The chances of anyone checking this thread are probably fairly slim, but, just in case, I am posting this anyway. Local beekeepers unite and enjoy some lovely choices of choral music. Are we meeting somewhere afterwards? Inquiring minds want to know. Following is the email that I (and whoever else DarkForge has on his e mail list) received today:

DarkForge wrote:
Ahoy me hearties! As I believe you're all aware, you (and everybody else
I should have invited) are welcome to come hear me and the rest of the
Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra perform on 12/19 (this Sunday!)
at 4PM, not far from Downtown Berkeley BART.

(If you're planning on coming, do reply to the evite, so I get a sense of
how many will be there.)

This performance is going to be beautiful, or I'll eat my hat, which would
be terrible, because my newest hat is one of those fine Apiarian numbers,
complete with netting. I'll bring it along just for humor value.

And despite what Jane tells you, THIS IS NOT A PUZZLE. Smile

How could I miss such a festive gathering with the beloved team? (i.e., I am planning on being there, barring unforseen mishaps with time.)

I now notice Sparks every single time I see it, I'll have you know. Twisted Evil

see you Sunday!

Kiyash and I will be there as well!
I think it's a great idea to go get some festive holiday drink afterwards... christmas coffee? peppermint tea? hot apple cider? egg nog milkshake? sparks?

Crap. Looks like I miss out again. I could theoretically speed out of my house like... now, and make it, but I can barely move due to all the boxes in my room containing the last 24 years of my life. Maybe I'll make it for some sort of event perhaps in the future possibly. Maybe.

see you January 26...

(last night the amazing darkforge -- known to his fellow chorale members as the amazing Dan -- wowed us with his handsome tuxedo-ness, a littany of creepy medieval christmas carols, and an impossibly difficult singalong finale. thank you dan for inviting us, and congratulations on a really impressive performance!)

and now, an announcement:

hoorah! good news for one and all

the next monthly-ish meetup of the Berkeley/SF beekeepers will be:

Wednesday January 26, 7:30 PM, at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley
for a screening of payphone scout Kiyash Monsef's documentary G4M3RS!

The PFA location can be found here: (actually quite close to several of the Berkeley axons)
2575 Bancroft Way
Between College and Telegraph

we can possibly meetup at strada first to caffienate? or go somewhere for a drink after...l

tickets are: $4 berkeley students, $5 non-berkeley students, $8 grownups
BONUS: I'll smuggle in copies of the G4M3RS dvd for you guys to keep after the screening.

The PFA's description of the event:
WED JAN 26 2005
7:30 G4M3RS: Clans, Mods, and a Cultural Revolution
Kiyash Monsef (U.S., 2003)

Artist and Clan Members in Person

In 1999, a few high school whiz kids tricked out the game engine from Half-Life and created Counter-Strike, the most popular first-person, multiplayer computer game in the world. Out of the Counter-Strike phenomenon has arisen a global network of clans, the name given to gaming collectives, who compete for high stakes at annual championships. Kiyash Monsef's G4M3RS follows the members of two Bay Area clans—Second 2 None and The Speakeasy Offensive—as they rise through the ranks of competitive gaming. Interviews with the players from S2N and TSO, some of the original CS mod squad, game industry reps, and even members of a cheat collective add dimension to an already 3-D universe of team-driven play. The path to the Cyberathlete Professional League Championship in Dallas is strewn with more obstacles than Counter-Strike's own terrorist scenarios. Among leading clans from Brazil, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States, the fight for survival is on. An insider's POV, G4M3RS shows us a subculture of trigger-quick, crack competitors whose dreams crash as often as their computers.

Join us after the screening for a gaming party and Counter-Strike demo at gLAB, a cyber gaming center, across the street from the PFA Theater.

Yea! I will be there with eight dollars consisting of the smallest monetary unit (pennies, for you out-of-towners).

Last night was lots of fun! The music was exquisite (pita kicks herself for missing the first half, especially Britten's Ceremony of Carols) and the company afterwards at Al Coquette (did I get the name right?) was charming. Thanks everyone. And to those of you who missed it, boo! Come to the film screening on the 26th!

In fact, Jane, maybe you should create a thread in the General/Updates section inviting all beekeepers, in case anyone else is going to be in the Bay Area at that time? Then again, if anyone is, then that person'd probably check this thread. der.

At the PFA, will there be any forbidden stairways to search for? Wink

G4M3RS

I highly recommend this documentary. I got a copy of the DVD a month ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is an interesting look at one of the most popular online computer games of all time and the community that grew around it.

And since I am mentioning Counter-Strike....

I recently signed up with XFire. If anyone uses that and wants to play a few rounds of CS : Source or any of a large number of other online PC games, my tag is ariocklovesbees.

Now that I am back home with a cat on my lap (I swear, for my cat, my lap is like heroin to a heroin addict), a refreshing beverage at my side, and my computer in front of me, I can write this post.

Last Wednesday night there was (yet another) Bay Area Beekeeper Bash in Berkeley. We met Beth Hoffman (the voice of Dana on the voice mail recording) so that was cool. Then we saw Kiyash's documentary, G4m3rs, which rocked. Here is a link for you to buy it, which you should, because you will love it.

And when I say you, I mean you!

After that, we went to the LAN party across the street where Jane and I discussed forming a CS girl clan. Rather than play, we all decided nourishment and conversation was much more important, so we headed down Telegraph to Blake's, went upstairs, and got ourselves a big Last Supper table and had a grand old time.

Thank you all. It was fun and fundillyicious and Fun, Inc.

Next time: A Groundhog Day Gathering, February 5? Isn't Groundhog Day February 2?

Yeah, what is UP with that? Supposedly, the tectonic action at the San Andreas fault moves you guys an inch or two to the north every year.

HURRY UP!

Wink

Also, the Groundhog Day Party is a 24-hour long event. So having it on a weekend would be required for the most part.

PS to Shad0: did you ever figure out the quotation for the GCHQ challenge? They posted a hint on the website to solve the bits we solved already...

A hint to solve the bits we solved already? How helpful. I am butting in, because I helped to solve those bits with you, buddy. I want a hint to help solve the bit we didn't solve. Pah!
