Who is watching who Question

Interesting little observance here for those of a conspiratorial nature:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
24/04/2004 "...tried to contact G.F.A.O. again. Just a holding page at present.."
28/04/2004 "Interesting link sent to me from a friend...."

www.GoldenFuturesAndOptions.com is known as a redirect to Sable&Shuck, that was until earlier this month when WolfLord did this: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8238 and we all realised there was an earlier incarnation of the same site. This wasn't known until that date and currently ?everybody? knows it. So why now are we being given clues towards this again......a link to archive.org immediately after GFAO reference.

Are the PM's developing this 'experience' as they go along and are using us to provide our own red herrings which are then used ingame?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
BTW: none of the other ingame sites are caught on archive.org (with the exception of some confusing information on www.pathwaytravel.com, maybe someone more knowledgeable could check it out?)

I just feel we're being purposefully led by our own off tangent findings to some degree. But maybe thats how ARG games go?? (excuse the inexperience but first time being involved to this depth in an ARG)

Your thoughts??

Always (and getting more so Confused )

Jonathan Harker is an illustrator in London- Poor guy, I wonder how long it is until he stops getting "are you in trouble?" calls? Smile

I know the game is partly written as we go along- if nothing else, Jon makes a mention of my website in september in the Cache! edit: but no, Jon never did email me about it They must be playing along, as it were. Thing is, what is in that diary that we didn't know or weren't sure about? Does it have the password for the upstairs room? There are mentions of a lot of films- 9th gate being one that could be important, it has a McGuffin that is similar to the Book of Star.

there are loads of (false?) clues - here's some things that may mean something but have no idea what

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

7/4 the Ninth Gate - original book called the Dumas Club - googled this and there is site called Babelguides selling it but don't think this is in-game

15/4 - who is Charlie Fort? -

23/4 - could the girl he bumped into have been Brigid? why does he quote "How does it feel?"

24/4 - Ben hur - 1959 ... the 1959 calendar was the same as this year's

28/4 - as Cryptic celt said - why is Jon keen to retrieve archived web pages or get past company firewalls

10/5 - is the Witchfest site in-game? the events take place in England, Ireland, Scotland Wales and Belgium!

9/9 - Who is the man "Case" and what services did he offer?

16/9 - who is marrec?

3/10 - "Question: How you acquire a book that may no longer exist?"

5/10 - "?" - is he repeating the above Question again because he seems to give an "answer" twice :-

10/10 - "There is no way I can find the book"

14/10 - "To repeat: There is no way I can find the book" .... are these 4 entries related somehow ie some sort of code eg 351014

his answer "There is no way I can find the book" seems significant

I am probably way off the mark on the above - this game gets you reading something into everything

No, I don't think you are. I don't even have time to read through the site yet, but there are obviously some riddles in there.

This is very much an ARG-ish thing to do. That's what makes it so great!

I have to finish writing my term paper, so I can't work on anything until wednesday, but we need to get cracking on this new stuff! I am 99% sure we are missing some information here.

All of Jon's links may not be IG, but he still could be referring to them as clues (to those who are new to ARGs, this has been done in past games). Here are a couple of things that stuck out to me on the two cache pages I read:

- "Churchill's black dog returns" ...shuck?
- No mention of Bridg in his happy family
- "How does it feel?" ...possible reference to the Chemical Brother's song?
- New Order Day (is this something you folks on the other side of the Atlantic celebrate, or a hint...I know, I am an uncultured American Razz )
- "Don't have nightmares Jon"
- His link to the archive machine
- "password in exchange for chocolate" ...maybe a clue for the Mezz door?
- What was "last year's incident"
- Why are some words in italicized red?
- The picture in "The Cache" title bar is of his kitchen from the Mezz

- "To repeat: There is no way I can find the book"

...sounds like when I was a child and we'd play hide-and-seek. My younger sister would say, "[Older Sister] is definitely not hiding in the closet." There was no surer sign of where my older sister would be found.

Oh, one other thing...I don't think we need to spoiler anything about the cache in this thread unless it really is a solve. If the [PUZZLE] tag is on the title of the thread, you can assume there will be puzzle-related posts Wink

Something that seems important to me... on 04/04/2004 Jon writes about the BBC article which he has linked. Within this article it says "Family names, pets and football teams were all used by those questioned to provide inspiration for a password."
Then in the next journal entry Jon writes that he's been to watch football at the pub and he writes "Bugger" suggesting his team lost. From the linked report on the match, we know that Arsenal lost that game... so we can assume Jon is an Arsenal supporter.
Is this linked to the fact that people use football teams as inspiration for a password???? Is ARSENAL a password somewhere?

I think, not game related, but there actually is a New Order Day in the "Star Wars" Setting:
New Order Day: This day occurs on the 9th day of the 8th month, and is a celebration for the great Emperor, who has brought peace and order to the galaxy once more. It should also be noted that this day was once called Supreme Chancellor's day before the coming of the Emperor.

