tooeichxuntae oewmbypdee

With a form called "6by4.php"

Put the two together and we get:

tooeic
hxunta
e oewm
bypdee

read up-down, left-right:

thebox youopeneditwecame

Then submitting takes us to another countdown.

estimated time until this page vanishes: 16593

Another movie quote

Not really a spoiler, but a quick description of the movie quote from above.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Hellraiser.

KIRSTY : Where the hell did you come from?
The Cenobite gestures. The box is lying on the bed.
CENOBITE : The box... you opened it. We came.
KIRSTY : It's just a puzzle box.
CENOBITE : It's a means to summon us - it's called the Lament Configuration.
KIRSTY : Who are you?
CENOBITE : Cenobites. Explorers in the further regions of experience. Demons to some. Angels to others.

Sort of fits in with the other password. Not sure if there's anything else to pick up from it.

Well, about 10000 s for everybody to try talking to vis, then.

You forgot to check the SC on merci.htm, though:

As for what's wrong with chasser0.png, I'm tempted to note the spelling of chaser.

Thanks vid for checking the SC. Must've been a bit hasty on wanting to post my find. Smile

As for the misspelling of "chasser0" I'm not sure that's it either. Chasser in French means "to hunt" so I don't see any problem with that.

Oh well. Looking forward to the possibility of a new page soon.

hey. i just started playing this a couple days ago, but i'm caught up to speed now, thanks to quite a bit of help from this forum. i was just wondering if someone could explain the whole ASCII thing to me, since i really have no idea how it works. alternately, if you could give me a website that explains it, that would also be fine. hopefully i can be of some help later on!

i don't think this has come up yet... sorry if it's trout. the black scorpion/black magic page has a link to some random page about some palce called the Joshua Tree National Park (anyone else smell a U2 reference?). if you go to the Nat'l Park page and click the Dangerous animal hunting link, guess what you get? a big 'ol close-up of a black scorpion. i'm not sure if that means anything, because as vis said he "hasn't had time to spruce it up yet", but i thought you should know.

Ah, yes, ASCII. See, your keyboard is lying to you somewhat. It has to talk to a CPU that thinks in ones and zeroes. These ones and zeroes become numbers, of course, which then become the letters and numbers you see before you. So, you're not typing "a", you're typing 01100001, which becomes 97 (or, as we notate it for our purposes, 097). For a quick, handy chart of all the cute numbers to peruse, go to http://www.asciitable.com, and note a couple of things:
1. Before you get to the letters, there are special characters that occur. Space, for example, is 032.
2. The main set of characters starts at 0 and ends at 127. (Computers always start counting at zero.)
3. There's a second set that ends at 255. It includes a lot of French wackiness, which, as far as vis is concerned, is fair game.

Now, from there, understand that rotation is often in play for the ascii numbers as well as the letters. This can become nasty *fast*, as you find yourself having to decode spaces and apostrophies as well as capital and small letters. The best help, assuming it's just rotation, is to find the most common character, and, unlike normal substitution, treat it as a space. (Usually, substitution cyphers are broken by finding "e"; in ASCII situations, however, spaces are characters, and they *always* show up if there's more than one word.)

The good news: We have common numbers that show up.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The following are numbers commonly added to ascii numbers, and subtracting them could lead to an answer:
8 (vis' number) - space=40
128 - space=160
42 (I'm guilty of bringing this one to bear) - space=74

Hopefully, all that helps somewhat.

The weird hunting dog picture

So, I found the hunting dog picture, by googling "hunting dog".

That said, anyone figure out what's wrong with it yet? All I can tell is that the dog is pointing its leg backwards, as if it's peeing. But I dislike dogs and can't read them very well, so perhaps I'm mistaken.

Hmm... as for the bad english comment- I hear a stereotypical mexican accent there, sounding like "mane- second eees no' good enough"

I laughed. But that's all.

if you

tqjmzibmlnzwuipqllmvemjamzdmz
using ROT-18, you get "liberated from a hidden web server"
AND
jbekpmksbpmeibmzxiom
using ROT-18, you get "btw check the water page"

you also get some info about logging in at the bottom. i assume "check the water page" refers to the element0 page, which i have yet to do.

Well, Jan Termin disappeared again; entering Zhang Jiao now takes you to http://daemon.chaoseed.com/yturbans.htm

(note: it does not take you to templars Laughing )

Anyway, the page sets down some important tasks that must be completed before the onset of winter (including pizza sorting and Ginger Gold shipments Laughing ). There's a login box below, filled with our DaemonWorks login.

Also, there's some hidden text:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
tqjmzibmlnzwuipqllmvemjamzdmz
ROT-18: liberatedfromahiddenwebserver

jbekpmksbpmeibmzxiom
ROT-18: btwcheckthewaterpage

Far be it from me not to humor a person.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Back to http://daemon.chaoseed.com/lg8.htm, then, and we view source to find:

lqlgwcuqaabpmzivlwukpwqkminbmzbpmnzmvkpsmgewzl
ROT-18: didyoumisstherandomchoiceafterthefrenchkeyword

If he means the persimmon, we almost did. But, I think he means something else.

lqlgwcvwbbpqvswnaquqtizwvma
ROT-18: didyounotthinkofsimilarones

Tried hunting already, and it's on the list as a new redirect to lune (Lune has a new bit of hidden text, by the way, that ROT's to "thisisnotadoorbutaturn".)

And, now, some ASCII.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
147 152 144 153 100 074 141 146 143
141 149 074 158 146 143 074 158 147
158 150 143 074 153 144 074 158 146
143 074 153 154 143 074 087 152 074
142 153 153 156 074 144 153 156 074
158 146 143 074 154 147 141 158 159
156 143 081 157 074 163 143 139 156

Subtract 42 from each, and you get:
105 110 102 111 058 032 099 104 101
099 107 032 116 104 101 032 116 105
116 108 101 032 111 102 032 116 104
101 032 111 112 101 032 045 110 032
100 111 111 114 032 102 111 114 032
116 104 101 032 112 105 099 116 117
114 101 039 115 032 121 101 097 114

Translation: info: check the title of the ope -n door for the picture's year

...actually, I think we already saw the last bit, but I'll post it just in case.
