Correct me if I'm wrong but stegged images are actually the image files, and since this is a physical object, I doubt it. That may just be the product of scanning it in.

you're right, steg is a file hidden in another file. those are just harmless pictures of the postcard(s), which have been in no way modified officialy per-say.

but i do agree, the 2210 looks odd when zoomed in.

Perhaps there are multiple levels of conversion? Judging from what the PM said in the newspaper article, perhaps it will be more complicated than one conversion - so who knows what mathematical stuff we'll have to do?*

*I don't, cos I'm rubbish at maths Confused

Forgive my ignorance, but I jsut wanted to confirm something. Since binary/base is the use of 2 different numbers, just as base 3 is three (0, 1, 2), does base 64 work like this?

Capitalized and uncapitalized letters (52 values), the digits 1-0 (10 values), and then - and =?

Just wondering Smile

could the number already be in base 9 perhaps - its maybe a little odd that there are no 9's in it

can' help feeling that there's something of interest here too:

http://members.shaw.ca/hdhcubes/index.htm or more specifically:
http://members.shaw.ca/hdhcubes/boyer-16.htm
as it contains 2251 (the firbox product ID) 2210, 2215, 3215

If only I had a clue what it was on about! Smile

playing around with the digits and noticed that none of the two pairs are greater than sixty so (though the odd are quite long on this) could they be indicating time? exp. 01:22 02:15 03:45 etc.

also reordered the pairs in low to high and high to low order, which I'll go ahead and post in case someone sees something:
00 15 15 22 32 45 46 48 48 48 50 51
51 50 48 48 48 46 45 32 22 15 15 00

and, since I have nothing better to do, grouped in threes:
221 545 484 848 465 100 503 215

Magnifying the number 2210 shows irregular pixels.
Is it possible that it's stegged?

It is difficult to tell without a higher resolution scan, but it is entirely possible that the irregular pixels might be something similar to the Xerox PARC DataGlyph, which really is not too different from a 2D barcode.

In general, yes. The specifics are a bit different, though. A..Z, a..z, 0..9, plus and slash. There is a certain amount of compression/expansion involved (every 24 bits of input get expanded to 32 bits of ASCII) and the equal signs are just padding if/when needed. If you are really interested in the nitty gritty details, it is part of the MIME RFC.

Has anyone considered 221545484848465100503215 using a solitaire cypher? Description here:
http://www.schneier.com/solitaire.html
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the process, maybe someone else is more familiar with it.
I arrived at it because of the email from dinahSPLATprojectsyzygy.com said it all begins with AADAA, which is apparently from the Cryptonomicon book by Neal Stephenson, which features a description of the solitaire cypher. Probably nothing but it might jog someone else's mind.

Just another thought

For what it's worth...
Here's the string of numbers grouped in threes from the Dewey Decimal Classification System .

221 545 484 848 465 100 503 215

221 Old Testament
545 Quantitative analysis
484 Not assigned or no longer used
848 French miscellaneous writings
465 Spanish grammar
100 Philosophy & psychology
503 Dictionaries & encyclopedias
215 Science & religion

Not that it does any good. It's just that the thought nagged me as I was about to get some sleep...you know how that goes. Rolling Eyes Smile

talking about things being stegged, couldn't his actual message be stegged. He says that he cannot reveal any new information becuase it is not safe, but if the message was encrypted/stegged then it would be a bit more safer.

He he. The number crunchin' stuff you lot are doing is kewl.... think that yes, the number underneath the semacode is important as is everything else on the postcard....the little details wouldn't have been on it just for show.

Ill help out as and when I can, I couldn't do so since I had a bloddy hard assembly code program to write....well hard for me since I started learning assembly at uni about 5-6 weeks ago.

i might have missed it in the thread so far, but here is another point:
what about the vertical line of text, stating

"Despite hightened security Academy tours are still running twice daily from gatehouse twelve. Advanced booking essential."

Up until now, we only knew of gatehouse 24 - now there is gatehouse 12. maybe we can try to access some log files of gatehouse 12 by ... ummm ... i dunno .... Rolling Eyes

well, my point is: is that text on that card just for kicks?
