[Halo 2] X-Box Live DNS Error

This isn't strictly Halo-related, but I'm desperate here. See, I just went out and got a 3-month subscription tonight, thinking everything would be hunky-dory to get online. However, that's not been the case.

Let me give you the rundown here. When I try to access Live, I get these message.

1. Cables connected.
2. IP Addresses resolved (or something similar).
3. DNS Error
4. Can not connect to Live.

Now, I'm trying to access Live directly through a modem, and that means switching my ethernet cable back and forth between my computer and my x-box.
If you guys have any clue what to do for this, please respond.

Are you on a college dorm network? Some of those have DNS servers that don't recognize consoles like x-box, ps2, or gamecube.

A trick you can try is to manually set your xbox's mac (physical address) to the same one your computer has and when you switch the cable from your pc to your x-box then it will fool your network provider into thinking your x-box is really your pc. Then it might allow your xbox to access DNS services. I've seen that work before. You might also contact your service prodiver too, they might have an answer as well.

Here's the rundown on this little problem. I'm going to post this here so that if anyone else has any trouble accessing Live for the first time, they can get the info right here.

Here's the problem:
If you're running Live for the first time, you have to register your DNS and MAC numbers with your ISP, so that they can set you up with a variable internet address.
Now, you have some options with this.

1) You can get into Live by plugging your X-box directly into your cable modem. However, this causes a problem. If you're switching between your computer and your X-Box, you'll need to continually re-register both machines with your ISP each time you switch between them. That's a huge inconvenience.
2) You can use a router. This seems to be the more convenient way to do things.

More on this later.

If you do use the wireless router, too, keep in mind that it has its own MAC address, in addition to the one the Xbox has. We had a few minutes of grief, trying to figure that one out.
