[Halo 2] NWLGG LAN party report in

So, our little LAN party we had in London, organized by our own Anton P. Nym was quite entertaining, with our special guest, Mr.Nathan Walpole (aka bentllama) from Bungie Studios gracing us with his presence, as he was visiting family in the area...

as for me, my friend and I arrived a couple hours late due to unforseen circumstances, but we arrived just in time for the pizza. It was good to finally meet Anton, and enjoy a series of 11 player games. The weather was good, the drive there was longer than the drive home (up to an hour drive from my home to Anton's) but it was definitely worth it...

if you ever play bentllama in Halo 2, be aware - he's a natural sniper, and may easily lead any game where sniping would count towards final score (ie slayer) much like Rendon Razz. And if he's given permission to utilize carney-holes, he will use them to their potential. Smile Otherwise, really he's a fairly average player (well, above average, but not like a Halo 2 god as some may think).

Anton's guests included friends and co-workers, a number of whom had either never played Halo, or rarely if ever played Xbox... so the average experience was fairly low, and by stats, where I and my friend felt we'd be around the middle and consistently topped overall by bentllama, I, along with one of Anton's guests (gumdrop), my friend (mensh - its german), and bentllama, seemed to be fighting for top spot in most games.

Any game with swords seemed to be the favourite of the night. Unfortunately, we pretty much only ever played predefined games, without having the luxury of a box with all our favourite beekeeper inspired game types (so, no DRT, though we did the slightly altered phantom king, no Pious Flea, no Dawn of the Dead, or zombies, etc)...

Even so, it was a great great time. Thanks to Anton for hosting us all...
my friend and I pushed through to the very end, being of the last 4 people to play, including Anton and a friend of his - the last 4 player game ended at about 3:45am (after quite a number of 4 player single life elimination slayer games on foundation Laughing ). Which is why the date on this post should read about 6am EST... due to a bit of chatting at the end and finishing up remaining junk food and drinks, and the drive back, and catching up on today's forum posts Smile

and now I'm going to bed...
*sigh*

Until next time!

PS. No Nathan didn't give us any additional info about Halo 2.5 or updates that we didn't already know Razz But it was great to meet him... and stupid me, didn't think of asking him to sign my LE Halo 2 case I had taken with me... blah!
Wink

That late? Wow, no wonder I'm tired. Smile

The LAN party was a blast. If you can arrange one yourselves I heartily recommend it. This is coming from someone who (through PC and Live play) viewed split-screen a bit askance before trying it... but even on a 20" TV it worked out alright. (Once I got the picture colour balanced properly on that set... apologies to Joel, Sean, and gumdrop for not noticing that sooner.) Orienting yourself can be a bit awkward at first but you quickly adapt.

Hookup is absurdly simple; just get a standard Ethernet hub (we used the LAN ports on a router) and plug straight-through Cat-5 Ethernet cable into each jack. Go into the "system link" menu and the Xboxes will automatically be able to find each other.

I cannot recommend gaffers' tape enough, even though it led me to start the evening with Real Carnage. (Big drippy paper cut from the spool, silly me.) With every Xbox putting out a power cable AND an ethernet cable the trip hazards get pretty high without it... with the tape down, it's relatively easy to get from place to place while holding pizza and soft drinks.

It's best to have people bring more Xboxes than you can hook together, as we experienced some "ebb and flow" during the party; before the night was through, two of our 'boxes had to leave with their slaves owners but we were still able to play system link games well into the night

The skill levels ranged all the way along the scale: bentllama, thebruce, gumdrop, and MENSCH were in the top tier; myself, smiley, Joel, and kegger had moderate experience; and Tom, Sean, and James had very little time playing. My original plan was to have the latter three over before the Christmas holiday and give them a basic workout, but schedules didn't permit so Tom and James were a bit greener than I'd hoped. They did show remarkable progress throughout the evening, though.

With such a broad span of skills, I found that FFA games with "sudden death" weapons (rockets, swords, and Facehole) worked fairly well as well as shared-objective team games. Territories was surprisingly fun, as even novice players found themselves able to capture and hold a territory even if only for a little while, and the ever popular Crazy King served as a valuable teaching aid in getting players to learn the maps.

I'm regretting not thinking to play Team Oddball for a bit, as you can "swap" between players and let the less-experienced ones run the ball (and so be able to point to an in-game accomplishment) while the more experienced players play defense.

Another suggestion is to make sure that you mix experience levels when seating people at 'boxes... an unholy trinity of bentllama, gumdrop, and thebruce ruled for a while as they sat at one screen together.

All in all, an incredibly fun night. Glad you enjoyed it, thebruce; and folks should know that even those who didn't fare too well in the Carnage Reports found the game irresistable. (Tom would've bought an Xbox in the Boxing Day sales if he hadn't just had a fuel-pump failure on his truck... but the odds are good he'll be picking one up in early spring. Aha! Another success for viral marketing!)

-- Steve is now struggling mightily to stay awakzzzzzz....

No pics, at least from me... got too caught up in playing! I think thebruce took a couple though.

-- Steve has no excuse... he even had the camera out and on a tripod. Duh.

yeah, I was way caught up in the playing too, and the room was too small to get one shot with everybody, so I'm not in it as I took the *2* pictures... Smile and a video, but it was so dark with only the light of the tv's illuminating zombified faces Razz

Sweet. I have a couple pics from the LAN disciple hosted... but they're on my buddies camera. I'll steal it from him again soon and upload them.

Maybe I'll call disciple and have him upload the distraction photo his wife took of me... She figured the temporary blindness would help her team. I think it actually worked too. Wink

Note, class, the shiny camera atop a tripod to the right of the TV in the second picture... pity I completely forgot to use it. Halo 2 is just that good.

(To put names to the faces, from the left; me, Sean, MENSCH, and Tom.)

If you do host a party of your own, and you want pictures taken, it might be best to schedule some in as a break between games. It's just too easy to forget otherwise.

-- Steve also forgot to take a moment to get a pic taken of himself... so once again the mystery is preserved. Mwa-hahahahahaha! *thunderclap*