Witchfest Site: there may be hints, but also I think the site itself is OOG

Churchill's black dog returns mentioned in a book by Dr Anthony Storr:
"Black Dog" was Churchill's name for his depression, and as is true with all metaphors, it speaks volumes. The nickname implies both familiarity and an attempt at mastery, because while that dog may sink his fangs into one's person every now and then, he's still, after all, only a dog, and he can be cajoled sometimes and locked up other times.

Is it just me or are a lot of dates out of sequence by a few days ?

Example:
24/04 "Thursday night = film night"..... 24/04 is a saturday
06/07 "Celebrated with some american friends today" ..... surely celebrate with american friends on 4th July (saturday)
23/07 "Went to see Quadrophenia on the beach"......Stella Screens Quadrophinia on the beach was on 24/07 (saturday)
11/08 "Assuming the date Friday 13th is no coincidence" ..... he gets an email 2 days from the future??
29/08 "Marlowe should start work on their new premises today"....WHAT builders work on Sunday??
25/09 "Oxford is course is the exception. I'll go on Saturday" ..... 25/09 is Saturday. [Perhaps realising this, the next entry is dated for 27/09 stating he went yesterday {sunday}, if you follow]

A gross oversight on the PM's behalf by erroeously linking dates to real world events?? or....... is the whole point to make us look closer at some other dates........

Always,
The Cryptic Celt.

Hey remember the 2nd post and Jon mentions that people will give their password for chocolate? Clicking the link you will find a comment that reads..

I work for a high profile IT company and I am amazed at the number of people that use common everyday names or words as passwords. We have to use 'alphanumeric' passwords i.e. 'mer45cedes' as an example. As a word of advice to anyone who is confronted with the common practice of using 'mother's maiden name' when setting up an account online - don't use her real maiden name, use anything else you like. You don't have to use the real name, just remember a fictitious one for 'computer use only'. Also, don't use your name as a log-in, use something alphanumeric such as your car and car registration number i.e. peugeotrv02tkn - it is just as easy to remember (usually) but harder to crack.

Jon

Well I tried both of those passwords in the room upstairs and looked around for this othe Jon and I came up with nothing. I also tried looking through the 9th gate forum at imdb and couldn't find a post that would seem to help in anyway.

The "New Order Day" thing could be a clue. The journal entry is dated 22 April, 113 days into a year (assuming this is a Gregorian calendar and that it is a leap year, as 2004 is), and, according to Daedalus-XIII, the New Order Day would be on the 222nd day of the 366-day calendar (9th day of 8th month, so could 98 or 98 be of signifigance?). As there is an obvious discrepancy, I found that their calendar would be 109 days ahead of ours. With this, we see that that the first day of their new year would be on September 14th on a Gregorian Leap Year calendar. Jon had an entry on the 14th of September, of which I quote (bolded points that may be of use),
Quote:
A curious email from Lorelei, an ally of HWAU:

"I know you're involved with Hornchurch, but looking at the new articles, don't you find it suspicious how that nobody won the lottery like that?"

Yes and No.

Yes - It is strange.

No - I am not involved with Hornchurch - despite my attempts.
Hence, we see some odd items: 1) He mentioned, by name, a person he received a "strange e-mail" from, something he has not done before or since; 2) "Lorelei" believes that Harker is in with the people at Hornchurch/Sable & Shuck/The Great Conspiracy, so is Jon could, hypothetically, be a double agent; 3) The "how" in the e-mail doesn't grammatically belong there, and, being the 18th word in the e-mail quote and the 27th word in the post, it may give signifigance to the numbers 18 and/or 27; and 4) Jon refutes "Lorelei"'s previous statement, but says that he has tried to accomplish said task, giving us multiple possible clues: a)"Lorelei"'s false assertion and Jon's correction could be a subtle hint that "Lorelei" is a creation of Jon's in order to give us clues that onlookers from the MIB's camp won't see (compound this with point 1), b) There would be records in the Hornchurch family of sites that would have record of Jon's presense, and/or c) Jon needs us to get into Hornchurch for him, as he can't. Sorry for the big post, but the pieces just fell into place for me. Wink [/i][/quote]

steam powered computers

Hi, can anyone give me a brief update on where things are at, please!! I was getting hooked on this and driving my partner and work colleagues mad right up until the hidingroom came to light. From then on i have been left behind due to my old dial up modem. I cant get anywhere on the site. "Ahah" i thought, abuse the work broadband but that doesnt have flash and will not let me install it Mad
So now I am left reading the posts and wondering what might have been. Is the cache a new site or another part of the hidingroom.
Is there anything I can be doing to help on anything else?
I am expecting a coal delivery tomorrow so the computer should be ok!!

Actually he mentions an email just after that, and doesn't give a name I surmise because the writer does it himself... "Marrec here"

and the how is correct
Denis calls himself a nobody in the article

she's asking isn't it suspicious how Denis won the lottery

so... it intends to read "isn't it suspicious how that nobody (of a person) won the lottery"
