Extra stuff is put on the end of a picture file?
In short, steganography is when data is hidden inside other data. For example I could stick a hidden message in a random text string like this:
SHTIWNDRNVHSEUSENDREINFORCEMENTSIMMEDIATELYAHTIYRIFN
Now imagine that the hidden data is somewhat better hidden than that in amongst a much bigger file like a JPEG (you'd get some barely noticable artifacts from a short message like that) and you should be getting the idea. Now read the tutorial for more info

I tried every permutation of the segments sasunD mentioned in the first post, Still no hits, I'm beginning to think we might be on a wild goose chase.

yeah, I think maybe you are right...
however, your effort is much appreciated, at least we know to almost certainty that there is no message in the pic.
oh well....
start the game already!!!!!!!

http://www.projectsyzygy.com/images/psyzygynomore2.jpg appears to be stegged.
i used the same method as above.
i'm going to see if i can break it.
stegdetect -n -t jopi -s 3 pp7.jpg
I wouldn't advise using the -s flag. It tends to produce false positives. The first time I have encountered a false negative with stegdetect is with Slumberil. The default value is usually ok.
You don't need -t jopi on your command line either, that is the default value.

thanks. well, i'm afraid too, that the stegging program was wrong, but sometimes stegging comes with lowered image quality, right? and it seems like that there is some "noise" on the picture [and i'm not thinking of that white 'grid' or something.].
but of course, i might be completely wrong about this. i'm going to give it a go with a few other steg detection tools, and if they say i'm wrong, then i apologise.

Morning all. This morning when I synchronised perplex city and index b, Index b had been updated. I looked at the source but nothing seemed different to me (I do tend to glaze over, though, when confronted by all that gobbledegook). Can someone who knows what they are looking at take a look?
Cheers, Fiona

steganography literally means "covered writing" from the Greek. So even invisible ink, or putting a note in your shoe counts.
thank you Simon Singh!

Hmmm, I don't see anything either different or unusual about the page. Nothing hidden in the source at all as far as I can see. It could simply be that the mods had made an update and uploaded every *.html file in their local copy of the site (something I often do simply because it's easier than typing out all the file names individually).
So, nothing to see on index b. However , it does raise an interesting possibility. If there has been a mass-upload of files to the server, as I describe, it would imply that pretty soon we're going to get to see those files Sadly, no sign that anything else has changed either; same message from Marchant, no new error logs, etc. Still, I'm crossing my fingers (which is making it really hard to type, let me tell you).....

Hi Seej - thanks for responding. It can make me feel like a bit of a duffer on here sometimes (which I am not). Thanks for confirming that there wasn't anything I was missing.
I agree with you that though there is nothing different, any change in the status quo could indicate things starting up.

According to the Last-Modified header, it hasn't been updated since 10/7/2004. Are you sure it changed? Did the checksum change? Could you upload the files if you get a chance please.

Hi Anthrax - would be delighted to reply if I knew what the bleep you were talking about. All I know is that when, sad and obsessed as I am, I synchronised Index and IndexB this morning IndexB reported as updated. I looked closely at the page and then at the source, but as I explained this morning I'm not really sure what I'm looking at.
Unfortunately didn't take a screenshot or anything like that and in my excitement have synch it again a couple of times today.

Hi David
Do this with a lot of pages I visit regularly. Sorry if it's a really dunce thing to do but I download the page for offline viewing in IE and then synchronise to see if the site has changed. That means I don't have to trawl through loads of pages.
