Re: door next to fridge

re. my earlier post on the key/ring between the apples and the opener/church key (key x 2...), I'm glad to see that more of you saw that. too bad it's not clickable...

but anyway, my second q was about the door next to the fridge... don't y'all find it odd that it's there and non-clickable...?

There's actually two doors that aren't clickable; one in the kitchen and one in the study. Similarly, we can't turn on the the sink, the toaster oven, or the sink in the kitchen. We can't open the beer in the fridge. The TV in the living room doesn't work, and the cellphone in the study can't be accessed. I don't really find it odd that these items don't work, they're just not part of the game. But, it would be cool to have a few more things to interact with on the site.

What's really got me perplexed is something that we can click on; The bowl of apples and the bottle opener. There's gotta be something more to this.

doors and such

yeah, get your point.

something else that bothers me is that the layout of the appartment is such that in my opinion there cannot be anything outside the mezzanine door other than... the outside of the appartment. look at the windows on the lower level...

Library that doesn't exist

Did a google search on "library that doesn't exist and found this rather interesting link:
http://freespace.virgin.net/j.shire/libraryofthesphinx/guide.htm

If you click on the Lovecraft and Borges links and readyou will find some intersting stuff especially this part:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Borges' more obvious intimations of infinity are found in the books within his books. To begin with the greatest creation, the infinite 'Library of Babel', he casts all apparent logic aside (multiple languages and histories still appear, the concept of the 'library' is really only possible if there can be an outside to see one from) to create an infinite, hive-like structure connected by stairwells and inhabited by obsessed librarians. All theories of knowledge have been propounded here at one time, every possible book, every combination of letters, is contained by the library, every possible piece of knowledge must therefore be in the books. The librarians, the inhabitants, merely debate the nature of meaning, defined by their limited understanding, their limited reading, their limited being.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IMHO Devil's island is off the coast of French Guyana, as featured in the Dustin Hoffmann flick Papillon and, more significantly, the Stella Artois advert as fetured here: http://www.stellaartois.co.uk/swf/mainMovie.html

From the Trident Air site
Quote:
Following renewed media interest in Devil's Island, French Guiana, Trident Air have relocated their entire fleet and operational headquarters to Devil's Lake. Based at a latitude of 48 06N, longitude of 098 54W and elevation of 1450 feet this new location allows us to reach even the most remote of mythical locations quicker than ever.

So what they are saying is that they are provideing travel service to Devil's Island, French Guinana from thier new offices in Devils Lake North Dakota USA. The offices appear to be just south of the Airport, DVL. I do note that the elevation is closer to 1428, but hey i guess they are allowed to round up.

I think the apples and the beer in the fridge are the first part of the contract.
If you go in the Sable&Shuck site, you see that all the new acquisitions have FMCG = The finest food and beverages know to mankind (FMCG Option).

So we can assume that Jon Harker had the FMCG as first desire, and something else as desire in unnatural life, and he got apples and beer.

One thing i find strange: I the guestbook on Babel he wrote that all the new information will be found in his journal, BUT the journal stops at 23 october.
Jon is disappeared the 31 October at 9:21, according to sable shuck site and the email.
First question: Jon has gone to Babel, then WHERE he's gone? He has not updated his journal, so...?

Also Jon said "if u and I meet in the right place", and we know that pressing u and i in the hwau website open a popup that say "Nice try. But you need to be a lot less literal."
A LOT less literal. Uhm... numerical? lol
Maybe there's somenthing in the hwau website, who knows?

I think he was talking about how to find the hiding room website. If you ("U") go to where we first met Jon on his website (the about page) and look in his eye ("I") - you'll find the hidden link to the hidingroom site. I think the popup was just there to tell us we're close, but our thinking is a bit off.

No need to spoil stuff that has been discussed numerous times throughout the threads.

But unfortunately, we still at this time do not have the password for the contract. While we don't have a thread specifically for this puzzle (this thread is close but as I've answered this twice in five minutes, should we set up a new thread just for the contract pwd?), there is a Wiki entry on it. When we figure out the answer, you'll know.

I don't think a new thread will do us any good at this point. There are numerous clues we need to have this stuff finished by the 22nd, or that there may be some revelations on that date. Better hang back and watch what happens.

Hi...
When you follow the link to the BBC article about passwords (in the book in the safe), you can read Jon's reply: <snip>

Whether it means anything, I have no idea...
Kind regards and let's count down till tomorrow,
Wink...

This has been discussed a couple of times under the Cache thread. It's great to have you aboard, but please make sure you take the time to look at the other threads (or use the search button if you're in a hurry to make a post).

I was thinking about the "U & I" reference this weekend, and remembered the book "U and I" written by Nicolson Baker:

http://partners.nytimes.com/books/01/04/15/specials/baker-u.html

Mr. Baker undertakes an analysis of John Updike's ("U") works in a very unique way, and even meets Mr. Updike in the following circumstances:

Quote:
Mr. Baker actually does meet Mr. Updike, twice -- once at an unceremonious book signing when Mr. Baker stands on line with his mother and presents his copy of "Rabbit Is Rich" for the author to sign, and again during a party at the Harvard Lampoon offices, when Mr. Updike remembers reading one of Mr. Baker's short stories and graciously pronounces it "a lovely thing."

Baker also wrote a book entitled "The Mezzanine" and a number of essays on libraries. I haven't read enough of his work, but it almost seems like there might be something happening here that is more than just coincidence. Anyone have any thoughts, other than that this is just reading too much into the U & I references?
