[Halo 2] Backmasking in Halo 2

Someone at Halo.Bungie.Oorg found backmasking in one of the custscenes from the game.

http://halo.bungie.org/oldnews.html?item=11883

This is supposedly the text:

Quote:
"I wander the earth. I seek your forgiveness for my horrible crimes against God. Amen . I wish to seek death, destruction. the light, let the light that cannot be extinguished-"

hmm... intresting, wonder what it means. The fact that they use words like 'Earth', and 'God' and 'Amen' leave me to wonder why you would hear that in the Covenant Holy City. I figured those were more human words.

Then again it's open to translation I suppose.

The other thing is it seems to cut off at the end. Maybe there are segments like this in other cutscenes that when pieced together make up on long story.....hmm isn't that a familiar theme... Idea

Someone else claims to have found the full text, but because he did it by extracting the actual sound bite directly from the disk (as oppposed to recording from normal gameplay), he can't post the link (copyright things).

Anyway, here's the link to the post:

http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=539310

And here's the text:

Quote:
I have walked among men and angels for three thousand years. Time has no end... no beginning... no purpose.

I wander the earth, seeking forgiveness for my horrible crimes against God and man. I live to see death, destruction, over the light, but the light cannot be extinguished.

I live in a prison of my own demise.

I am lost in time..."

ok that's just crazy... clipped the audio myself and listened and it's there, clear as crystal... now I want to go through the game listening for anything that sounds like it could have hidden audio... obviously if there's more text, then this is just one snippet of a pieces... what would be even spookier would be if there's audio in human cutscenes... Shocked but I dunno how it could be hidden, since the covenant environment seems to be filled with 'spookiness', so reversed audio fits...

it's funny though, I never heard anything that sounded reversed before hearing about this... now I can't hear anything but reversed audio... Smile

And actually, for the best results, it's good just to reverse the audio and speed to 150%.

The only questions now are, where are the phrases before and after the whisper in the storm 20 second clip (noted in the first post of this thread), and are there even more throughout the game?

Hmm. When does this take place? Three thousand years from what date?

Wasn't it 2552 or something like that that the Covenant attacked?

So, what characters were around in 500 B.C.E.?

Looking at it -- "crimes against God and man...walked among men and angels" -- the terminology seems to place it squarely within Judeo-Christian, or maybe Persian, religious mythology. (There's a shocker, coming from Bungie. Wink )

Offhand, "walking among men and angels" and "crimes against God and man" could imply a Lucifer-like fallen angel, or Cain, but both of these figures are too old.

In Jewish mythology, there are the figures of Elijah and Serah ben Asher, both of whom are immortal wanderers, but again they're too old and neither of them committed crimes against G-d and man.

A figure from Christian mythology with whom this quote would have some resonance would be the Wandering Jew, who supposedly scoffed at Jesus on the way to the crucifixion and was told that he would wander until Jesus' return. His name has been given, variously, as Ahasuerus, Buttadeus, Cartaphilus, and Juan -- or Malchus, depending on your source. Someone identified him with Nero, which has never made sense to me. The story may have given rise to the Flying Dutchman legend.

But, if we're looking at a date five hundred years from now, any figure from the beginning of the Common Era would be five hundred years too young.

Which leaves us back where we started, with some random, wandering, ~2500-year-old immortal with no obvious myths attached. <sigh>

"Prison of my own demise..." I wonder if it's a vampire?

No. God no. They are NOT bringing in vampires to Halo. I will do horrible horrible things if they do.

I could only find one reference to the "before and after" text, and it was by this guy who shied away from posting his link or more specifics of how he got it, so it's unconfirmed at best.

Anyway, here's a link to a nice library of all the cutscenes... for any inquiring minds out there up for a possible puzzle solve.

It seems strange for the audio to be in the scene it is in, where the Arbiter is being dragged before the prophets, to recieve his fate AS Arbiter.

