Book of Star (Soz, also previously posted this to page 14 of "the Cache" but think "Book of Star" needs its own thread... or it will do very soon
Sminky (strikes again!) wrote:-
"all the Latin I assumed to be meaningless turned out to have a purpose after all"
would never have thought "confer" meant "to compare"
and yes, this makes sense - so again well done for spotting this
... the next bit gets boring & repetitive so feel free to skip the rest of this post (... but one of my SPECS may turn out to have some import!)
the repetitive bit:-
Quote:
2/4 to 1/4 April Fool's Day
6/7 to 4/7 Independence Day
8/7 Bazookas link added to both caches
11/8 to 13/8 Friday Thirteenth
13/8 to 14/8 FR link added to BOTH caches
29/8 to 27/8 ?
23/10 to 31/10 Halloween
21/12 Winter solstice
"compare" the "difference"
differences as above (if we don't count spelling discrepancies)
apart from some of dates being significant "satanic calendar" ones - there is also the Bazookas additonal entry AND 13/8 to 14/8 when the friends reunited link was added....
this entry mentions the Book of Star, which in Jon's last entry he says he has obtained and is written in code
think this is the next puzzle for us to solve - to decipher the book
so also think that entry (13/8 or 14/8 is Very Significant
In that entry Jon says:-
"It seems to me that this book is the key " (my italics)
some people have discussed another key earlier on the game - the church key
Rowan72 wrote:-

...the church key are all part of the mythology that is making up this game
the "church key" or the "bottle opener" as us Brits say, is a "link" on the Hiding Room site, but as yet no-one has found a way to do anything with this - but maybe there IS a specific reason why it's there
..... hmm this isn't going anywhere is it?
may have to resort to changing song lyrics again
the whole of entry to 14/8 of the Cache re the BoS:-
Quote:
I have gone back to the Book of Star. Again. It seems to me that
this book is the key. Unfortunately, I don't have an original copy. I
was lucky enough to find the version that I did.
This book is very important. As I just posted on HWAU:
"When first published in the fourteenth century, the Book of Star
offered an unrivalled insight into the man in black.
Unfortunately, as is so often the case with esoteric texts, copies
were made from extremely poor and dubious translations of the
original. This has left the contemporary researcher somewhat
powerless, especially since the original book has been lost for
centuries - and even if found, it's believed to have been written in
code.
Despite this, it is my hope that I will one day find the original, and
then he will be vanquished. Until then, we must make do with
those lesser versions..."
"THIS BOOK IS VERY IMPORTANT"

Jon now has the original version of the Book of Star, as stated in the December entry of the cache.
He received it in exchange for his soul. That's the whole reason he made a deal with S&S in the first place.
He is now hiding somewhere, trying to decode the original Book.
I think the way the game is going to go is that we will have to get enough soul worth in order for us to order the Book of Star, so we too can have a copy and try to decode it.
Just my two cents

Hmm, I thought confer was a common word in English. Anyway, in Portuguese (my mother language) we use a lot of words very similar to Latin, and "conferir" is one of them. Just to make it a bit more clear, "confer" doesnīt always have the same meaning of "compare". For example, I canīt say:
"I confered her to a Da Vinciīs masterwork".
The word is generally used as "compare" when trying to find mistakes, double-checking, and so on.
So, if an employee is checking how many crates of root beer the company has in stock, he is "confering" the quantity. The stweardwess "confers" a list to see if your name is in it.
So, comparing the old cache with the new one is "conferring". We can also go through the flash books and "confer" the spelling errors, handwriting, and so on.
This may not have been very useful, but since we seem to be stuck until 21st, we could always improve our latin.

you can also use confer as in "confer amongst yourselves" - as in consult with each other, talk to each other etc..

could the term "book of star" be related to astrology too?
we knew there were big updates on dec. 21st, ie when we moved to capricorn. we also find the capricorn constellation in the hiding room website. there is a horoscope with hints, and once again the capricorn entry is quite interesting.
i think we will get updates on jan. 20, and i really hope i'm right or this game would get really frustrating

Any other dutch/belgian people willing to storm the stella offices demanding to see Jon released? Now some of you may die while storming the stella offices but that's a risk I'm willing to take
(yeah yeah yeah, I got that joke from shrek...)

Lets march together,
They can't get away with this,
let them know who they are dealing with.
Imagine there faces, if they would hear something like:
Us coming there with signs that say: "He walks among us". Demanding an explenation for the dissappearence of our friend Jon.

Dutch too, and willing to fight... If that does not work out, we can also kidnap one of the employees and ask 1,000,000 cans of beer for ransom. That might just be enough fuel we need to continue playing this game...
Sorry I did not post for the last weeks, just didn't have anything wise to say.
Enjoy this sunny Sunday,

i could disguise myself as the MIB, is there a goat free in belgium, whose hooves i could use?
we should really do such a meeting. would be great fun!
drinking beer coz of jon missing! good way to celebrate.
guess that is what Stella Artois wants us to do.
perhaps we need to drink 1366 beers with 21 ppl on the brewery itself....
count me in!
1366/21= 65 beers per person!
hehe, guess the bill would be 10946 euro's lol.
so, then they release jon, give our 10946 euros, and so we can pay the bill for drinking the beer..;.
or am i drifting now?......

Hey
alcofribas post made me hit on something
I had trouble doing a proper search on it so smack me if this is old
if you compare the dates:
2/4 to 1/4 April Fool's Day
6/7 to 4/7 Independence Day
8/7 Bazookas link added to both caches
11/8 to 13/8 Friday Thirteenth
13/8 to 14/8 FR link added to BOTH caches
29/8 to 27/8 ?
23/10 to 31/10 Halloween
21/12 Winter solstice
and the number of days that change
you get
128212821
that seems like a strangely repetitive number to be pure chance....
however, as with everything else I've no clue where to use it

I had thought about the date differences but I had 12021280 (the actual days difference - I was counting 0 for 8th July and 21st december coz these were new and so no amount of days difference)
... I hadn't put in the 8th July and 21 December dates - so your analysis makes much more sense
hmmm.... have you tried using 128212821 as a password for anything yet?
