I find it difficlt to think that 2401 was "merged" with Gravemind. I don't think it's possible to fully interface an AI program in with a 10000 year old rotting giant octopus.

well that's a conclusion that's hard to draw... for all we know GM may have some kinetic power in the sense that if it's that intelligent, it could possibly hack into PT's electronics, just as it could hack into the neural network of a living being... hard shell or not, it's more of a mind control than a merging of flesh... IMO

I got the impression that Gravemind was more holding 2401 prisoner than anything else. PT still wanted to activate the ring, and Gravemind wanted that not to happen more than anything else. I think that might also have something to do with the condition of the Halo: with PT captured, there was no one to maintain it, so it fell into disrepair. As far as the teleport thing, it was clear Gravemind had control over some of the ring's systems, but not even close to all of them. It couldn't stop the Halo from charging, couldn't redirect the sentinels to not attack the flood, and couldn't brainwash 2401.

Pertaining to Gravemind hacking Cortana and thwarting her attempts at slowing the Forerunner ship: Possible, but I doubt it. I think the construct giving her trouble wasn't Flood or Covenant, but Forerunner. She was trying stop the delay of one of their ships, after all. Furthermore, she's never had any real trouble with Covie stuff, but she couldn't prevent the Monitor from ransacking the Pillar of Autumn's databse. Granted, that's not really much evidence, but it's my hunch.

That's all I've got for now.

I dont know to what extent he controlled 2401 PT. Since, obviously he could use the teleportation device, he had some control over it, but PT kept talking about how the Reclaimer needed to activate the Ring and kill the flood etc. So some of the "host" survived obviously, like the Prophet, but since PT was a machine it seems like it would be harder to "incorporate" it into the fleshy Gravemind.

Also, the Prophet fell into the water fairly close to when Master Chief did, and the Prophet seems to really be merged physically with the Gravemind, which seemed to take place really quickly.

Nothing of the host survives!

Sorry, I saw the chance for a Stargate SG-1 reference, and I couldn't help myself. Laughing Wink

One thing to remember about the gravemind taking the prophet of regret, the prophet was already dead, whereas the Chief was only "Mostly dead".

No, you've got the wrong prophet. Regret is the one in Gravemind's tentacle, not Mercy. Mercy was the one that got gobbled.

Eek! Whoops, I'm sorry! Dang, that is weird... In that case I don't have any real good theories at the moment...

edit: Actually now that I think about it, when you go and whoop Regret, he dies in his chair thing and you go running out of the building as the Covenant fleet turns the platform he was fighting in into a microwave, so how could it be him? Do the Flood rush in at the end and I missed it or something? I need to go back and play it...

Mercy was the only Prophet we've seen that was being eaten by the Flood, at least that I recall. Are we sure it's Regret in the Gravemind?

edit 2: I'm real tired. School is hard.

Yep, pretty sure it's Regret in there. Smile

That did strike me as odd too, when I first saw GM.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Regret died in the chair. Right after that, MC falls into the water and gets caught by GM. Supposedly while MC is unconscious Regret somehow gets taken by and integrated with GM. My guess would be that GM's tentacles are searching for corpses to claim, and we just don't see them take Regret because it happens in the short period after MC leaves the building, but before it gets all blowed up. Or perhaps when the Covvies destroy that temple, Regret's body falls into the water.

Edit: This is my 42'nd post! w00t!

My personal theory is that the flood was a forerunner experiment in the area of eternal (or at least greatly extended) life. Something went wrong with the process, flood escaped, and bang the halos had to be fired.
