[spam] Possible, um... something...

Here's a really weird e-mail I got. I don't sign up for a lot of stuff so I don't get any spam I'm not expecting.

From : Irrespective E. Magellanic <hoaxing@xfx.net>
Sent : Monday, January 3, 2005 10:46 PM
To : Theinfamoustimmy <my email address>
Subject : Lorna

That's all it is.

Any ideas?

I can't search the html from my work computer... (no view sourcing for me Sad )

When you enter xfx.net into a browser it takes you to a commercial site. Looks like spam to me. (bad spam, since it doesn't even say what it is, or give a link...)

It's a spammer harvesting emails. Its been sent to everyone in the world pretty much under different guises. Basically it beats spam filters because its so short, and if they don't get a bounceback email, they know your email address exists. And then they spam the hell out of you. Not an ARG. No spam is going to end up being an ARG (hopefully, though the spam crypto is pretty cool), so everyone please stop posting it? K, thanks.

Well, again, it's probably nothing but I sent an e-mail and got a quick response back.

I recently recieved an email from your website. It's a very strange message and I'm trying to understand why it was sent to me.

<content of e-mail above>

Any idea?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

And the reply...

Dear Tim,

This sounds like a spam email.

Most of the time, the return email address provided in the emails does not reflect the REAL sender.

If you're using Outlook you could try this:

Select the email message in your Inbox, right click it and select "Options".

Look under "Internet Headers"

Hopefully you should see there the real email address from which the email was sent.

I do assure that there's no email address with that name on our server and that no one here sends unsolicited email.

Xavier Flix

Anyone know how to do this on Hotmail (if possible)?

I at least want to know where the spamming is from.

Ah. The only reason I was confused is because I've never actually gotten any spam at this account and I've had it for a while.
