Books on Cryptography

Hi everyone

I was wondering whether anyone could recommend some books on cryptography that were worth reading to gen-up on the subject? I'm after anything at all, from fiction with that sort of theme, through more technical manuals to reference sources.

It would also be good if people know of things that are suited to a range of levels of understanding, from really mathsy to those suitable for the bewildered.

I've had one recommendation from Fi already which is The Code Book by S Singh.

Thanks for your help

Mikey

Since you asked for fiction too, I would be remiss to not mention Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.

I think that one will keep you occupied for an hour or three.

I'm currently reading Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier, it's a bit dated and is not exactly intended for ARG style cryptography, but it is quite good for some of the abstract theory behind the protocols. It's not too math heavy, but still pretty dense.

thank you

Thanks for your suggestions...I found The Code Book in Waterstones yesterday and have not been able to put it down. It's excellent and has a good bibliography. What's also excellent is Simon Singh's website, which has some extra bits and pieces (such as a vigenere cracker) http://www.simonsingh.net/

I've ordered the Cryptonomicon, and hope it comes soon as The Code Book is going down very nicely. Applied Cryptography sounds a little more hard core, but will have a look. I'm sure I'll get to that point eventually, it's a test to see how far a bad GCSE in Maths can take me!

thanks for your suggestions

Mikey
