'Join Me' by Danny Wallace

[Moved from earlier topic after repeated badgering]
Something I just noticed, and from my searches, something it seems nobody else has. I went to neurocam.com, and 'joined them'. I then found out about a related site called shellyinnocence.com. That site features Robin Hely (known to have something to do with neurocam.com) and a girl called Shelly. She claims to be reading 'Join Me' by Danny Wallace. For those who don't know, that book is by a man who posted an ad in the local paper which read 'Join Me', and to cut a long story short, the 'join me' thing spread like wildfire and became a bit like a cult. He then went to many different countries to meet 'joinees' who said miraculous things had happened to them after joining.

Sound similar? Ponder at your leisure...

I sent an email:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Mr. Knight:

I have several questions I must ask about your organization before I
accept your offer to act as an operative for Neurocam.

In your letter, you said that my association with your company would
be "mutually beneficial." Please, tell me what long term benefits I
may receive from my operative status?

Also, what types of assignments will I be undertaking as an operative?

Will I be able to discuss Neurocam operations with other operatives,
outside of missions, without reporting to yourself or Ms. Fischer?

Your prompt reply will be greatly appreciated.

I got a response:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Dear Sebastian Shepherd,

Thank you for your queries.

I respect your desire to receive further clarification on these issues.
Unfortunately I suspect that I am somewhat limited in the responses I am
able to provide. Nevertheless, I will attempt to address your concerns to
the best of my ability.

The benefits realized due to Neurocam involvement vary from operative to
operative. The level and nature of benefit is often determined by the
operative's willingness to engage with the organization and quality of the
operative's work. Taking this into consideration, I'm sure you can
appreciate why it is difficult for me to give you a definitive answer to
your question.

The assignments allocated to entry-level field operatives are determined
by a myriad of factors, including, but not limited to, the operative's
physical location, age, the state of Neurocam's other ongoing activities
and any operational requirements that the organization may experience. In
short, assignments will be tailored to both the operative's abilities and
the organization's current operational needs, and so may vary greatly.
Neurocam International assures you, however, that we do not engage in
illegal activities, nor will we encourage you to do so.

Regarding your query about correspondence between operatives - Neurocam
International does not actively discourage general discussion about
Neurocam. Management would, however, prefer that Operatives display a
high degree of discretion when relating details of Neurocam's proprietary
operational practices. The wonton disclosure of details pertaining to
upcoming assignments, which results in the compromise of those
assignments, may result in disciplinary action.

In addition, Neurocam International would prefer to be informed of any
correspondence between field operatives, but understands that this is not
always practical.

I hope this e-mail has sufficiently addressed your concerns and I look
forward to welcoming you to the Neurocam team.

Regards,

Maxwell Knight

This is shaping up to look like it will be really, really cool.
^^^ It is cool. But Mr. Knight sure used a lot of words to say nothing.

Speaking of which, this is an interesting little piece of my communication with Maxwell Knight. I asked him whether Neurocam in any way manipulates its operatives.

He responds:

Maxwell Knight wrote:

Regarding your question about possible operative manipulation – I
apologize, but, due to certain pending patents, I am unable to discuss
this issue at this time.

Mind control, anyone?

art project?

The art project angle has been explained "in game." We are led to believe that the artists were NC operatives that may well have went renegade in an attempt to publicize Neurocam's activities.

Or perhaps it could be better to say that a good bit of decent work has been spent patching the holes in the curtain. Well enough work that we can't be sure it's an ARG at all...

probably not...but guys why did we start to interact with NC. Just think about it...we were all curious by the disclamer. NC isn't this or that. Could it be that NC plans people to come to the site...and without forcing them to do anything...they join NC. Once the operative has gotten too deep in the hole, and he or she can't get out, but trys... he or she gets wacked...killed. So NC is controling our mind without doing anything. They take the saying, Curiousity killed the cat, to the full extent .

I was just looking at the disclaimer on the Neurocam site, and noticed that nowhere in there does it say that Neurocam is not an ARG.
... Of all the things that we have been told that Neurocam is not (ie not a game, not an ARG, not a cult etc),

Has anyone got a copy of what the page was before; has this changed or has this just been misread?

ok well staying in-game, theres no evidence from operatives or neurocam that theres any danger of this, they even say neurocam is not illegal. the only thing is a faked video piece of some one being beaten up (its been stated its not linked to the company)

"Don't regret the things you do, only the things you don't do."

As far as I'm concerned, there's no danger. Besides, wouldn't you always wonder 'what if...?'

We've established that the worst possible consequence would be dismissal from Neurocam.

They seem to have a good safety record, huh Smile
