10/10 show review (if you care about more than just puzzles)

Cap'n Hook sez: "AVAST, YE PIXIE LANDLUBBERS, THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD!"

---------------------------------------------

Well, it has become somewhat obvious that they're now frantically cramming as much content into each show as possible so as to speed up the storyline before the guillotine falls on 10/24. The seams between scenes are showing a little bit more now, as storylines which would have had the leisure to stretch out over 13 episodes now have to be compressed into six. The show no longer flows in that languid, Lynchian way....now it seems like more of a footrace, and that's too bad from a dramatic "beat" sense. Confused

All in all, this is not an unpardonable sin given the network scheduling strictures that Liveplanet is now forced to deal with, but this episode DID look like it was edited with a meat cleaver in certain spots. There was not one, but THREE compressed "the story-so-far" type summary recaps even before the first 15 minutes were up, as if they were desperately begging the audience to remember what it had seen to date. Also, Dawn's relationship with Sloman (is he a sting-ee, or is she working both sides of the fence as a double agent?), which I think may not have otherwise been rolled out until the character arc's second act (somewhere around Ep 6), was crammed clumsily in just after a commercial break.

Other "secrets" which I thought might have been rolled out a bit later in the season, had the series been able to hold on a little longer:

1) Martha's apparent complicity with Sloman.

2) The revelation of the incest between Sloman and Mary (although, I gotta say, Sloman muttering "Daddy wants some" was a dead giveaway to me, but then again I've seen CHINATOWN one time too many).

3) The mysterious "symbol" competitor as Jim's potential savior and Watermark's antagonist.

4) The whole scene with Grace and Dave in the bar seemed oddly rushed and awkwardly pieced together, and not in a "hip," "stylistic" way, either.

5) Shadrach's installation of the Bible sculpture.

6) Jim and Mary's tender little moment on the porch of Martha's house.

7) Jim's flashback to the events leading up to his father's apparent death...my guess is that that little dream sequence wasn't originally slotted to be rolled out before Ep 7 at the earliest.

Did anyone else see anything which literally screamed "last-minute scene insert to allow us to fulfill our contractual obligations vis a vis doling out contest clues"?

Oh, and is it just me, or is anyone else beginning to get a SERIOUS headache from all the bleached-out, hyper-grainy film stock and overlighting? Yes, it's a desert, it's hot, heat can kill a man in four hours, okay, we got it. That's no reason to light everyone so unflatteringly that all the women look like they have smallpox and all the men look like they have no noses, though!

On the plus side: mmmmm, lotsa gratuitous Dawnie action. She's a tough cookie, that one. Wink

Dunno, Oz-

Unless they had two versions of the episode in the can, the producers couldn't have edited together a new version in 24 hours. Typically, an episode is locked to picture 5-7 days in advance of the air date, in order for post production to happen.

Anything's possible though, I guess.

Well, I'm guessing that Liveplanet had more than just 24-hours notice that the axe was going to fall. Just because ABC Media finally got around to ANNOUNCING it to the press today, doesn't mean that they hadn't made a decision about the show's fate a week ago or longer. And they might have communicated that decision, on the Q.T., to the show's producers, while officially maintaining a position of "we haven't made a decision yet" to the press and the petition hounds and the other inquiring minds.

I suspect that Affleck has known since at least LAST Friday, when the disappointing Thursday fast nationals came in, that ABC had the show in its target crosshairs, and acted appropriately. It doesn't take much for a twitchy sort like your typical network programmer to make a decision to pull a trigger on a dying show.

And I would also imagine that most of the raw footage for ALL 13 eps has been in the can for a while, so it's ALL about post-production by this point, which can easily be done in 24 hrs. or less.

Ozy,

I rather liked the picked-up pace of the show...

The rapid action seems to stimulate the brain faster
and more frequently.

BTW, I respect your intelligence and the intelligence of all
of the posters in here.

You are so bright and write so well that it's almost intimidating...

But I'm telling you right now, that if this is all you and the gang here
at unforum know... you're not going to get the brass ring.