It seems almost PLAUSABLE that the reversed audio is talking about the position of the Arbiter, as if the armored suit and position of Arbiter exists far beyond the life of the person inside the suit. However, the terminology just doesnt really fit the Covenant, sure they refer to the Forerunner's as "Gods" but it also mentions Angels and a couple of references to "men", which would make no sense for the Arbiter to talk about.

The only reconciliation I could make is that perhaps the position of Arbiter is part of a Forerunner legacy? Sigh.

These are probably the questions you should be asking.

Phaedra wrote:

First answer is November 2nd, 2525 when humanity is first attacked by the Covenant, at least according to The Fall of Reach. The second question is taking it a bit too literally, in my opinion. In the Marathon games, there was a lot of speculation by the fans suggesting that the character you play as is similar to "The Eternal Hero," because in Marathon (I think the first one, but it may have been Infinity), there was a terminal where something was written along the lines of "I have been Gligamesh, Achilles, Beowulf," etc. listing all these historical warriors throughout time. If I'm interprating the backwards-speak correctly, then I believe The Arbitor to be the reincarnation of Bungie's Eternal Hero in Halo.

Marathon Infinity is basically about the player gaining freedom of their actions over themselves, due to the fact that the previous two games had you play constantly under the control of a manipulative A.I. Similarly, the A.I. Durandal in the Marathon trilogy was seeking escape from the closure of the universe, as that was the only way he could predict himself dying (after his rampancy). In the end of the final game, there's a mysterious last terminal message in which somebody is narrating to you about what you've become, which apparently is Destiny.

If you're going by the Marathon rules, the guy you play as could choose his own fate by way of manipulating the Jjaro technology that was put inside him (or something along those lines). That's how they explained how you could die over and over and save and still keep playing. Marathon Infinity's single player campaign is a blur of time and reality, because you're never quite sure where or when you are as you're playing, you only know that you're being attacked and need to find a way out.

Now the Arbiter has been a pretty bad dude in his lifetime. How many countless billions (trillions? even more?) of innocent lives has he killed, whether by his own hand or by commanding the fleets of the Covenant? How many planets has he destroyed? I'd say that if there was a God, that He'd be mighty angry at such a fellow (which is of course trying to guess that we could ever imagine what a God could think, but that's besides the point).

Edit: I can't spell worth a crap.

Edit #2: Here's the link to the Eternal Hero message in Marathon 2 (thanks yet again Hamish): http://marathon.bungie.org/story/kytterm.html

More evidence to back up my claim is in the level select screen for Sacred Icon when you play as the Arbiter searching for the Index, the comment in the menu says, "Succeed where others have failed." On the Marathon Story Page, the webmaster originally made a secret page entitled "Where giants have fallen you can conquer."

My guesses:

1) It's a prayer the soon to be Arbiter is saying. Remember, in Halo 1 all elite speech was reversed.

2) It's a sort of prayer or writ or something of the Arbiter position itself. Since we don't know how long the Covenant Ages are, one could assume that 3000 years could work out.

3) It could be the Gravemind, or something else, like a Monitor, or a surviving Forerunner even.

It sounds RIDICULOUSLY like the Gravemind when at its original speed.

also to note, that piece of music appears a few times throughout the game, including the final boss fight.... at least on heroic, I haven't double checked on other difficulties yet. I hope it'll be on the vol2 soundtrack

ermm... meh... gravemind speaks as though it sounds like someone just speaking a little slower than normal, and digitally lowered in pitch. this voice sounds like it was digitally lowered and slowed down... it sounds like a natural speed voice at about 150%... so I think that's (close to) the natural speed; but whether they altered the pitch, *shrug*..
too many possibilities to say for sure. Working backwards, they could have taken the guy's regular voice, pitched it down, and may or may not have kept the speed static with the alteration. It's possible to interpolate to keep the same rate in a pitch change, where a pitch change naturally speeds or slows down the sound. (eg 50% pitch = 50% speed, but speed can remain at 100% with the sound 'stretched' or squished, interpolated, during the pitch change)
anyway, enough tech talk...
whether it's gravemind or not, I choose to remain neutral Smile
