Being an empty door can mean more than one thing. I can think of two at the possibilities at the moment.

a) It sure is a red herring
b) We shouldn't be able to get into that door at this point in the game. There are puzzles we have to solve first, and the puppet master(s) is watching over our shoulder. The door's secrets will be revealed when we have gathered enough clues.

I don't think it would be wise to assume theres nothing behind the door. Take TimeHunt (a semi-ARG puzzle game) for example...you can decompile the flash all you want and it won't show you the location of the other parts of the game...it makes a call back to the server, which will then fetch the proper place youre supposed to go. Now I don't know if thats the case here as I haven't looked at the decompiled code at all, but I remember people saying there was no animations for the book opening either, and lo and behold it was proved wrong and the cache is now all ours. I'd assume there is something behind that door, or else they of not put a hotspot/password there.

Info through Email?

I was wondering if the password prompt behind the bookcase checked the name and email

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It doesn't. Will entering my own email address send me another clue?

i've looked over the flash code quite a bit, as i started out on this whole thing at thehidingroom.com with no idea it was an ARG (and as an interactive designer myself, i just wanted to see what was going on behind the scenes). pretty hardcore code going on in there (md5 security, etc). there are several clues in there to parts of the game that are not available yet (or maybe never will be), but nothing worth mentioning. i have pretty much given up on looking through the code, as it takes most of the fun out of it (and the devs have done a tip-top job of securing the things that they want secured)...

Regarding my theory

Regarding my earlier post, I recived the following message after using my address, instead of Jon's.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Welcome friend,

Congratulations, you have found my journal.

I apologise for the lengths that I have gone to in order to protect myself, but
you will soon understand why I thought this so necessary.

I will be in contact as soon as I am able. If I am not, it can only mean one
thing.

Defiantly,

Jon Harker

I noticed that all the sentences, aside from the greetings/goodbye and the introduction, start with the letter I. Does it mean anything? There is also a new email address: jonSPLATthehidingroom.com

I've also been using the way back machine (linked from jon's journal as an interesting link) and started applying it to ingame sites.

We can see that there was a pathway travel from nov 25 2003: http://web.archive.org/web/20031125221243/http://www.pathwaytravel.com/

The last incarnation of golden futures and options:
http://web.archive.org/web/20021008073429/http://goldenfuturesandoptions.com/
that's from oct 8th 2002, but we can safely assume that it was bought up as there were no edits again.

This is all I can get from the ingame sites on the sticky thread. I dunno if people can apply it elsewhere? The address for the machine is http://web.archive.org/collections/web.html

I'm just putting up these things so people can have access to them in case they spot anything I don't and also so that we don't have 2 waste time doing the same data mauling over and over. Sorry for the long posts though.

IDK, maybe this message was just to let us know that we are moving in the right direction, and we will receive further instructions soon. Or maybe we'll have a few days to figure it out and the someone (like brigid) will just tell us again.

I used the wayback machine as well. As you enter pathwaytravel I got a page telling that the domain had been claimed. There were instructions on how to upload your files to the server. Maybe we should try to get into that server. It gives an IP number, username (pathwaytravel.com). All we would need is a password.

Pronage,

Check postings on page 2 and the followups from SuperJems. It might save you a bit of time. Wink

Always,

Please don't try to get into the server. There is no hints towards needing to do this, at all (and no checking what the website looked like during development of the game doesn't count), and it generally just annoys the PM's and can cause trouble (see for example a player gaining access to an in-game characters blog in I Love Bees.)

I'm not trying to jump on you pronage Smile Just trying to nip it in the bud before we get a whole bunch of people try to hack into the websites, port scan the servers, and generally cause mischief for the PM's. If we were meant to do something like that, they'd make it blatantly obvious Smile

You'd be surprised at the amount of references this game has to "historical" people. So far, just about everything we've seen has had a connection that goes beyond mere coincidence. Jon Harker, Den Horen, Marlowe Digitial, the church key are all part of the mythology that is making up this game. I'm not quite sure what you mean by a hoax though. The game is real and the reward is real (as evidenced by out-of-game emails that some people have received). But it is still just a game - no one named Jon Harker has gone missing in real life after he sold his soul to the Devil. So I guess it all lies in your definition of "hoax"

Oh, and by the way, make sure you check your caps lock key before posting. Or you can learn to love the edit button (like I do) Very Happy

Hmm, I wonder though if I may be feeding something I shouldn't. If I am, I'll just blame it on being tired cuz it is late

And to add to that....The Frances Griffith-article appeared in the "Fortean Times", which is another reference to Charlie Fort and his theories/inspirations.