Unless the gang here isn't putting out everything they know...
Or even hinting at it, because you all don't want to tip your hands...
and give away the farm, maybe... ?

But there are people out there who are at this moment seven leagues...
and a lightyear ahead of... the info in here.

And, I'm not trying to be a wiseacre or negative in any way...
But you might want to decide how you like your words prepared...
Because I think you might end up eating a few of them.

Don't be annoyed or angry with me. Embarassed
I'm honestly trying to help.

Besides you know what they say about the truth, don't you?
You can't run away from it...
because it's always there right in front of you!

Also, where's Mischa in all this?

I believe there's some "math" to be done in this thing...
plus some other related items and from what I've observed previously,
I think Mischa would be just the person for the job.

Just my .02 and worth everything you gave me for it!

Thanks for giving me the floor here for a moment or two.

ngajengai--

Thanks for the kind words. I can't speak for anyone else here, but I'm the first to admit that I'm not much of a puzzle-solver, myself. I kinda follow along on a more of a story- and meta-level. So no, I'm not holding anything back as far as my (admittedly shallow) understanding of the puzzles. I'm all about subtext anyway.

For all I know, there could be a million little subgroups out there, playing just underneath the deceptively calm and placid surface of our little community. If there are, I haven't been invited to any of the parties, nor would I really have that much time to get that deep into it; so no, I can fairly confidently say that I'm not really playing "for the money", at least not seriously.

As for "Mischa", not sure who you mean. I don't know anyone named "Mischa"? But I'm lousy with the names/faces thing, so: um.

Very Happy

O

Hey, Oz...

'Had to go back and check. It's Misha326... not "Mischa."
'HOPE that's the right poster from ARGN. Excruciatingly smart.

‘Should've ck-ed on the name before I posted, but I must have read...
something like... God, I don't know... 50,000 posts????!!!!!!
So many that it's hard to dig back through them.

I've generated over 1000 pgs of wp docs just collecting...
what I consider to be the important or meaningful info...
and all the wonderful, insightful and funny things people say!

There's 6+ docs and nearly 700 pgs in the one I use the most.
It's so long it's to the point where it makes my computer misbehave! Rolling Eyes

Anyway, those posts account for the names of a lot of posters...
Not all of whose names I can remember right off the top of my head...
And... wow... I guess this is way off topic...
But what I'm trying to say is that I cut a little corner hoping to save time
for research and trying to save the brain space...
for the details from Push!

I love the things you write, Ozy. You and catherwood...
and some of the other posters crack me up!
And you often blow me away with the stuff you know.
You remind me of one of my favorite writers: Thomas Harris.
He's magnificent and seems to know a lot of good stuff about everything!

As for "Wouldn't You Like to Know" 's request that I tell what I know?
If you go to the Netscape Push Dialectic and go back through those posts,
you can see some of my ideas. I post there as ngajengai...
Because I am who I am and the same person everywhere.

It's just time-consuming and a little tedious to duplicate what I write...
in more than one place.
Besides, I'd feel the need to kind of customize it to the particular group...
where I'm posting. And I'd rather put the time into the hunt!

Don't take my most recent post over there as an example.
I was just clowning around with one of the goofy characters over there.

Okay. That's it for now.

I promise. Laughing

I have to put in my $.02... if nobody minds.

I've not been here that long, but I love it here. The posts are intelligent, creative, well-thought out and researched. I've checked other boards and can honestly say that, overall, I can't stick it with them out because of all the (sometimes) really dumb things that are said. Sometimes they can be so easy to shoot down the thought process that's it not even worth the time trying to correct them.

Anyway, with that being said, I don't have a ton of time to research and collect every bit of data I come across. I just like being a part of a community where I know there's a good possiblity that someone here could win the dough. Yeah, i'd love the cash, but know I'll never get it cuz this is a second full-time job! I just like to fiddle with the thought process and watch how things are deducted.

Anywho, thanks for letting me pick yer brains and listen in on your genius thoughts. You guys are awsome. And I KNOW there is way more that you know than you're letting onto. Surprise me, please, surprise me!!!
