[Possible ARG?] Gaelph

Our boredom in #uf was interrupted when someone came in and posted a new site

Quote:
[15:01] *** Gaelph has joined #unfiction
[15:01] <Gaelph> <www.gaelph.com>
[15:02] *** Gaelph Quit (Quit: Quitting)

Not withstanding the fact that #uf is not supposed to PMs, the website does seem to be the start of an ARG.

Now discuss amongst yourselves.

Be careful how much digging you do on this site. By looking at the source or doing a whois, it is very easy to turn up information that may have been meant to stay behind the curtain.

Interesting things in the source...

I already accidentally found out who the PM is.
But it is definatly a ARG.

[SPEC] Date?

Ok,
anyone has any hint about that

01.18.1456
Neft hapten, ko'dahn Gaelph

on the front page?

First line seems like a date to me, but not (I hope) in the gregorian calendar.
It might be the date when the journey will begin, in some other calendar. Now, is the second line supposed to hint at what this other calendar might be?

F.O.R.

PS: looking on the wikipedia for 1456 returns a few info, among which :

August 20 - Vladislav II, reigning Prince of Wallachia is killed in battle by Vlad III Dracula who succeeds him.
Shocked

A couple of things; I'm marking them as spoilers to keep in line with your prev post.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

On the index page it seems there is a 2x2 hot area on the image (not sure where, but I looked at the source) that should send you to the decrement script.
I tried to get to the script a couple of times, but the numbers it display are always the same, so I don't think that it decrements each time we go there. Maybe it is linked to the number of e-mails received by the gaelph address?

Cheers,
F.O.R.

I emailed the PM to make him close the curtain.

Here's my email:
Quote:
Hello,
I saw you posting your rabbithole today at #unfiction.

In the matter of minutes, we found out who you are and where the website is originally hosted.
We also found the decrementCounter.php, but I guess we were meant to, cause it is image mapped.

We haven't got further, but till next time, talk to Bill, as he offers ARG hosting..

Regards,
jchillerup

And his answer:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
decrementCounter.php is just so we can easily check on the counter without incrementing it ourselves. Feel free to play around with it if you want. There are two counters (counter.dat and counter02.dat), and decrement.php only messes with the first one, so feel free to ping/run it as much as you want. Counter02.dat is the one we really use. It's a handy script. You can have the code if you want, but it's simple enough that it'd probably be simpler to just rewrite it if you want it.

Yeah, gaelph.com is hosted here at the University of Arkansas' campus computers, on a student's account. Just in case you're wondering, we're just students looking for an unconventional creative outlet, and thought ARG'ing would be perfect. I, for example, am an English/Journalist major here. The originating URL is: <http://comp.uark.edu/~tskoch/gaelph/index.php>

I guess it's not quite ARG'ing, really, but it's similar. Who knows, maybe we'll be able to find a way to incorporate users and make it true ARG! But not yet. First, Gaelph must depart! Smile
If you have any venues for letting people know about it, we'd appreciate the traffic. But please don't tell anyone about us or who we are. We'd rather keep that private. (You know, the whole "smoke-and-mirrors" mystique thing Wink )

Ta!
Tim
Writer of Gaelph's adventures

Then we had a little chit-chat, and he became angry with me, because he felt I was rude... But that's not interesting at all Wink

[META]Really? He got upset at you? And he wants to PM an ARG? I think he'll be seeing more rudeness than that if he's going to PM something that hundreds of people will spend at least a cursory moment picking apart for clues... Tim, if you read this, please understand it's our job to dissect whatever we can, and sometimes that mean we're not very caring with our discourse, as long as it breeds results or the possibility of results... Sorry...[/META]

So anyway, anything really new with this, or does that all mean that nothing is really happening here, and until we hear otherwise, ignore the man behind the large curtain, and while you're at it, ignore the curtain, and the curtain's surroundings as well? Wink

What curtain?

true... however, if I am interpreting correctly, then the reason the curtain was so aggregiously breached by jchillerup is to ensure we all knew that nothing was happening, and that this is not an ARG, correct? So in this case, while it may have been bad form, it was informative, right? Or am I completely misinterpreting you sarcasm, jamesi?

When have I ever been sarcastic on these boards? Very Happy Okay, all the time, but anyway...

I agree with your points, but can see the PMs side of things as well. If I was running a game, it might come across as combative or rude if someone was to tell me (a) what to do and (b) where to host, while assuming (c) I knew someone named Bill, and (d) I wwished to have unsolicited advice concerning a game I created.

I can see the intent of the message to the PMs was in good faith, though, but I don't know if people should take it upon themselves to personally contact outed "PMs" and tell them what we think they've done wrong... I think there was another game (Sarah Kiddo?) that had something similar happen with how the "ARG" was constructed and implemented.

Long story short... what took place is in the past, and we'll carry on from here. Oh look, there's the curtain!

(And, I will definitely use emoticons more often when issuing statements of sarcastic nature. Sorry for the miscommunication.)

Here's a funny story..

Bill sent them an email last night offering hosting so they could hide a bit easier. No reply to my most generous offer as of this moment.

I'm the PM for Gaelph.com. Sorry if you thought I got mad. I wasn't upset; I just thought you were tring to be smug ("in a matter of minutes" & "but I guess we were meant to, cause it is image mapped" sounded sarcastic and smug to me). My initial thought after your email was, "More power to you, dolt. It doesn't take a genius to click 'view source' " (too harsh, I know, but honestly my first thought).

Anyways, no, the URL's and scripts arent secret or anything. I'm not really worried about a curtain. It's just that "gaelph.com" is easier to remember than "http://comp.uark.edu/~tskoch/gaelph/index.php".

Spot on with (a) and (d). But I guess I just took it wrong. Sorry!!

Tim

Very Happy

P.S. I know PM posting is usually a no-no, but I just didn't want people thinking I'm a jerk...
