unfortunately i have to work this afternoon
a block of hex, then a list of binary... i'd say it was a bitmask of some sort for the hex bit, but you arranged them into bytes.......

angelo, you're not a geek... that was fun

angelo's crypto solve...
in short... I'll use a smaller font so as to save a bit of thread space...
the colour codes are the codes to standard 'web-safe' colours... I'm guessing through various lists... I didn't bother finding the original source of your colour codes, just did a yahoo search for each of the codes themselves. The first letters spell out the key to the binary...

taking the first five bits of each of the bytes below, arrives at alphanumeric values 1-26, the alphabet... each line in turn spells out text... I'll quote in full the first line and summarize the rest...

THE GREEKS USED A DEVICE CALLED THE SKY TALE
A STAFF AROUND WHICH A LONG THIN STRIP OF LEATHER WAS WRAPPED AND WRITTEN ON
THE LEATHER WAS TAKEN OFF AND WORN AS A BELT
THE RECIPIENT WOULD HAVE A MATCHING STAFF THEY USED TO DECODE THE MESSAGE
GEEZ I AM A GEEK
and BTW angelo, you messed up ONE bit... you spelled out "A MATCHING STAFF THEQ USED"...
but s'all good...
next? this is fun... now I'm in the mood for cryptography... hehe

There are three parts to the solution. What is the connection between the men in the first list and the women in the second list? Which man pairs with which woman? And what is the hidden quotation?
Just to make things a little more interesting, GCHQ will be offering copies of 'Big Bang' the latest book by Simon Singh, the well known mathematician and code expert, to six successful solvers whose names will be drawn from a hat.
Answers should be emailed to pressofficeSPLAT gchq.gsi.gov.uk and must be received by Thursday 27 January 2005. After that cut-off date, we will publish a hint to guide those who need some extra help on the understanding that they will not be allowed to submit their solutions for the prize draw.
Answers to the challenge and names of prize winners will appear on the website on Monday 7 February 2005.

Below are, in chronological order, six extracts from written works, both fiction and non-fiction, with a bearing on cryptography or intelligence. Five of them are from the beginning of the work in question, and one is from the beginning of a chapter. For each one, you need to decode the extract and identify the work. Once you have all the answers, can you find the hidden six-letter word?

I've always been more of a fan of Steganography. It's actually one of the primary things that attracted me to ILB.
No-one has ever noticed, but I find it humorous. Wish you were here.

Where do you find the standard correspondences?

Straight binary, isn't it? That is:
00001 = 1 = A
00010 = 2 = B
00011 = 3 = C
00100 = 4 = D
00101 = 5 = E
and so on.
